I may have said this before Serenity, but I spent most of my summers in Ireland when I was a youngster.  My Daddy drove our family past every blade of green grass, and we had a Guinness in as many pubs as we could.

(Moon Jupiter Conjunction this week)

People at 30° north latitude will see the Sun set earlier today than at any other time this year. Tomorrow’s sunset will arrive less than a second later than today’s. The date of earliest sunset depends on latitude â€" the farther north you live, the closer it occurs to the solstice ( December 21st.)







Conjunction between the Moon and Jupiter:

Tonight, (actually Thursday morning,) the Moon and Jupiter will make their closest approach, passing within 1°42' of each other.  From the 45th parallel, the moon and Jupiter will become visible in the morning sky at approximately 00:59 when they rise 7° above your eastern horizon. They will then reach their highest point in the sky at 06:32, 51° above your southern horizon. They will be lost to dawn twilight at around 06:46, 51° above your southern horizon.


At the moment of closest approach, the Moon will be at mag -11.6, and Jupiter at mag -2.0, both in the constellation Leo.

The pair will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.

The precise positions of the Moon and Jupiter at the moment of closest approach will be as follows:

The moon will also be sweeping through the constellation Leo (near Jupiter) for the next several mornings. Although Jupiter rises over the EAstern horizon just after Midnight local time, best viewing times are from 3-4:00 am when the planets (Venus, Mars) have risen and form a straight line climbing into the sky in the EAst - pointing in a (rising) Southerly direction.



This week is a good time to view the moons of Jupiter.

All you need is a set of binoculars.

With a total of 67 known moons â€" including four large moons known as the Galilean satellites â€" Jupiter almost qualifies as a solar system unto itself.

Most of the moons of Jupiter are small, with about 50 of the satellites being less than 6.2 miles in diameter. The number of moons changes fairly frequently, with 66 and 67 being confirmed at the end of 2011. Most of the moons were discovered in the late 1970s and later as a result of several explorations by automated spacecraft, including NASA’s Voyager in 1979 and Galileo in 1995.

The moons of Jupiter have orbital periods ranging from seven hours to almost three Earth years. Some of the orbits are nearly circular, while the moons farthest from Jupiter have more irregular orbits. The outer 33 moons orbit in the opposite direction in which Jupiter spins, which is unusual and indicates the moons were asteroids that were sucked into Jupiter’s orbit after the initial system was formed.

This week is a good one for viewing the planets of our Solar System, so grab a set of binoculars or break out your telescope and enjoy the morning sky.
