That I am.  I was split in the '76 election.   The aw-shucks country charm of Carter appealed to me while Ford didn't do much for me.  I had no stake in that race at the time though I would later regret the election of Carter.  Reagan really appealed to me and I've been a Republican ever since.

Still, I listened to the election results  of '76 on my little radio in my bed through the wee morning hours.

I'm not sure who my parents voted for.  Mom liked Carter a whole lot.  Dad was harder to read during that election.  I think he probably voted for Ford but didn't talk much about it.  My parents had been Kennedy Democrats but they went to the right as they got older.  Dad was far right in his last years, ears always glued to Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage.

Ford screwed up in one debate. "the Poles are a totally independent and autonomous people". I still remember cringing at that line. In a nuanced manner, he probably knew what he meant, but they were sure under the boot of the USSR at the time.

Funny how 4-6 years later, Reagan capitalized on the independence seeking Poles and their Solidairty movement to begin his victory over the Cold War.

I've been trending Independent for a while now though I'd vote for a Republican in a heartbeat over a Democrat in most instances.  This election might be the last straw but then again maybe not.  It takes an effort to go out and change my registration and I've got better things to do.  Dad was a registered Democrat until he died though he hadn't voted as a Democrat in a major election since at least the 70's.  In later years, he always pointed out he was a registered Democrat.  He loved the ironic humor of it.

Other times, I think he's a plant of the Clintons to ensure that Hillary will win --- coz he definitely won't win as the Republican nominee, "they all" know, and she'll coast into the White House.  What Trump gets out of this deal, I'm not sure.  Perhaps favors when she's installed as President?

Still other times I think Trump genuinely feels he has what it takes to "make America great again."  If so, I'd love to start hearing more specifics from him on how he plans to do this (other than The Wall he's gonna put up).

I agree with all 3 points. Point number one turns me off deeply.  I used to dismiss the second point but now I am taking it a bit more seriously.  Regarding the 3rd point, yes he needs to elaborate beyond saying it is going to be unbelievable, fantastic et al.

I really have no idea if Trump is a racist but the media and the Democratic party are going to target him as a racist and provide clips like the Tapper interview and they will succeed once more. I think the Dems are worried. I'm sure they'll try to paint Trump with a war on the minorities schtick, but the variables for Trump are completely different than for any other candidate. The Dems have a problem, internally they know that while people will vote for Hillary, few in the party actually like her. They also know that Trump won't follow the rules and will hit Hillary constantly with her past. Trump can't be beat regarding ratings for news stations, so for the first time in my memory the coverage won't be stacked against the Republican candidate, as it was for Romney who damned nearly disappeared for months at one point from the media eye. That said, Trump can also monumentally screw up in ways the might not have been able to do in the primaries.

I was fascinated with politics by the age of 8 and well remember loving Firing Line. William F. Buckley is my Big Bird. That said, I started out as a voter as a libertarian, grew more pragmatic with age and joined the GOP, then during W. I left it and went independent moderate softcore libertarian. I'd still be there, but Ron and Rand Paul sort of enticed me back into the fray of the GOP but I'm far from a social conservative. My support of Trump stems from the fact that I do not believe it is possible for the GOP to win any longer with the layout of the electoral college map. Only a wildcard can defeat Hillary, and the only wildcard up there is Trump.

This is not a biased media clip.  It is simply Trump in his own words.  I agree with you and SFAuthor about the media.  They are terrible.  I posted the Jake Tapper clip earlier because while it may have been a gotcha question, it was one that should have been easily answered and Trump repeatedly sidestepped it. That is his fault not Tapper's.

Definitely not a gotcha question. Candidates get asked the same question all the time when there's a questionable endorsement. Cruz just got asked recently about the endorsement of that controversial midwest preacher. Also, Tapper was not expecting Trump's answer. Who could possibly have expected that? It was a dumb move and Trump is not dumb.

There's no clear explanation, that's for sure. But the bad audio excuse is not flying on Fox. They are doing a good job demonstrating that he did hear the question very well and botched the answer. And that's Fox, mind you.

I have some respect for those folks and the fact is Cruz spent money trying to trick them and then wouldn't apologize for it. The funny thing is, I usually feel like I know:  at least to the degree of a "gut feeling."  In this case, I bounce back and forth equally between the three scenarios depending on what sort of clues I'm gleaning from internet or TV.  I'd prefer to think it's the 3rd theory that's correct:  that he genuinely believes he can make America better.  Even if that's the case, though, he could find his fine ideals well hog-tied by the restrictions of Congress once he gets to the White House -- assuming he does.  I'm expecting he'll lose to Hillary.
