Well, it may help if those calling in be upfront and use their BellGab ID's so she knows you're asking sincerely. If she treats you like a troll and hangs up, then fuck her shame on her.

She doesn't have to. It's much more revealing to see someone dodging a question than to hear some well-prepared answer. The worst sort of interviewer is the who one plays the interviewee's game and lets them off the hook. If they don't answer the question, then ask it again. Or let the next caller ask it instead.

I think the perfect example of getting your teeth firmly into someone'e trouser seat until they answer the question is this clip here. The interviewee was a slithery little dick, and it came out brilliantly here - Paxo stuck to his guns and didn't back down.

What's amazing to me is that Heather never asked for any of this.  Art asked her to produce, she did a great job. She's obviously a huge fan of Art's and understands the show and Art recognized that.   Art asked her to take over, and I think she's doing a great job, especially considering that she really has no previous broadcast experience except for a few podcasts.  But it's apparent to me in light of recent events and upon listening to the last gabcast that there were a lot of people that she counted as friends who turned out to be pretty damn unfriendly.  It's really a mess.  And it's a mess that Heather didn't ask for, she's just doing what was asked of her.  I'm astounded at people's willingness to jump her shit and say that she's awful and to make unsavory allegations.  Fuck all of this

Observations of some common phrases I've heard that are incorrect:

1) I called up Bateman just to "rattle the cage."
It's rattling someones cage.  Not rattling the cage.

The idiom "rattling his/her cage" is derived from the act of shaking a cage with an animal inside of it. This action angers/startles the occupant of the cage.  Its meaning is "to make someone angry on purpose, often in order to make them seem silly."

"Rattling THE cage" implies that someone is disturbing someone else as well as themselves.  The more appropriate idiom in that case would be "rock the boat".

eg "I called up Bateman on Monday night just to rattle his cage, so sue me."


2) Call the show and we'll get you "on the line" as quick as we can.

When you call in to a radio show, you are already "on the line", then when the host picks up your call and you begin to converse, you are then "on the air".

eg "Hello this is Dr. Ruth, you are on the air."


3)   Hi everybody, "what's the good word on the street"?

This is incorrect as it combines two common phrases to form one incorrect one. It's either "What's the good word?" or "What's the word on the street?"

eg.  "Hey man, what's the good word?"  or "Hey, what's the word on the street?"


A good radio host should be well versed in common phrases and idioms. Improper use really detracts from my listening experience.
