    Good point, and I reminder of how much I miss 1997.

   

Watergate changed American history, changed our politics, changed journalism, changed legal ethics, on and on.

Now we get a -gate because some guy with capped teeth let air out of footballs.

       Capped teeth and hair plugs.

       Ask 100 people at random today why Watergate was called that and I'm guessing 75 say "it means scandal" instead of hotel.

       

My brother was in the national guard at the time. He went down in the clean up afterwards...pure horror with all the bodies in the jungle...half eaten by wildlife, rotting...he says it still haunts him today...

       The aftermath probably gives an indication of how horrific things were even before November 18. Leo Ryan initially saw the Potemkin side of Jonestown, by day's end he saw the reality and the rest is history.

Certain members of the San Francisco political establishment absolutely awed by Jim Jones.  None of that mattered though for Willie Brown who went on to be the long time speaker of the California House of Reps, and Mayor of SF, nor did it hurt Art Agnos who also went on the be Mayor

Oh yes, our political representatives are just so smart, and experts in everything.  It's unfortunate they didn't all go on the trip with Ryan

     His tentacles were all over Bay Area politics. In September '72, Les Kinsolving wrote an expose of Jones for The Examiner and caught hell from SF/Oakland elites for it. All of the aforementioned were in bed with him(Carters and Mondale, I give a slight pass to, but the Cali pols bear full responsibility) Moscone used Brown as his Temple middleman. Moscone appointed Jones to SF Housing Authority in Oct, 1976. The Guyana plan was afoot by late '73, because CIA(another dud who turned on them)- plant Burnham was leading a "socialistic" English speaking country that wouldn't give Jones trouble. Exodus begins in summer '77.

      Other Jones pals...Angela Davis, Huey Newton, NOI, AIM,SLA, Jane Fonda/Tom Hayden, Harvey Milk and Carlton Goodlett.

Just to take the counter-position on the flu shot thing.  I used to get horrible flus that would knock me out for two weeks at a time.  I'd have such high fevers I'd get almost delerious after a few days.  Sometimes I'd lose like 5-10 pounds during these ordeals. (that's alot for a squirrel)

About ten years ago I said "F" it and tried the shot.  Not only did I not get the flu that year, I haven't gotten it for the last ten years.  I've had a few near misses but they're glancing blows rather than the full frontal assaults I used to get.  Still have all kinds of other health probs but at least that's one misery I've been spared for some time.

I'm annoyed that Amazon didn't consolidate my purchase payments from a single order.  I made two purchased thinking it was going to be a single payment, but the purchases came from separate vendors through Amazon.  My bank account was debited twice, so now I have to pay bank fees for the second transaction. 

Furthermore, Paypal made another withdrawal from my account in order to confirm that account, so I have to pay an additional bank fee for that transaction.

Furthermore, even though I made my purchases today, on October 31st, they registered as November 2nd which means I will have to wait until December to make another purchase or withdrawal if I want to avoid further bank transaction fees.

Reminds me of an old joke.  The speaker at the relationship seminar asks the audience how many people only have sex once a year.  A handful of people glumly raise their hands.  But one of them, a very old man in the back row, jumps up smiling, waving his hands wildly.  The speaker asks him "But sir, what are you so happy about then?"  The old man shouts back "Today's the day!!!"
