Just a thought. If the fortune cookies served in China said "wear a condom" would that ease the population growth?

Turns out the Chi-Coms are relaxing their 1 child per family, and allowing 2 starting early next year

I'm tired of thirty somethings being the goto people for information, both in news and entertainment. I work with many thirty year olds, and although they have some very good basic skills, they are not the goto people... ever.

Grouchy old man.  You don't even realize how stupid you became on your 40th birthday.

Haha, yes, and I'm sure in most cases, like a school project, only one person really does the work!

You undoubtedly become stupider after 40 in pure cognitive power, but hopefully wiser and more knowledgeable.  Actually, I think I made wiser decisions at 20 so maybe that's not quite right either.  Um, you have fewer hormones to misdirect you after 40 which makes 40 > 20.  Yeah, that's it.

Yep we may have fewer brain cells after 40, but the ones we have aren't marinated in hormones, allowing clearer thinking to finally emerge.

Although true, it hardly explains cognition as one gets older. Although total neuronal mass decreases there is a great deal of speculation that actual neuronal volume may shrink but the number of synapses may increase to negate the overall decrease.

Where we see a great deal of cognitive change is in some types of memory. Episodic memory definitely takes a hit. People past their 40's (generally speaking) are much less likely to report step by step events that happened last Monday than a 25 year old. However semantic memory increases from middle age into the elderly years. But at later years that memory also declines.

Also, younger brains (even into the thirties) are still learning. Whereas brains of those in their 40's show much more symmetrical activity. What does that mean? Well it is tough to say, actually. But one thought is that the brain has more than one strategy to stay vital and viable.

Having said all that, there is no escaping age. The older we get, well, the story isn't a pretty one. Many processes start to decline, dopamine and serotonin levels decrease, calcium regulation declines, glucose metabolism in the brain is less effective, vascular degeneration, and the possible onset of some dementia... frikken sign me up.

So we don't remember what we just did, but we can speak much more eloquently about it.   ;)  I kid ... but actually pretty interesting post onan, thanks for the info.  (I better write it down, though.)

Except Bay Ridge 'cos it has the best Welsh pub east of Manhattan, and not one fedora, man bun or beard in sight.

I don't have it quite so bad but the whole daylight savings on and off on two continents has changed my listening habits.

When the show started you guys were on daylight time and the show aired between 2pm and 5pm for me.

At the beginning of October I went onto Daylight time and the show aired between 3pm and 6pm for me. I usually leave work between 5 and 6pm so  that was still fine.

Now you guys have come off daylight time and the show now airs between 4pm and 7pm for me. The hours of 6 and 7 are bed and bath time for my kids so I am no chance to be listening live unless I want to scare the shit out of my kids just before bedtime.

I'll have to wait until March or April until things go back to normal for a few months at least.

First world problems indeed.

It would probably be good for the kids to learn about the real world.
