I wonder that, too, because AB logged on to Coastgab.com last night for the first time since October.

The cynic in me says this is what it all boils down to. As good a communicator as he was during his career, his antics over the last decade toward his fans are shitty.
I don't think so.  He can do what he wants, and I don't feel like he 'owes' us a show.  He's an entertainer, and when he chooses to work, I listen.  If he chooses not to, I don't feel slighted in the least.  He can retire and return as many times as he wants.  I don't feel like it's being 'shitty' to his fans.

HE OWES US NOTHING.
But I've definitely learned not to expect anything from him.

One thing about broadcasting, it's not like he'd be out doing manual labor - I think he could do shows for years to come.  He does/did have that back problem that makes it difficult to sit too long though.
I do believe Art has a back problem which causes him considerable pain at times.  But, I was always skeptical about him using that as a reason for cancelling shows, because almost every time he did that he'd show up on the ham bands where he would chat into the wee hours of the morn' with his buddies.

I think there was a lot going on behind the scenes regarding his dissatisfaction and conflicts with PremRat that explains more about his frequent retirements and "calling in sick" episodes than he's been able to say.

I'm cautiously optimistic that his open celebration of being a free agent means he may re-emerge on the airwaves in some fashion.  Either that, or that he's writing a tell-all book.   While I'd appreciate the latter, I'm sure hoping for the former.

McPhallus

Sorry I wasn't clearer.  I don't think he owes anyone any kind of return, ever.  People forget that he's already returned several times in the last decade.  By "antics," I meant his seemingly deliberate ambiguous/misleading communications.  He would be better off just not communicating at all, or even disappearing off the map, rather than continually feeding his sycophants.  But that's his decision, I guess.

I understand.  And I agree to a certain extent.  He has been toying with us a little.  I'm trying to reserve judgement, however, in hopes that his future actions will help explain his past ambiguity. But I don't want to get my hopes up, as much as I'd love to see Art 'hoist the black flag' one more time.

C'mon Art.  Hoist the Black Flag.

I wouldn't be surprised by a new book either! He's had a LOT of free time. I love the speculation and I have no shame.

Art, you're showing as online right now. A few words would be great if you have time!

I agree with everything you say, including the fact Art hasn't covered himself with glory with how he's played coy about possible future broadcasting.

But. There is still that part of me (probably the 7-year-old part of me that likes to see things blow and burn) that would love to see Art do a one-night-only head-to-head show. George made a big deal out of his 10-year show, so call Art's the "Lapse of the Non-Compete Clause Show". He'd wouldn't have to do more than the one show to make the point of how sick of George Noory people are.

Neil

Oh Art Bell, you do have me hopeful!  You and Bruce Williams are my two favorite radio hosts, and he's been doing a one hour podcast for a number of months now, after being in retirement for awhile.  Even if you went to a one hour format, it would still beat the hell out of the four hours of mediocrity (at best), we get now!

Either way, hope you and the family are doing well!

coaster

Sure Art doesnt owe us anything, but shouldnt he decide what hes going to do? He knows hes stringing his fans along. when you stay "stay tuned" you know exactly what youre doing. Hes getting peoples hopes up. I wish Art returned to radio, I loved listening to him, but shit gets old after awhile. I for one am tired of watching him sit on his hands. if you want to get back on the radio, do it. You're fans have been waiting Art. Me included. But jesus h, figure it out already. also, im drunk. fuck it. whatever nonsense I just rambled needed to be said I figure.
edit-george noory sucks a dong.

Pull the strings and watch the puppets dance, eh, Art?

Anyone still getting his hopes up at this point is just Charlie Brown thinking Lucy's going to let him kick the football this time.

Art says, "Jump!" and they say, "How high?"

Been a while since I've really commented (though I do read regularly, and have a half-finished response to something from two months ago about show archives I might get around to posting at some point...)

Anyway, though, Art's latest comment seems to have brought everyone else out of the woodwork, so here I am too...

I'll just reiterate what I've said all along...I was one of the most fervant wishers of Art's "stay tuned" teases being a lead-up to something substantial, especially since I was one of the few he contacted directly to help him debunk the fake pages and establish that his Facebook page IS his Facebook page--I'm surprised there's still people doubting/debating that. (And no, I didn't and don't have an inside track because of that, it was just nice to help the man out and be acknowledged for it.) I also kept the "events of 2010 and beyond" section of his Wiki page updated until about a year, when life intervened...

Anyway my fanatical conviction that Art *must* have something up his sleeve with his constant "stay tuned" messages has faded into the background, but--just like rumours/hopes of a new iteration of TWIN PEAKS--has never died away completely. I'm an optimist by nature; it's what I am.

So this latest comment does make me hopeful. But I'm not pinning that hope on anything specific. I doubt he'd do a podcast. And indeed it could just be about his being able to "spill the beans" or some other more obscure goal or ability. But I will cling to the words "free agent" in hopes that he would not have used them if he did not mean to imply he's going to do SOMEthing broadcast-related. Remember in the past he has said "I may pick up the mic again someday". So here's hoping.

The real guessing game is if and when Noory will stop closing each show with Art's name...and if he would definitely stop in the event that Art WERE to begin broadcasting elsewhere. It'd be nice if he took Knapp and Ian with him. I wouldn't mind Simone either, though I think he has a sense of obligation to Noory. (Too bad, since I like Simone.)

Anyway though...once again, here's hoping that there's SOME kind of New Art Bell Something in 2013.

And a belated happy new year to all!

After hearing the interview with Les Stroud (where Art's name came up) and Dennis McKenna, I think it would be interesting to see Art on the Joe Rogan Experience. Show is usually a 2.5 to 3 hr format, and could go in several directions.  For those who just think Joe Rogan is a jackass comedian that hosts bullshit like Fear Factor, he's actually a pretty smart guy that's interested in a lot of deep topics.

I am a fan of Rogan's. And a member of his board. Hes brilliant actually. A very open minded person. When did he interview Les Stroud though? A big fan of Stroud's too. i missed that. That would be something to listen too.

Joe Rogan Experiece 286. It's on YouTube.

I heard Bob Crane doing an ad for his CC radios last night on Savage.  I thought at the time that "free agent" might mean that Art is available to do voiceovers.  It would be a hoot to hear him doing the CCrane spots on Coast.

Is Ross Mitchell doing the voice overs on Savage (KSFO)?  Sure sounds like him.

I've heard him, too.  Savage is now on Cumulus, as is Mitchell.  If I were Cumulus, I'd have Ross doing the show voice overs for everyone.

Quote from: Sardondi on January 08, 2013, 09:25:19 PMIf this is legit it could bode great sport. The problem is there have been more than a few hoaxes in the past that have fooled a lot of folks, and this sounds almost too good to be true. Can anyone say with authority this is a legit cap of AB's genuine page?

Yes I am FB friends with Art and he is on my newsfeed.  Unless somone hacked the page it is from his FB page.

Art Bell should have a twitter page instead of facebook.
Twitter is better for his short messages to fans like "stay tuned" ;)

I don't have a twitter account but I believe Ian and George Knapp tweet often - has anyone seen an acknowledgement of Art's message from either gent?
