And this little gem is hidden deep inside The Orion Nebula. One of my grand daughters is named Lyra. I took a picture of the Ring Nebula in the Constellation of Lyra, had it framed and it has been hanging over her bed since she was a week old . One of my better deeds.

Serinity, a man of your character, I sure has done many 'better' deeds. Is your Granddaughter named after Lyra the constellation or because the parents liked the name?

Lyra, the Harp
It's easy to find Lyra, the harp, by first finding Vega â€" one of the brightest stars in Earth's night sky. Look for Vega high overhead in mid-summer. Lyra looks like a small, lopsided square, with Vega just beside one of the corners of the square.

You might forget the name of the girl you first kissed. You might forget the name of the last girl you kissed. You will NEVER forget the names of your Training/Drill Instructors.

Lyra is named after the Constellation. I had shown her mother some of my favorites through the eyepiece and she was raised on Anime and my Astronomy habit so she surprised me with this precious gift. Lyra is 7 now and knows how her name came about. I am truly blessed. I have always called her my little nebula.

My TI's did not have first names. I met Tsgt Lovelace and Ssgt Roper at 5:01am on December 6th, 1974. After they turned over my bunk spilling me onto the floor. With the sweet, calming voice of TSgt Lovelace asking me if I was an individual. Actually, it wasn't very calming.

People always ask me why I remember Pearl Harbor day.

And yes I know it is Dec 7th. Because I stayed awake all night so I wouldn't oversleep again. December 7th, 1974 is a day I will not soon forget.

Well I remember Rick due to him telling me I would never get through jump school because I was a wimp and too scrawny. But if I did To come back, slap him then buy him a beer. So with fresh Sgt stripes and a new Green beanie, 2 years later I went back to visit (yes Bob was really my uncle on my mothers side so I went to visit) . Rick and I beat hell out of each other then went and got very drunk.  Last time I saw him, he was a Sgt.Maj. In 5th group and I was in Spec Ops. Good memories

Greetings and Meow!  Weather Cat here.

Windy tonight, snow tomorrow.  Details below.  You don't have to read it if you don't want to. ;)

Special Weather Statement

UNCOMPAHGRE RIVER BASIN (this is my area).

...A SERIES OF STORMS TO AFFECT THE AREA FRIDAY THROUGH NEXT
WEDNESDAY...

A RETURN TO MORE WINTER-LIKE WEATHER STARTS EARLY FRIDAY MORNING
AS A COLD FRONT MOVES INTO NORTHERN PORTIONS OF UTAH AND WESTERN
COLORADO. THIS FRONT WILL BE THE FOCUS FOR INCREASING
PRECIPITATION ON FRIDAY AS IT STALLS OVER NORTHWEST COLORADO
THROUGH MID AFTERNOON.

AREAS FROM NEAR HIGHWAY 40 TO THE ROAN AND TAVAPUTS PLATEAUS HAVE
THE HIGHEST PROBABILITY FOR HEAVIER SNOWFALL RATES. AREAS SOUTH OF
INTERSTATE 70 CAN EXPECT SNOWFALL TO BEGIN LATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON
AND EARLY EVENING AND CONTINUE THROUGH NOON SATURDAY. THE NORTHERN
VALLEYS COULD SEE A FEW INCHES OF SNOW WITH THE COLORADO MOUNTAINS
SEEING ANYWHERE FROM 6 TO 12 INCHES. THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS SHOULD
BE ABOVE 10 THOUSAND FEET ELEVATION. THE MOUNTAIN RANGES ABOVE
CRESTED BUTTE...ASPEN VAIL AND STEAMBOAT SEEM THE MOST LIKELY
AREAS TO SEE THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS WITH THIS LEADING STORM.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE WITH THIS STORM IS INCREASING...BUT THE EXACT
PLACEMENT OF THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL BAND IS STILL SOMEWHAT
UNCERTAIN. BE PREPARED FOR WINTER TRAVEL CONDITIONS OVER THE
MOUNTAIN PASSES LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY AS THIS STORM MOVES
THROUGH. PLEASE MONITOR FORECASTS FOR THE LATEST DETAILS AND
POSSIBLE IMPACTS WITH THIS SYSTEM.

THE NEXT CHANCE FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL AFTER THIS SYSTEM WILL
BE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY WHEN ANOTHER STRONGER COLD
FRONT MOVES THROUGH.

Astronomy Report for Thursday 10 December 2015
=========================================================================================
(Random Geminid meteors this week - Geminid's peak Sunday night (13th-14th) Monday morning - New Moon Friday)
Geminid Viewing Guide

Geminid Meteors on the rise ?

Maximum Zenithal Hourly Rate:
2014 - 253
2013 - 134
2012 - 109
2011 - 198
2010 - 127

As of Thursday morning December 10th, Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR) has picked up a consistent stream of radio pings hailing from the constellation Gemini. The peak will occur Sunday evening into Monday morning. The 2015 Geminids are near optimal, with the Moon a waxing crescent on the key date of Sunday December 14 safely out of the way and 10% illuminated, only three days past New. The Geminids have a projected plateau of activity running from 1:00 UT to 23:00 UT on December 14th, with an expected maximum falling right around 12:00 UT/07:00 AM EST. Interestingly, this peak should favor viewers along western North America in the pre-dawn hours.

Fireball over the Mojave Desert (Southern California)- © Wally Pacholka â€" December 14, 2011.

Tomorrow night is the New Moon. It "reaches its minimum brightness and therefore it is called a new moon.  In astronomical terminology, the phrase new moon is the lunar phase that occurs when the Moon, in its monthly orbital motion around Earth, lies between Earth and the Sun, and is therefore in conjunction with the Sun as seen from Earth. At this time, the dark (unilluminated) portion of the Moon faces almost directly toward Earth, so that the Moon is not visible to the naked eye.

The original meaning of the phrase new moon was the first visible crescent of the Moon, after conjunction with the Sun. This takes place over the western horizon in a brief period between sunset and moonset, and therefore the precise time and even the date of the appearance of the new moon by this definition will be influenced by the geographical location of the observer. The astronomical new moon, sometimes known as the dark moon to avoid confusion, occurs by definition at the moment of conjunction in ecliptic longitude with the Sun, when the Moon is invisible from the Earth. This moment is unique and does not depend on location, and under certain circumstances it is coincident with a solar eclipse."
This text has been taken from www.cute-calendar.com

Moon Phase:  Waning Crescent 1% illuminated and getting smaller. The 28 day old Moon is in ♐ Sagittarius and is passing about ∠7° of ♐ Sagittarius tropical zodiac sector. The next Full Moon is the Cold Moon of December 2015 after 14 days; 25 December 2015 at 11:11.
The Moon is 395 607 km (245 819 mi) away from Earth today. It moves closer for the next 10 days until perigee, when the Earth-Moon distance will reach 368 418 km (228 924 mi). The Moon will hit Perigee (closest to EArth) on the 21st (day of the Solstice. :o )

What, did someone set a target on W Colorado? Build up the fire wood, get plenty of coffee and have your radio ready as well as a good supply of podcasts lol
Now here in SELA it is 73 and breezy. Slight chance of rain but foggy in the morning. With 5 knots or less of wind out of the SW, the fog is likly to hang till late morning. Lows in the mid 60's tonite back to 73 tomorrow. I think someone forgot to tell La that this is winter
