Winter's Darkest Day...

December 8th will be the darkest day of the year with only 8 hours and 56 minutes of visible sun. A bit early you say ? No mistake. For most of us, this afternoon has the earliest sunset of the year if you live around latitude 40 degrees North. Then comes the Winter Solstice on Dec 21 - 10:49 PM CST. Most people celebrate the whole day as the December Solstice. In reality, however, the Solstice occurs at a specific time - when the Sun is exactly overhead of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2015, this will happen on December 22, at 04:48 UTC. For locations that are at least 5 hours behind UTC, this event will occur on December 21. This is because of the Time Zone difference.
The term solstice comes from the Latin word solstitium, meaning 'the Sun stands still'. This is because on the Winter Solstice, the Sun reaches its southern-most position as seen from the Earth before reversing it's coarse and returning North.

In order to top that one, I went on a fruitless search of Northern Exposure episodes, looking for the one I remembered as a night scene suddenly exploding in makeshift lights as Adiemus wells up in the background. I associate it with Christmas, with everything's going to be all right.

If I could find it, it would knock your socks off and raise the bar ... but alas ...
