Can you re- re- retire before coming out of retirement?

Sardondi

It's just so wrong to say, "told ya". Especially when one really didn't, other than to say we should remain doubtful. For 15 years Art has demonstrated he is as changeable and uncertain about what he wants to do with himself as the next person. Not a thing wrong with that. But I've found as a general principle, when you feel a stampede going on around you, better hold back, because conventional wisdom doesn't have a very good win-loss record...as I was reminded this past November. People tend to prognosticate with their hearts.

This is rather like pretirement.

THE MORAL OFFICER - PROPAGANDA MINISTER RESIGNS!
I have never seen a man as fickle as Art Bell, one moment doing something, then totally turning around and doing something else. I have been warned about Art's attitude issues, and I did not believe. NOW I BELIEVE! Well time for yours truly to crawl into the hole dug by the "Master Fron The Desert Of The Sea". To get his fanbase totally on the edge of their seats, then to jerk their chairs out from under them? I said when I first began writing at Coast Gab that I did not like the Art Bell of the 1980's KDWN Political Talk Era, he was a jerk then. BUT I thought change had come to his heart in a serious way by the 1990's. I was wrong! I feel no need to engage in contrition, as I was duped by a Master. As Jimmy Durante would say, Goodnight Mrs. Calabash! I am proud though of the positive moral I brought to this stream of thought of nearly 200 pages called "Art Bell Quits Coast"! Take care all! AND be safe out there!

I'm a bit surprised that some people seem so angry with Art. He never promised anything and in fact warned everyone not to read into things. In addition, he still hasn't ruled out coming back at some point, so what did he do that was wrong?

I hold no hard feelings toward him and would still be thrilled if he ever decides to return to radio. I believe he gave a good, honest reason for changing his mind; one that proves he won't do a show unless he can do it right in every way. Yes, I'm disappointed but that's for selfish reasons: Art's return would have been a radio treat for me and I was hoping it would get Snorge off the air quicker.

Just sayin'.

It is perfectly natural for a bunch of crazed loons like us who wish for a guy who hasn't been full time on the radio for a decade, and not on the radio at all for over two years, to act liked crazed loons when same guy hints at coming  back.  I mean, come on...give us our crazed lunacy.

I think the safe and sensible thing for all you fellow Art Bell loyalists is to not get your hopes up and jump the gun. We should know full well by now the on-and-off-again idiosyncrasies that is Art's career on radio and that asking or expecting anything permanent or certain is never guaranteed. I hate to be a nay-sayer, but I think I'll just wait and see what my ears tell me and then I'll be thrilled with overwhelming joy at his return or bummed with overwhelming disappointment about his Brett Farve complacency to retire without even returning. Ah the perpetual pendulum.  :-\

Well I guess we can all relate to the folks who gathered on that mountain in France awaiting the end of the world or whatever was to happen on December 21, 2012.  At least we had some fun and it was great to see everyone pulling in the same direction.  I feel a bit like a follower of Marshall Applewhite from the Hale-Bopp days.

Everyone please deposit your trash in the dumpsters on the way down the mountain.  Thank you all for the great turnout and have a good day!

LOL!  Here ya go.  Some Kool Aid and its is NOT tumeric flavored.

The thought of having to listen to C2C with the Nooron and no Art Bell comeback makes me want to order a tall cold one and drown my sorrows.

Coz

I'm crushed. Art... you tease!!

Poor Kool-Aid. Still blamed after 35 years for something they had no role in.

It was Flavor Aid. Which is the Hydrox to Kool Aid's Oreo.

Very sad news. But I thought that it might have  been too good to be true. Art has changed hismind often in the past. Maybe he did not get the offer he had hoped he would. Being away for so long can do that. I hope Art might have something else in the future. Too bad.

Holy shit!  Give the guy a break.
He did exactly what he said he would.  He worked on something that had to be just right.
Well, it wasn't just right.  Why would anyone want him back "half-assed"?

I assume MV has an open invitation to have Mr. Bell "guest" on his podcast.  Hey, he got Rollye, didn't he?
Never say never.

Wow - a lot of heat directed at Art.  At least he is trying to entertain us again and not disappearing into the night.

jazmunda

I don't think anyone begrudges Art his decision. It's his life and his choice and he owes us nothing.

I take umbrage with his decision to go public perhaps knowing full well that his disciples are known to jump the gun and hang on every cryptic message that he utters.

In hindsight I find it difficult to marry up his statements over the past few days. His initial statement made it appear as if negotiations were quite progressed. You would think that being that far along you would be clear in what your motivations are particularly if you are making public your intentions before signing on the dotted line. Who does that kind of thing. In business you never talk about these things until they are a done deal. Unless, that is, you have an ulterior motive for going public which in this case is either revenge or to try and force PremRad into finally pulling SIT. That's why I am starting to believe that there may never have been a serious offer on the table and it may have been a ploy that backfired. Sure Art probably has thought about getting back in the ring but whether there was ever a serious offer from a big or little player that would have put him a position to retake the throne we may never know. His final statement about his motivation being about revenge and therefore not the right time just doesn't sit right with his first statement IMHO (i've been using the internet for 18 years and have never written that acronym). Were we being used in order for Art to make a public statement/shot across the bow to PremRad?

Anyway, what would a discussion about Art be without some type of wacky conspiracy theory. I could be totally wrong and in fact I hope I am reading too much into it.

As I said it's Art life and his choice and I would never want him to do a show half assed. I love the guy. He has provided me with countless hours/days/weeks/months/years of entertainment and will continue to do so through my 150.1 days long collection (when played continuously).

A horrendous acronym that is always unnecessary.  It is assumed that what you have written is your honest opinion.  Go another 18 years and never look back.  Leave these abominations to the teenagers.  Vigilance.

But.... but.... any half-assed show by Art would still run circles around a whole assed (assed whole?)  show by Snorge.

I',m sorry but all you people finding ways to defend Art on this are letting him off the hook way to easily.
What Art did was irresponsible. He should be flogged for it.
Its not about art "owing anything to anybody".
Art wasn't pressured into coming back. We didn't ask to have our hopes raised up.  HE initiated this, not us.

You don't tell tell a group of starving people, "Hey I Might have found you food and water, i just have to go get it!" then turn around and tell them "Opps my bad, it was just a mirage"
If your not sure you should keep your mouth shut! (Or in this case, get off the keyboard)

The use of words "might, maybe, stay tuned....blah blah blah" are meaningless. He has always used those terms as an escape route.
Fine, a deal wasn't worked out (What deal? I doubt there was one) but to blame ones motivation?
Revenge? Bahaha....After all these years it never occurred to him that revenge was leading his decisions?
Unbelievable.

Its also possible, this was never Art in the first place. Maybe.

I know, hence the "maybe" at the end.
It would be preferable if it was a Hoax. It would make more sense.
Long Live George Noory!
blah.

onan

I am disappointed that Art has pulled back. I am annoyed that noory gets yet another pass.

Art did good radio. My world isn't shaken because he isn't back at the microphone. What his motivations were for delivering a message here can be speculated on; but to what end I have no clue. And really don't care to.

I hope greatly that Art returns and soon. But I doubt it... really doubt it.

FROM FORT ROCK:
Thank you all for understanding the motivation of my resignation! Also, perhaps we all were reminded that Art has serious personality issues, which despite our hoping, cannot be surmounted. If you read "The Art Of Talk", one soon comes to the realization that Art is a Child Abuse Survivor, and has such, a fractured, insecure, personality, which affects all phases of his life. We are now left with the hopelessness of George Noory, BUT this has cleared the way for another personality to step into the breech with the Abdication of the Master. GEORGE KNAPP ARE YOU READING OR LISTENING TO OUR PLIGHT? After all it was George Knapp who was THE advisor behind the scenes of Art over the years! Is any radio production company reading this out there in corporate-land? George might not be able to compete time-slot wise, but we'd accept a show that ran from say 7:00PM to 10:00PM PDT! What do you all think?

Premiere probably paid Art 10M to go away and fade away into the sunset.  ;D

Fort Rock - You are one messed up dude for bringing up Art's past. It is none of your fucking business.

I wish Art all the best no matter what he does.

Art is a scarce quantity (or at least perceived as such), so we've fixated on him too much, in my opinion.  If Coast had a competent host, then we probably wouldn't talk much about Art at all anymore.

I can see an alternate history where a forum such as this would be focused on talking about guests and topics, rather than scrutinizing hosts ad infinitum.
