The country was booming economically so that always helped. He was PM during 9/11 and the years following and was a staunch Bush supporter. He was actually in the US on a state visit during 9/11. He was the first to commit troops to action in Afghanistan.

Yes, I remember he was here during that and Australia standing with us solidly. That was freaking bad man, and it was nice to see Australia, Canada, Britain, most of Europe stepping up and acting like the western world again after 9/11.
