About the only person I have any time for is Alan Watts, who was tangentially a part of all that stuff.

A local radio station streams his old recordings at 8am Sunday Pacific Time. No idea what time that is where you are.

I recall Vidal reminiscing about an evening with Kerouac in the book.  I think there was some controversy about who fucked whom. Vidal being very much the fucker rather than fuckee, and taking pride in not deliberately giving pleasure to anyone.

The whole counter-cultural stuff is more or less of a closed book to me. I have never read any Burroughs or Ginsberg, though I suppose I should eventually. About the only person I have any time for is Alan Watts, who was tangentially a part of all that stuff.

Burroughs is much the same as Kerouac, basically Kerouac with more shock value. Ginsberg I didn't care for at all, if I'm going to read poetry it needs to be at least 100 years old.

Yes, but he did it in a very Edwardian, Buckleyish way, didn't he? It went something like, 'listen to me, you queer, call me a crypto-Nazi again and I'll sock you in your goddam face'. I remember he threatened to take Chomsky outside too, but he was joking on that occasion (I think, although god knows with that dude).

Talking of Vidal reminds me I picked up a copy of his memoirs the other day and found, when I got home, that they had been signed by the author. They are patchy but worth a read. My favourite part is when he went to a party without his glasses and went to sit down on 'a small ottoman', only to find out it was Truman Capote.

Schopenhauer said something about (not that I am claiming any familiarity with his work) that when we buy books we think we are somehow absorbing them without taking the trouble to read them. There are any number of books that I should read or re-read but never get around to, and it is just one of those Sisyphean tasks that you have to accept you will never surmount.

Yeah, I'll never get through the whole list. Though you know I've found that I actually read faster these days using an e-reader. I was loathe to stop buying physical books, but relented and was surprised to find that I get through more books than I used to.

I have gone the other way and am back to paper again after a love affair with my Kindle for a couple of years. They do love to entice you to waste money on the new version every year or so. I was going to get the PaperWhite with the screen you can read in the dark, when someone told me, 'why don't you just turn the fucking light on instead?'. Which was fair comment. I find the e-reader experience a bit antiseptic, but I will probably change my mind again in a few months.

I switched from a basic kindle to an Ipad with a kindle app. I like lighted screens because I tend to fall asleep reading and can simply close the cover and lay it down and snooze without having to reach to the light. It is antiseptic in comparison to a regular book and nowhere near as romantic, but in my case is very convenient because I can also store and view my own manuscripts without having to carry around my laptop everywhere.

Yes, I have that problem too, my handwriting is a complete abomination but I can type well. I do have problems with advancing pages, it can be a pain, but most of what I read I do linearly. It's also super fast, buy the book at Amazon and it's only your kindle moments later. Plus the amount of public domain books available for it is stunning.

Born and raised in NYC and my dad took me to cricket matches in Astoria park when I was a little girl. Now there are plenty of pop up cricket matches in the local elementary school sports field, which reminds me to always carry a thermos of Pimms Cup, just in case.
