The problem with connect the dots journalism though is that it's unethical. It is invariably a tactic used to back a preconceived notion, in this case Russian influence. This is the same technique people like Alex Jones use, i.e. a preconceived notion that there must be a new world order. That's journalistic pandering to a targeted viewpoint, which is one step away from yellow journalism. You're telling a group of people that you know hold a certain viewpoint what they want to hear. The problem is, that's not journalism. That's weaving a narrative.

Take Chuck Schumer. He directly met with Putin in 2003. That's public knowledge. Now I could take that story, which means absolutely nothing other than some Russian oil company opened a gas station in Schumer's district, and play connect the dots. I could look into Schumer's campaign funding and find Russian connections, or Chinese and Saudi ones as they did with Hillary, because the world is so financially interconnected today that you can find almost anything if you're willing to look for it. Then I could weave a narrative around it through casting aspersion in order to get the eyes of people that don't like Chuck Schumer. I really don't like Chuck Schumer, so I may not consider it unethical to weave that narrative, but what I'd be putting out there was not the truth and that's the bottom line.

That's all this is, and the real tip off is how the net is widening. First it was Trump has Russian connections, then those close to Trump, and it will continue to widen from here on out until the story burns out. In the end, it's just concocting a narrative over things that may or may not have happened Alex Jones style. Give this one a few months and watch what happens.

He only met with the Russian ambassador under the auspices of his Senate duties.  All senators meet with all sorts of foreign dignataries during the course of a work year.  It is part of their job.

On this whole Trump-Russia business, I can't help but think that most of the people who are more likely to believe that there is something to it already dislike Trump with a passion and are just looking for stories to validate their opinions.  They are ready to believe anything that may diminish Trump.  I'll call out Trump when he does something I don't like but this whole Russian business is just silly.

In a separate questionnaire, Sessions more directly denied personally contacting any Russian officials regarding the 2016 election.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., asked: "Several of the President-elect’s nominees or senior advisers have Russian ties. Have you been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day?"
