does coast own the rights to the opening song?
will Art have to use a new song?

That's a good question and one that I've thought about. Leaving aside the fact that Art might want to go in a different direction, or that if he DID use it Premiere might try to make the case that he's causing "confusion in the marketplace", I think that any recorded music is up for grabs to any broadcaster as long as they pay the appropriate licensing and use fees. Thus I'm pretty sure the bumper music, at the very least, will be similar to what Art used to use. And I'm positive we'll hear Crystal Gayle's "Midnight in the Desert" again, since none of the other C2C hosts use it.

Personally I'd recommend he use "Mystic Rhythms" by Rush...that might not be a bad show title, either. "Mystic Rhythms with Art Bell". Hey Art, ya' readin' this? :)

I would be perfectly happy if Art picked up Dreamland or a similar type show on the week-end again. The format of the show fits his lifestyle and would make sense.

"If you've ever sat in a darkened cockpit, in front of a twinkling control panel, and prepared for a night flight, you know the feel of what all-night radio can be like--the excitement of knowing that you'll be flying high and covering great distances while others are asleep. On "Coast to Coast AM" Art Bell is at the controls, guiding his millions of national listeners through the night's news, and bringing them in for a safe landing by dawn. That's Art Bell, and that's the Art Bell show. His fans know the feeling very well."http://www.coasttocoastam.com/pages/art-bell

That`s such a spot-on analogy!

Art always insisted his show would never have worked if it were done during daylight hours.
How true!

OMG........reading your post takes me back to those awesome nights......

thats what is really bad about it all - all of Art's original creations are all now owned by PremRat.
Including apparently all his unique bumper music, opening and closing theme songs, that Noory still uses.
And Art's special holiday creations for Halloween and New Year's Eve...

I suspect Art would still be able to use his old Bumper music. Premiere doesn't own them, those songs would be owned by whoever recorded them/the record company etc.

Plus, I don't think Noory uses much of Art's old tunes these days anyway. I'd be surprised if 25% of Noory's music is from the Art era. Most of the classic bumper music has now been replaced with Lame predictable songs.

The opening song is also in the public domain although I doubt Art would use it... Too synonymous with c2c.

I've read the signs, and the signs say: noory is Finnish(ed)

sorry.

Art won me over in the 90's when he booted a guest off his show after a caller said the guest didn't know anything and proved the guest wrong. I cannot imagine George doing that.

HAH! Jorch would probably say something like "well, we present you with the information and you make up your minds for yourself" and just keep on with the q-cards.

I would be ecstatic if Art would resurrect his old site to go along with his new show. It doesn't have to be all flash and dash. Something Art can update and control himself. However I could see him opening up a new FB first because it's a much faster and easier way for fans to get in contact or spread the word.

Radio's Hero Of The Weird, Art Bell, Announces (Maybe) His New Show

Also... http://www.artbell.com/ is no longer a dead site. You get no information back from the server, but it's no longer bringing up an ad page like it did before.

Glad to see that Ken Layne has lost neither his writing ability nor his cynicism.

"Public Domain" isn't quite the correct terminology, since that implies no one owns it legally. I don't know all the legalese ins and outs, but my understanding is that radio can play anything as long as the station, syndicator, broadcaster does so legally--pays the proper publishing fees, royalties, etc. Most broadcast entities have a blanket deal with the record and publishing companies that enables them to pretty much broadcast what they like.

It might be that Coast and Premiere have a specific arrangement with the owners of the "Midnight Express" theme, such as Rush has with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders to use "My City Was Gone" (which almost didn't happen since they are on opposite sides of the political fence--and the Pretenders only agreed when Limbaugh consented to making substantial donations to animal-related charities). On the other hand, a band, its management or record label CAN request/demand a broadcaster CEASE using their music, as happened with multiple artists, including the BAND Rush, when Limbaugh got into the Sandra Fluke muddle a year ago.

In short, barring some behind the scenes exclusivity arrangement, I think Art COULD use that theme--it's just a question of if he would WANT to, and how much flack Premiere would give him over it.

If anyone out there has a more detailed or specific knowledge of how broadcast and publishing rights work, of course, please feel free to correct my admittedly limited understanding.

Speaking of the music on Art's show, everyone remember this?
Las Ketchup - Asereje Spanish Version

Art used to wonder out loud if Las Ketchup might be the new ABBA. Not quite, but it's hard not to git up and daynce when ye hear this song. ;-)

This business that Art is too old to do a five day a week (or more) show is BS. If he doesn't do it full time for at least the first year or so it will never work. Nobody would sink money into that. It's going to take both time and money to get his audience large again. We should all actually be happy he is doing a new program instead of just a return to C2C because this way, he HAS TO do it full time and put a ton of effort into it. It's the only way to recapture what was once his. Doing it part time would be a waste of everyone's time.

coaster

It is bs. Bell is only a few years older than Noory, and Bell has been in radio his whole life. I'm pretty sure he would have no problem doing it full time, hes used to it. Its not that hard to sit in a chair. My father is 70, works full time doing actual hard work, and loves it.

It's too much trying to navigate through all the postings on this site, I don't live in the US so, I am not as up on things as most of you. I received an Email telling me that Art may be coming back... Oh! god make it so. I would have gone out of my mind if it hadn't been for MV's stream, I can't imagine listening to Snoory night after night, (George Knapp is OK). It would be interesting to see how many stations drop C2C if Art comes back. I for one will be on the first shuttle, I may be even flying the dam thing. Hop on board guy's your in for a smooth ride.

HO

SHIT!
Mine is trying to bring it up, but has been spinning the last five minutes. Has Art picked up the red phone line and gotten on the horn with Rowland?
HOLY SHIT!

Edited to add: Heh, Noory....you're fucked

This was posted by someone on the "Quits" thread, but it absolutely bears repeating here. Thanks to the OP--this is one of the most brilliant and succinct summations of Art Bell's history and appeal as well as the current state of C2C and radio in general. (Not THE General.)

What many fail to realize is that the show is just the end part of a long process. In his hey dey Art had Ramona to do quite a but of his leg work, finding quests,  research, handling advertisers, etc.  Art did a lot of the technical side himself.  If Art takes on the amount of work he used to in the 90's he would be very busy with a full week show. So, I guess it depends on how much he is willing to let others do.

Snoory on the other hand, doesn't even bother to read the book...

I've been keeping an eye on artbell.com too.

As of this post though Artbell.com does not resolve to an IP, so even though he does still own it, it is not tied to anything yet.

Now that I think of it... I gonna write a script to text me the moment there is a dns entry....

When did you notice it was no longer a dead site YNOT?

Does the Noron still use East and West of the Rockies and the First Time and Wild Card lines?

Will Art use them in his new show even if Snory still uses it?

Actually, I was replying to the post below... I have YET to see it resolving to an ip address.. Which means that as far as the internet is concerned, Artbell.com is not pointing to any webserver.  If it does though I'll take that as a sure sign the deal is going well for Art...

Had to get this in before work, lest I be thinking about it all day. Myself, count me out due to my fears of Premiere ninja men stalking me from my bushes, but has anyone sent that douchebag Noory a fastblast giving him shit about the recent status of Art Bell?
Not that I would ever expect Noory to reply to such a thing. Nor am I going to start listening to that no-talent assclown to hear him discuss it. You know he is hiding inside himself like a bitch don't you guys? I know he is. I hope that fucker is having nightmares of Art beating him with a weighted sock dressed like a clown whilst he lay in bed. I'd even be ok with Art or his cats urinating on Noory as well. Litterbox crop circle, for you, bitch  ;D .
We can only hope that the mere mention of Art returning to set things right ought to be enough to scare the living Hell out of any PremRat minion. Especially Noory and his ponyboy Dongweiser. The man knows a real life witch for crying out loud.
Yep, this is going to be fun to watch  ;D
CoastGabbers...good to correspond with you all again and good to see new people. This is going to be the Super Bowl of talk radio. Get the nachos ready, have a good weekend  :)

I can't wait to hear:

'From the high desert, in the grrreat American Southwest, I bid you all good evening or good morning, as the case may be.  Welcome to ...  This is... and I'm Art Bell.'

lulz, can you imagine Jorch haveing stuff like that on his site.
The web sure was different back in the 90's. It's kinda weird listening to the stream, and thinking " I was just a little kid when this happened"

Rare pic from that site:

No, Noory has his own lines and phone numbers the network provided when Noory took over the show.
Art Bell had different dedicated phone lines he could still use on his own since they are not the same.

Im also getting this one though..
69.16.143.110 which is owned by bellsouth.net ??? This one times out on http..... so maybe this is the one others are getting and the  DNS Servers haven't finished probagating it yet??
