For background:  when it comes to AM news/talk format, my market has a Clear Channel owned blow torch and a locally-owned independent station.   We don't have a Cumulus station, but the local station has always carried some Cumulus content, as well as Hannity (which they lost to Clear Channel recently).  My thinking was that IF Art's announcement is that he's returning to broadcast radio, and IF Cumulus is the syndicator, the locally-owned station would have been approaced by Cumulus about carrying it, and might be lead into spilling some beans.

Here's the email I sent to their VP/GM:

Hello.  I’m sorry to see that the local Clear Channel affiliate has taken Sean Hannity from you and given you the Dave Ramsey show in his time slot.  As a listener, I’d prefer to support your local station rather than Clear Channel.

My main question to you, since your station carries some Cumulus content such as Mark Levin, will you be picking up the new Cumulus-syndicated  Art Bell show?   If so, do you have any information as to what time slot it will occupy?

At this point we look to keep Mark Levin on and I will check out the Art Bell return.  He was gone for awhile and I think Dave Noorie replaced him.

We were Sad to have Sean leave but that is sometimes what happens to small broadcasters vs the Big Guys of Clear Channel when they own all these shows they syndicate.

Make of that what you will.   To me, it doesn't seem like the guy's being disingenuous that he's heard nothing from Cumulus regarding the possibility of syndicating an Art Bell show.   Still, his reference to Dave Noorie made my day.

Perhaps not on the show.  I can imagine Noory slightly nicking himself while shaving early in the morning with thoughts of Art's return thumping sharply through his brain like a runaway train...

he stops for a second...feels a slight twinge of pain...and as a little droplet of blood begins to roll down his chin his eyes widen in the mirror, and, as he drops the shaver... a scream that would make Sasquatch proud emanates from his mouth...

he begins to run through his house, overturning tables, knocking over his TV, dumps the fridge over and breaks the picture window leading to his balcony.  He stumbles out to the balcony, naked, his face half-covered with blood-mixed shaving cream, and with eyes as wild as Hoagland's imagination Noory screams into the early morning darkness. 

As he begins to catch his breath he notices a little kid on the sidewalk directly below.  The kid asks, "Are you George Noory?"  George nods yes, weakly.  Then, the kid, with the confidence of a general leading troops into battle confidently proclaims, "Dave, you suck."

Ed Dames was at the time, a riveting interview every time he was on. Yes I agree, in hindsight, we know he was full of shit, but at the time it was pure ear candy when he was on.
I would absolutely (even knowing what I know now) still love to hear a Dames interview with Art again. Its about entertainment folks, I feel that Dames brings that when he is interviewed by Art.
Lets face it, most of Arts guests were full of it except for the guys like Kaku. I mean, Mels hole??? A classic, but nonsense.

I for one hope Dames is one of his first few guests.

I must admit, he had my attention the first couple of times I heard him. I was still very naive then, and he did scare me. But after that, he just annoyed me. I'm not sure I could stomach more of him. But then again, Art could work his magic and make it fresh again.

My problem with dames wasn't his story. Rather his pompous pretentious attitude always made me want to smack him.

Art had plenty of guests that were obviously self deluded. But many if not most asked to be believed rather than lord over the audience.

Hopefully this is the real thing, and the show will be called "Dark Matter". If this is true, C2C will die a much quicker death, and we can all look forward to good guests with an excellent host who knows how to interview. Hopefully Knapp will jump the sinking ship, and join Art to do some guest hosting and a few Sundays.

Hey everyone, my first post here.

I stopped listening to coast around 2005 and would make exceptions when Art was on or if Ian had a cool guest. Now, I am back and cannot wait to listen to Art's new show.

About the question of Art's producer and how the Sirius set up will in my guess work.
A little background, I started listening to Art when I was 14 and Art lead me to work in radio and I ended up producing three local shows before I went back to college.

Anyways, many of you forget that while Art did start out booking his own guests and had a huge amount of control over his show etc. He still had a MASSIVE group of people working directly for him in Oregon, and when he let George take over, they fired almost every single one of those people.

My guess is that Sirius has rolled out the red carpet for Art and that in return Art isn't asking for a huge salary for himself but bringing back people who worked for him in the past. Evidence numero uno being that Keith Rowland is already back and working full time for Art and not Sirius.

SO, just a guess, but I can almost guarantee Art had stipulations that Sirius would pay for a few producers and the like and he has probably brought others back on from Oregon.
Art said he wanted certain terms to be met and its obvious that Sirius did this. They are BUILDING an entirely new home studio (NOT cheap), Keith is back and building a new website, and he most definitely has at least one producer.

The amount of money Sirius can make from new subscribers is HUGE compared to the cost of having Art back, which is probably far less than you think.

I personally would LOVE the opportunity to work on Art's team as I am sure many of you would.

Predicting the Future of “Dark Matter”  
What will Art Bell’s new show be like?

One of Art’s favorite show topics was “Predictions”.  With that in mind I’m going to make some predictions as to what we can expect from “Dark Matter”.    No, I won’t be using Remote Viewing to see inside Art’s new state of the art studio; instead I’ll look at history to speculate on what the present incarnation of Art’s show will be like.   As someone once said, “What’s past is prologue”.

When Art made the transition from political talk to the paranormal in the early ‘90’s he cited his frustration and boredom with the same old left /right battle and the futility of trying to make sense of politics.  The result of that boredom launched Art into unexplored radio territory. 

Just as Gene Roddenberry found story telling in traditional TV shows of the early 1960’s too restrictive, thus creating “Star Trek” and “the thousand worlds concept” to give him greater creative freedom, Art used “Dreamland” and “Coast to Coast" to break out of the traditional talk show straight jacket and journey to “other worlds”.  UFO’s, alien abductions, near death experiences, mass consciousness experiments, time travel, ancient civilizations and a myriad of other paranormal and fringe science topics were the starships Art used to take us “on a ride”.

When Art went part-time on “Coast to Coast” in 2003 there was a subtle shift in the program.  Yes, there was still a healthy dose of paranormal topics, but as the years went by, particularly by the late 2000’s, the shows were more likely to be on topics related to weird weather and climate change, the consequences of a looming energy crisis, the nature of conciseness and cutting edge speculative physics.

These later shows were still fringe in some respects but they were more “grounded” than shows from the earlier period.  The guests all had at least one foot planted squarely on terra firma.

So what about “Dark Matter”?   Here are my predictions:

•   We won’t see a return to the show of the mid to late ‘90’s.
•   Things will be closer to what was done in the mid to late 2000’s, but with more vitality now that Art has creative control again.
•   There’ll be fringe topics, but guests won’t be able to strain incredulity as much as in the past.
•   Art will feature new discoveries and advances in science and technology with his characteristic zest. 
•   Now that he’s back four nights a week he’ll again have the ability to attract celebrity guests  from the entertainment industry.
•   Art will recap the news of the day, hand picked from what he finds interesting and unusual.
•   The show will be “edgy” by virtue of returning to unscreened callers.
•   There will be more Open’s Lines, particularly once Art get’s “back in his groove”.
•   Art will do breaking news events again.  Examples being his adept coverage of 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina.   

Twenty years ago Art was bored with his conventional talk show and that led to the creation of completely new radio genre.   I don’t think we have to worry about him keeping “Dark Matter” fresh and interesting.  Art won’t be bored; it’s not in his nature. And lucky for us that means we’re in for a one helluva ride!

So what do you think?  Care to make any predictions of your own? 

Once “Dark Matter” has been on for a few months we can revisit this thread and award “ding, ding, dings!” for the hits and “bonks!” for the misses.

I dont think the show will be as science based as people seem to think. All of the press releases stress PARANORMAL. It's going to be like the mid 90's all over again imo.
