uh, yeah.... that interview with phone hacker "Captain Crunch" = pretty horrendous, unless you enjoy two absolute techno nerds getting wet in the undies over how to screw with phone lines --toward no discernible end-- using '70s technology.
And yet I sat here with it playing for a while before I remembered that I had options: reminded me of the mid/late '90s when I'd have Art on radio while doing something really constructive (playing DOS-based PC games) late at night.   Today I was playing a Windows-based game while the show was on.     Things change!

But here's another difference between then and NoorCoast today.   Though that show might not have been my "cup of tea," Art was really obviously (geekily) into it.   He was having fun, so more power to him.
Most times, when Noory is being equally unlistenable, he doesn't sound like he's having fun.   Whatever the topic --even his supposed pet topics like alternative medicine or stuff suggested by the figurines on an older female relative's bric-a-brac shelf-- he sounds like he's undergoing --or possibly, lazily, attempting to perform-- surgery.
Noory, you hate what you're doing, it's abundantly clear.   We hate you for doing it.    Do us all a favor and just fu**ing quit, okay??

I like hearing the early 90s shows where Art nerds out about computers and the internet. I really think he was ahead of his time as far as developing a web presence for his show goes.

There was a show on a month ago where Art had bought Windows 95 on opening day and was afraid to install it.
Art had a Windows 95 caller line and people that had just purchased the software called in about it.

yep, i remember in the 90s before the internet became popular when Art first had a live video camera that made a small compressed video window via a direct dial-up modem connection. he promoted it as using some new kind of Intel technology.
he let people dial up to the number and you would get a couple minutes you could watch Art live during the broadcast and could even type a quick message to him and he could reply with text.

if you tried to dial up a second time right away, you would get cut off since he wanted others to get a chance too.
i got in on that once and that night Art talked about cutting his finger so I typed a message to show his cut finger and he held it up to the camera then.

Art was way ahead of the time before internet webcams... 
He also pre-internet had his own modem-based bulletin board system (BBS) where you could download image files related to some of his guests, like a photo of Max the crystal skull.

WebTV had severe limitations, obviously.  At the time, though, it wasn't too bad.  Most web sites were still in their infancy and not affected by WebTV's limitations.  The limitations were mostly audio and video related, and most sites didn't have audio or video back then.  I was able to chat with my husband while he was stationed in Korea using the old TalkCity site.  I could listen to C2C both live and archived.  I was able to keep up with the various news sites.  So, for what I needed at the time, it was fine.  As the web sites grew more complex, it became obvious that WebTV was not going to keep up with technology, so we dumped it.  But I actually have great memories of my WebTV.

Good question.  I'm trying to remember.  If I recall, WebTV sold both the hardware and the access.  I think the access was about $12 a month, but I don't remember.

I think WebTV started going downhill once Microsoft bought it.  Updates would get pushed back, promised audio codecs would be cancelled, etc.

maybe, but maybe not.  microsoft has always been pretty inept when it comes to anything other than office and windows... and literally half the time, they can't even get windows right.  they're not a particularly impressive company.  never have been.

I have really learned a lot about Art Bell, since being saturated every nigt in the stream.


He is an amazing interviewer, and listener.

He has an extremely broad base of knowledge.

He is humble, for a major radio personality.

He is indignant, whne it comes to 9/11 being an inside job.

I really hope that he has changed his tune on the last one, or is he another 9/11 "go with government conspiracy theory" zombie?
