You know, I do remember a circumstance where MV himself defended her before she took over in a manner that surprised me, as it came out of nowhere, lacking any public context.  Inferring some behind-the-scenes angst as its source, may we not, without resorting to any suggestion of a familial or improper relationship between Art and Heather, at least say that she is capable of displaying her insecurities in a way that provokes a paternalistic protection from men?  She probably thinks she owes her job to this, so continues to mine that vein as a matter of survival.

Apologies to everyone who figured this out months ago.  As I get older I realize how truly naïf I am in the ways of the world.

It really makes me wonder how much Art coached Heather after she took over.  He seemed willing enough to exploit prank calls for their entertainment value.

Your story of the phone call is sad.  How a genuinely fun chick from the Gabcast can turn into an insecure wet blanket overnight is a mystery.  I guess I know people at work who are probably the greatest moms and dads to their kids but turn into little Napoleons when they think their livelihoods are at stake.

It's just ego, I think.

So if this was a book we'd be the guy she seduced to get close to the boss, now left feeling used and dirty and embarrassed.  That sure would explain the abrupt change in tone once she took over, which kind of mystified me at the time.  I thought giving her a while to show whatever promise Art saw in her was a reasonable lowering of expectations, but then I started reading halfway through the book, and I don't know who Diana Rigg is.

Just got off the phone with my cop buddy and he's pretty pissed. Most departments nationwide are now implementing something called the "Wade method"  Apparently you wait until 4 or 5 officers arrive, attack en masse like berzerkers(not knowing if the guy's armed or not), subdue him(assuming you're not dead) and then ask him "Diz(sic) you have a gun?"

Imagining that she adopted the same persona with Art that she displayed here isn't too much of a conjecture.  I don't recall hearing anything from her that exceeded the kind of gentle flirtation you see at work from a certain type of woman who indicates, by various means, that she is comfortable with that kind of attention.  Painting her as a femme fatale is probably a stretch.

That is not to dismiss the idea of seduction -- mostly that happens between our ears.

I have a half-Asian cousin who's amassed a comparably bizarre, though completely different, set of identity tags.  I think it's a real phenomenon, though any notion of "reality" kind of goes out the window at that point.

I don't know, man. I just can't imagine getting too enticed by an avatar off Google, some cutsie-poo words on a page or a suitably feminine voice on a podcast. I mean, really, there's no chance of making it with a Diana Rigg avatar.

Of course, I got here after the witch left, so I leave open the possibility that she could have cast a spell on me too. Except that she's a bargain-basement, phony witch.
