As far as Flo and Eddie go..The LSD and "summer of  love" potion wore off.  They totally don't know the meaning of "free" love anymore.  That's the kindest way I can put in perspective what the Turtles have done lately.

I loved them with frank Zappa back in the day

I can live with post '72 stuff.  I love the 60s stuff Art played but I can listen to that stuff any time.

I have a question for Art. If you have a guest on your show that has a book out, do you read the book or do you prefer to wing it? I ask because I listened to a podcast by someone was a guest on your show once who said that they had to provide a list of possible questions. In the end it turned out that hardly any of the questions were used and it became a more spontaneous kind of conversation.

Interesting to know if its changed. As I recall he once said that he didn't read the books so that he could ask more questions and come on just as the listeners are (not knowing about the book's information.) But that might've changed.

I do remember him saying this. But, I also remember him being really excited about Tess Garritsen's book Gravity, and having her on the show for that reason. Which by the way, I loved when Art had her on the show. <3

I sure none of you follow my posts closely, but as I posted before, my parents are Paranormal du jour, and I'm a play-along skeptic.
When I was a teenager my Parents home was the wacky place for friends and oddies to gather.

A Ouija board for me, was just another way to get girls.
No no, I'm not pushing it, really I'm not. It sez you like me.
Nice, let me read your palm.
Howling with laughter and rotf.

"The music industry is just a mess of greedy, sleazy corporations and individuals."
Actually 99% of all industries are a mess of greedy, sleazy people who work their underlings until they can get new ones for cheaper, and dispose of them when they are no longer needed. They do not benefit the "people" at large, they only increase their overinflated salaries for micromanaging others whilst contributing nothing. A giant sucking sound is the only thing emitted from them. There are a million ways of doing things better to benefit all, but "none of that, it would cut our profits" My $2.00.

It's a mixture, nobody can read them all but I am a avid reader and try my best but no I do not read all my Guests books. I do ask for a list of questions from the Guest but most times just wing it.

I try to make the Guest comfortable, if you can do that you get a much better Interview.

So true. We've organized our whole society around the principal of 'fiduciary responsibility.' Profits Uber Alles. Anything goes as long as it increases share price and personal fortunes. "It's just business bro, don't take it personally." Disgraceful, really. Any Sims player could easily design a better world with the resources we possess.

Well not so new, was 97 but I never heard it until Keith sent me that link today.

Pre-recorded questions on cue cards, and replies like "you've got a point" and "could it be portals". Now thats how you do a show..

We really want to hear these things and all the other music you're listening too. Would be so boss if you could have someone vet new music to play on your show, on occasion. Find some new spooky-appropriate music to share. Your audience would love that segment, guaranteed. Especially if you get good music volunteers to find the stuff. Would be an excellent evolution for the show. I'm sure there's a thread already dedicated to it.

You forgot "could it be Angels"?

Sometimes it  is better if art does not read the book, expecially if it's a new guest. If art reads the book then he will know more than the listner. Hence, Art may completely understand what a guest point is because he read a detailed explanation in the book. Meanwhile, the listner has no freaking clue what they are talking about.

I think it's okay not to read the guests' books so long as you have done some groundwork and have a passing familiarity with the subject matter.  I don't know how that other host can cover the same material year after year and never read up on some background so that he doesn't embarrass himself.  His 'research' seems to consist of asking the same superficial questions again and again during an interview and never hearing the answers, vaguely remembering old scarcely relevant movie clips and blurting them out like a Pavlovian dog, and having Fox News opinion pieces droning on in the background.  Anyway, thankfully you have a genuine interest in the stuff you broadcast, Art.

And don't forget to ask a question that the guest answered/covered just a moment before.  That's a patented "Dave" technique.

Art, I have a question:  Speaking as a person with anxiety struggles, I wonder how you became confident to be able to talk with such a large audience.  When I was younger, I was very cocky and self assured, I wish I still had that strength.  I often think about putting myself in your shoes, what it would be like hosting all the different guests and topics, and I think I'd be in my element, but for my anxiety.  Here on this board I can think out my words and type them thoughtfully, but the challenge of being smart and extemporaneous with a large audience life I don't know if I could do.  Of course, part of overcoming fear is to step right into what scares you, right?  What was it like when you first broadcasted as a young man?  Thank God my wife believes in me, because sometimes I don't believe in myself enough.  When I was a teenager I was a lead guitarist in a few different bands and fed off the audience's energy and love, I'd like to regain that confidence, but do you have any tips on how to do so?

Also, have you been to Cebu yet?  What other islands besides Luzon have you been to?  I miss Cebu and it's people there, such beautiful, sweet people.

Reported. There is already a thread for music suggestions. We will listen to all suggestions. ;) :P

Cebu, yes of course we almost bought a house there.

As to how I do it that is the one question I have no answer for, it is like being in a zone, I don't know how it is I get there but I know when I am in it and it's like I can do no wrong. I understand that does not answer your question but that's as close as I can get.

Of course, I'm not Art, and this isn't exactly an answer to your questions, but relates.

As someone who might be described as an addict of long-show format radio, I've been listening to numerous talk radio hosts for a couple of decades.   Auditory perception is my dominant sense, and this medium of communication is more important to me than any particular genre, as are the very unique skills required to excel in it.

Over many years, I've exchanged correspondence with a number of the "greats".  Something that's interested me quite a bit is that I've yet to encounter a one of them who could be said to excel in written communication.  In fact, perhaps the opposite could be said to be true.  Yet, when they speak extemporaneously, you can hear ever single element of grammar and punctuation used with an unusually formal style and with the precision of a master artist.  It's almost as though they have a weird, kinesthetic understanding of the spoken language.

As well, I've noticed that the ones I particularly admire don't do well with formal speech making, and generally don't do all that well in television interviews.   Wherever their particular talents reside, they seem to be meant to be heard, rather than seen.   :)

That's a great observation! I just want to add one thing I noticed in Art's bellgab comments. He's an accomplished writer, as well.

Art Bell

I can write but not in any accomplished manner. Some things just defy explanation and how I do a talk show is one of them. It is kind of like I go into another place. I really can not explain. I rarely think of the number of people listening, I remember when I would go on a big new station in some big city, that would screw me up for a while as I thought about all those people but then I would move back into my comfort zone of the subject at hand and all those nerves just evaporated. Weird stuff.

Art, you mentioned once that you used to have mild(?) panic attacks before pretty much every show - did that ever go away?

This is a state of mind that a lot of world class athletes will go to in major competitions.  You just get tunnel vision and are completely focused on the task at hand.  The crowd, TV crews and all of that are just blocked out when you enter that zone.  As you said Art, you're acutely aware when you're in that zone and everything you're doing comes so natural.

popple

IMO Art has the touch when it comes to the written word as well. He will say just the right thing at the right time and it packs a punch. Gets us all excited! Pretty darn funny at times too. Especially the unexpected comment about his clean show. I still can't get over that one. I actually feel compelled to frame & hang some of them on a wall or get them embroidered on a pillowcase LOL ;D
