President Donald J. Trump

i view it more as ruling class vs. non ruling class, rather than dem vs. repub.  it threatens the political/ruling class of both parties for a trump to win the nomination, never mind the presidency.  this applies beyond the party to political commentators, donors, consultants, operatives, etc... lots of personal interests are threatened here.  limbaugh did an excellent job breaking it down yesterday.  i recommend everyone check out that broadcast.

Do you have a link? I've never listened to him since as a former lib I was indoctrinated that Rush is an agent of satan. But now I'd like to listen. I used to like John Oliver, but now I see him as a media whore/shill who is not to be trusted. I suppose the rest of his ilk like Jon Stewart can be lumped into that category as well. The establishment in all of its incarnations is collectively losing its shit because Trump is doing so well. Now I hear that the little Anonymous pissants are waging war on Trump. Because all of the really important causes and social injustices on this planet have been fought and won. The only social injustice now, it seems to them is the will of the American electorate. How dare Americans like someone and want to vote for him? Anonymous will not have it. No sir. Not today. Not on their watch.

Here's how I think it will go. I think Trump will probably secure the nomination. If he does, the establishment will run an independent candidate in order to sink the election and get Hillary in power. If it's a brokered convention, I think they will try to pull a fast one. They have nothing to lose either way because they've already lost and their best candidate at that point is Hillary. In either scenario, I would expect Ted Cruz's supporters to go for Trump and Cruz himself to endorse Trump in protest of the establishment. I still think he'll do that.

It's because the whole neoconservative establishment are just liberals with proactive heavy-handed foreign policy views that are beholden to do the bidding of their corporate special interests and financial backers. As we'll see when they break for Hillary, the establishment never were Republicans. They were Democrats the whole time.

The Trump brand of Republicanism would be a long-term disaster for the party if he is elected. The establishment understands this and knows that a Democratic victory in November is the lesser of two evils.

It would give the party four more years to get through its identity crisis and come out somewhat unified and ready to compete. That might not work out with a Republican victory in 2020 but it would still be better for the party -- and the country-- than four years of Trump.

IB- Welcome to the dark side-  ;) I've listened to Rush since the 1980s-

I think the 'ruling class' panic over Trump goes beyond just the American election- other countries are facing similar anger and concerns from their populations.

you say that like it's a point of criticism.

To be honest,  I don't know where I stand.  I am critical of some Trump supporters but not all.  To me, he's the next best option to Cruz. If Trump had a record of solid conservatism, I would eagerly cast my support to Trump but I don't trust him just as some on here don't trust Cruz. If Trump has more delegates than Cruz going into the convention, I will most likely support Trump at that time as the alternative is going to blow up the place. Best thing to fix that problem would be a Trump/Cruz ticket and I would enthusiastically support that ticket.  It might also lure some of the #nevertrump people back into the fold. Will such a ticket happen?  I don't know but it is a possibility.

I suspect it will be Christie, and Ted ends up on the SCOTUS. But a Trump/Cruz ticket would work for me.

VoP, you really need to go look at the 1980 race. You (and so many others) are saying some of the exact same things that were being said about Ronald Reagan, just do some work and go read it, I'm not making it up, it was my first election. And it was the third largest landslide in US history. Facts all, my friend, facts all....

Trump could then veer to the left a little to capture more moderates  and centrist Democrats while Cruz can keep the conservatives in line.  I don't think a second  Northeastern Republican is going to help the ticket.  I think it would be better to get someone from another part of the country.

Hell hath no fury like a reformed liberal regretting their previous naiveté. Still, let's not get carried away. We won't know until November what "the will of the American electorate" is. What's happening now is just groups and constituencies lining up for and against this and that, him and her. That's normal for an election year.

What's unusual is the revolutionary fervor of the Trump supporters, which hasn't been much in evidence since Ross Perot. And, of course, the novelty of Trump himself. It will be interesting to see how this group of people reacts if their leader is rejected by the electorate and must go back to making neckties and wine labels.

Naturally, it will happen as a result of some evil plot and there will be plenty of people to blame for the failed revolution. So where does all this anger go? How does it express itself?

You know what they say about Republicans - A Republican is a Democrat that got mugged.  ;)

Actually, I'm neither a Republican or a Democrat as both parties have worked to further their own interests at the expense the country and it's citizens. Elected officials are supposed to be public servants, yet they act like kings and queens.

The fact that some people are saying similar things does not mean that Trump and Reagan are in any way equivalent or that 1980 is 2016. It's just deja vu that you are feeling. The two elections are very different.

Trump will kill America. He's a one trick pony who has no concept of 'other people' unless they tell him what he wants to hear. He's pretty brutal when it comes him wanting his own way (see Scottish golf courses). I doubt he could even find compromise in the dictionary. And as POTUS he's sure going to find he needs lots of it.

It's hard to say. I think you're right in that Cruz would hold the conservatives while Trump could veer more to the center for the independents. But on the other hand Christie may be able to take New Jersey, which could dramatically alter the electoral college map in a way normally closed for the Republicans, especially with the possibility that Trump could take Michigan if he plays his cards right. I'm not sure which strategy Trump will pursue.

You should be worried about the Hidebeast and the other career politicians who have made pacts with the devil. They will destroy this country and anything or anyone who stands in their way. Trump may be an assclown in many respects, but he at least cares about his country and remembers a time when we could be proud to be American.

Ah, kings and queens. That's the kind of revolutionary spirit I approve of, although today it's more of a corporate oligarchy than a royal court. The one unchanging thing about the ruling class is insatiable greed, which causes big problems for the rest of society. We can all tolerate a little greed but not when it gets out of control.

It's incredibly ironic that so many people think that the "greed is good" candidate will be the person to clean up the greed -- and the corruption that feeds it.

He doesn't. He cares (only) about Donald Trump. If he can further that vehicle by any means he will. Tell the crowd he's a patriot (although he got out of the pesky military service shit and decried Mc Cain for getting captured!) and he's halfway there..The locals love a patriot, even if it's disingenuous bullshit when his lips move.

Christie could take New Jersey? You have no idea what Christie's status is with Jersey-ites these days. He was already in the doghouse before he became Trump's lapdog. Presumably, he's angling for an appointed job in the Trump administration because his career in NJ politics is over.

OK- which political pundits do you think are legitimate and express valid POVs? I may be slow, because it takes more than two shows for me to form an opinion unless they are overtly offensive. Since you've decided that Rush is a loud mouthed bigot, does that mean nothing he says has any validity? What evidence do you see that he cares about his country? He says he does but that is worth exactly zilch.

What I see is a guy who cares about himself first and foremost. All his "greatest" decisions and past efforts have been expressly for his personal benefit. Sure, he's hired people. You can't run a company without people, though if he could, you can be sure he would.

Plus, he's got the gall to demean a war hero like John McCain who actually made painful sacrifices for his brothers-in-arms and his country. McCain and many others have proven that they care about their country. All Trump has proven is that he cares way more about lesser things than the good of the country.

Hey MV,

Please implement the IP Filter for the Politics thread.  I am tired of foreigners thinking they have First Amendment rights. It's our constitution, not theirs. Please switch them to "Read it and Weep" mode.

Expats can request an exemption, but only if they provide the appropriate repatriation proposal.

If you have the time, please create an "Other Worldly Politics" Topic and let them play in their own sandbox. Of course, once they get to fighting over there, we will probably be asked to come to their assistance. Resist the urge of foreign entanglements though. Don't moderate over there unless you get firm assurances that you get their oil.

I nominate FightTheFuture as the BellGab Ambassador and charges' de affairs to the Other Worldly Politics contingent. Extensive data analysis has been performed, and he does, in fact, know it all.  If, after fervent prayer with Carly Fiorina and Ted Cruz, he refuses to serve, the alternate nominee would be Jackstar. Based on keyword analytics, Jackstar appears to have the most interest in World Trade and desires to be considered as the Center of attention.

Respectfully submitted for your prompt compliance to my request. TigerLily appears to be in the kitchen preparing refreshments as we speak. Carry on.

Praise MV!

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.
But there is another Mrs McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator’s presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain’s three eldest children.
And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain’s first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.
She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam’s infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.
But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

I didn't put McCain on any pedestal. I only gave him as an example of someone who could truly say  and prove that he cared about his country, in contrast to Trump. His personal life is another matter altogether.

Anyway, regardless of this or your opinions of other candidates, the question remains: What evidence do you see that Trump cares about his country first and foremost, as he claims?
