I don't know how teachers do it. From piss poor parents to abysmal asshole administrators, and boorish banal board members... I would be in jail for assault.

But the failure always seems to be teachers who aren't held accountable. What a fuckin joke.

Fixing the problem is easy... but fucktwats can't seem to understand any cure in education will take more than 4 years to see a change, more like 10 to 15 years. We have the answers and the plan to fix education just not the will, discipline or trust from know nothing idiots that want little johnny to stop being just like his parent/s.

So every 4 years we get some variation on no child left behind. Another fuckin joke.

So what is Art Bell doing these days?

         Amen, Onan.

Art should go into teaching...as dismal at it can be, it's a brighter future than radio!

I think Art wants to replace "Art Bell: Somewhere in Time" with "George Noory: Somewhere in Time".  It would be on the air once every other Sunday in Kathmandu via a 5 watt AM station.

We're "infamous" via the busing crisis(which began the summer before my near middle aged ass was born) and have had writers from across the country here over the years, because we are a failed experiment ...
my dad is a retired school teacher/administrator and I've had to listen to him rant about busing on many occasions. according to him Dayton, OH was once a paradise with an outstanding school system. now it's a perfect example of urban decay. and I believe it. FORCED busing was an expensive experiment that decimated our urban centers.

what I don't understand is why they couldn't adjust or eliminate the program once it became obvious the harm it was doing. unless the school bus lobby had everyone under their thumb.

Shouldn't it be something more like, "George Noory: Lost in Space?"

Private schools/Catholic schools benefited...financially at least, because anybody who could afford it sent their kids there. My parents COULDN'T afford...but still sent me to Catholic School. There everybody had books, our sports programs were funded etc...but I got booted out and ended up in public. In Catholic, we got fined 3 bucks a day if we didn't shave and had Saturday school for being late to class. In Public, you could smoke dope in the gym in front of teachers and they really couldn't do much, you could walk out the front door after first period and nobody stopped you. A different world entirely.

Oh, c'mon Eddie. Things can't possibly be that bad in the Boston schools. In 2010:

Boston School District budget - $817 million

Massachusetts Department of Education budget - $5.76 billion

US Department of Education budget - $69.9 billion

All that government money must have made the Boston Schools a shining example to the world. Tell us another one.

<yes, sarcasm>

You mean it isn't like that TV show, "Boston Public"?  Aw hell.

Where I'm usually assigned, it's Good Times x The Wire x Cooley High x Fort Apache, The Bronx...though, Boston Public was based upon the TWO good public schools in Boston(Boston Latin, Latin Academy)

And where that money goes...well, our board members don't like that question. They'll roll the window up on their Lexus and drive away.

Fixing the problem is easy...

Do you really think so? See, I think it would take a massive cultural and political change hardly conceivable in a democratic society. In some areas it would take firing upwards of 75% of the administrators and educators, which means breaking the teachers unions; hiring of people who know their subject, not theories of learning (my wife is a teacher, and the cynicism inherent in how we produce and certify teachers depressed her even as a student more than 30 years ago, because even then it was obvious to everyone that the new teachers being churned out didn't know a damn thing about any particular subject).

I would think there would have to be a huge attitudinal change in society, so that school administrators and teachers, once put in place without the interference of teachers unions, would have authority to make sweeping changes and instill a return to accountability, including parents. Parents would have to forgo the immediate resort to litigation which we have a culture have learned. (40 years ago a teachers word was law, and no one would dream of doubting it when the school said little Johnny had been a nasty little shit. Of course, we didn't have nearly the amount of substandard and even criminal teachers either.)

Perhaps more than anything we ought to quit pretending that busing was anything but a disaster. By any measurable standards black students from 50 years ago, who according to our race warriors should have been completely illiterate because they were often taught in less well-funded and completely segregated schools, were far better educated than today; whether in basic literacy or mathematics and science. Busing went a long way to destroying our primary and secondary education system - we now produce a staggering number of functional illiterates, who are actual illiterates in science and math.

I just don't see any of this ever improving in our urban areas outside of a total societal collapse rivaling Rome's circa 400 CE, after which almost certainly would follow a second Dark Ages of indeterminate length. Only then, if America could somehow rebuild, would it be possible to begin a public education system that might work.

Eddie C, sorry if I'm stepping on toes about the teacher's union stuff, but I just think we don't have the political or cultural will to make the huge changes which need to be made.

Not meaning to slight Art on his thread, but I have an idea for better teacher in the cities.  These could be "specialists."  I am sure that you are aware of the massive student loan debt.  One of the way to have the debt excused would be to commit to teaching the subject that you graduated or studied in at these schools, if it would apply to the cirriculum.  For example, a math major would teach math, and an english graduate could teach english classes.  For the half years that you would teach, x amount of Federal student loan debt would be excused.  The teacher would get the teacher's salary, but it would put new blood into the teaching system.  Also, they might feel more committed to the teaching function.  There could be an online boot camp for teachers or some conference they would attend to get some skills they might not have learned in their college courses.  Again, for doing this, x amount of student loan debt would be extinguished.

We need to be creative with our solutions.  There is a wealth of resources in this nation to solve our domestic probems.  We just don't try new approaches.  I just thought of this as I read Sardoni's post.  The problem is that in some situations small minds do not think.  I don't mean that as an insult to anyone.  I only mean that people are just so insecure and guard their turf, that they are not open to new ideas and let them crystalize.  It is such a shame.  That is all for now.

I'm waiting for Art to take action against Clear Channel for Somewhere in Time.

As I've said on countless occasions this would be disastrous for all the Art Bell Classic Show collectors. SIT is the only source of new classic shows. The majority of the SIT episodes are not in any of the torrent sites and it would be a shame if Art shut it down. I understand and respect his reasons but I must say that if it does go then our chances of recovering these gems will disappear forever.

Surely Art recognizes the market value of his personal library. He's always seemed ready to turn a tidy profit. Of course, unless he goes to the trouble of inserting anti-piracy software, somebody would make his shows available for free dl about the time he'd sold the 7th set. So maybe he'll never let 'em go. But I'd bet there is a enough of a niche market for Art Bell media, particularly for pre-93 shows, that if he weren't already set for life, selling his library would do it.

Look at the shitstorm Howard Stern went through trying to get the rights to his old broadcasts.

You're probably right about that, whether or not some broadcast company actually has a colorable claim to an ownership interest. Because, unfortunately in America today, truth has nothing to do with it; and if it's worth the lawyers' time, a legal claim for sharing the proceeds would almost certainly be filed by someone.

But it seems to me Art did as well as anyone ever has at minimizing the number of those who answer "I will!" when he, like the Little Red Hen, asked, "Who will help me eat the bread?"  ;)

MV/Liberace!

if art didn't want premiere to have the rights to his show, he shouldn't have sold them the rights to his show.

Good point. Which brings up another: what exactly did he sell them? No pre-93 shows have ever been heard, IIRC. In fact, I don't recall hearing too many shows from before 1998 or so, but that might be my ears and/or a purely programming decision.

Juan

It's possible that no one ever recorded the earlier shows - didn't see any value in them.

I am sure it was a purely programminng decision.  For sakes, with Y2K looming on the immediate time horizon and inevitable doom, why would you want to waste your cassette taping  a show on the versacorder?

Not so sure.  When it comes to coughing up actual cash, 7 might be about the size of the market for old radio shows no matter who it is...  It would sure be a shame to lose them forever though

Whats Art up to these days?

george noory: I just talked to him,.,as a matter of fact he called me twice on a matter we are working on. He's retired...though I tried to bend his arm to come do a few shows with me...he didn't say no lol
As shocking as it might seem, I doubt Noory is lying about this.  He surely knows about Art's Facebook page, and how easy it would be for Art to deny this conversation took place - hell, fuck Facebook, Art would have any number of ways of calling George out on this, including posting here.  Despite everyone's fervent desire to think that Art has a hate on for George, he hasn't really spoken out against him - and it would be ever so easy for him to do so.  Seems pretty obvious his beef is with Premiere, the producers, etc., but not the hosts.

A caller during the final half hour last night asked George how Art Bell was, the response was that he spoke to Art Bell for a brief time about his daughter going into kindergarten. No mentiOn on air of the 'unrelated issue'

If there was some sort of "non-compete" clause in Art's "retirement" wouldn't it have included a "talk nice to noory" clause as well?

You got it.  I imagine his conversation with them was quick:

Art: I want you stop airing my old shows.

PRN:  No sweat, Art.  We noticed you cashed our check, though.  We're gonna need that money back.

Art: Oh. (Click)

Art no doubt realizes he doesn't need to make Noory look bad.  Noory handles that quite well all by himself.

Art's response tonight to a Facebook question:
Why dont you start a podcast, Art?

Art Bell: It's not that I want to do a show, it is that Coast has gone so far down the drain that I wish my name was not associated with it. I asked them to stop the Saturday Broadcasts of my old shows but so far they refuse.

If Art isn't talking about Geroge Noory specifically here, then what else would it be that sent the show down the drain?

Art owes his lawyer/agent a kick in the nuts if he did sign something like that.

I heard that too.  And even as big a liar as Noory is, it did ring true.  He sounded very pleased to reiterate that he had talked to Art recently and that Art was happy and that his little daughter was starting kindergarten.  Sounded just like what would have been said in a pleasant exchange between two "peers."

Could Noory have been rumbling defamation of character after Art's recent statement of shame?  Sounds just like the way the Noory we all know and love would think.  If so, it sure made Art jump through the required hoop.
