Verizon is getting smart to this set up and it only works with old 3G air cards without extra fees. I have unlimited data 3G plan.
It's a nice set-up for traveling, but I'll probably get rid of it soon and replace it with a 4G large data plan iPad crap.  I Hate Apple :(

You don't have wifi tethering on your phone?   I share the internet connection between my current phone and my old android phones, giving the kids access when we're on the road.   Unlimited data/talk/text on Cricket (AT&T). $40/mo.  Now of course, I'm not using a cricket brand phone to do it.. :)

Art,  what's your reasoning for not doing both internet and terrestrial?   Even though I think  you're right about the future being internet based listening, I still think there is a market for you now on the AM dial.   Why wouldn't you take advantage of that and help out the mom & pop stations like KNYE and give your programming to them for free?  If anything, it's just another way to stick it to Dave, plus it's a good way to shore up your base during the transition from kHz to UHF...

I'll field this for you Art :)

National syndicated programing are  given 'free' to local radio stations. Revenue is generated for local stations by local ad spots.

I would assume that Art wants to run lean and mean, and doesn't want the hassles and staffing to deal with local broadcast radio stations (contracts, selling ad space etc). The internet live streaming infrastructure is already in-place and awaiting a talent like Art to reap it's benefits.

The last major hurtle is overcoming the punitive cost associated with copyright music when coupled with an unknown revenue.
A logical solution is to partner up with a legitimate company that has already figured out a way to crack that nut.

and oh yes, thar can be lot's of gold in thar streams, if you're a big name talent with a loyal base and have what it takes to mine for new listeners and subscribers!

How I'd do Art?

I am ignorant as to how the sausage is made, but if you had a reliable stream, why couldn't they just pick up the stream and rebroadcast it, watching for commercials with the thunder sound?     And then they'd have to make sure they had the appropriate music licenses to cover the rebroadcast's bumper music.

Yes have wifi free tethering.
Air card wifi works like any normal whole house wifi set-up.
Tethering phone limits, to one device and I always need my phone for work calls.

Respectfully Area 51, I'm not a Radio insider, everything I know is from reading Arts post.
Logic is, everything you asked can be answered by very carefully reading Arts old posts on this thread and equal importance, pay special attention to subjects he doesn't reply to.

There is definitely a likelyhood that I missed a post that answered my question and I'm sorry if I was repeating something.  It's hard enough to follow Falkie's thread - god knows I don't come to bellgab for Art talk.

Hey no problem...  It's hard enough for anyone to understand and make much sense of anything amongst the vicious & vaguely lovables

Internet killed the video-star even more.
I don't watch anything on TV anymore, but still use the radio sometimes.
I get news online only, because TV news are too dumb.
I get TV shows and movies online too. I mostly watch things like Game of Thrones, Vikings, Battlestar Galactica, and select movies like The Bourne Identity (all 4 movies are awesome).

Vikings is a great TV show. I love it.

Well, I still have multiple radios because I can plug them into the wall and don't have to worry about recharging them and haven't found an app so far to allow me to listen to short wave which is always fascinating.
I heart radio is replacing regular radio but I still take a small radio toma ball game and carry extra rechargables because you're not always going to be able tofind a plug to recarge your Iphone or other phone and solar chargers tend to cost too much.
I have a plug in radio in each room but listen to radio on my Ipad but the sound is too tiny which is why I still prefer a real radio.

It is my position that Radios have been replaced by smartphones and I intend to prove it.

When you drop these little factoids on us, I see in my minds eye; Dave wandering around the offices at PR ala 'Brick' fm Anchor Man, "Make the scary man stop!"  Leza and Tommy taking turns fouling themselves. PR execs gauging wether or not they can, somehow, pry their windows open to hurl themselves to their death.

Apropos, nothing?

Game Over Man, GAME OVER!

Apologies for butt-hurt caused by this post.

I hear TaintCo has a product for that...

These things have phones in them now?

I need to upgrade.

LOL I have that exact same ghetto blaster.  It is 30 yrs old.   It sits on my deck and gets used when working outside in the yard.

Search for an app called glSDR, that's internet connected shortwave servers, not actual radios but Software Defined Radio which you can Google sometime if you want to understand the technical details.

I'm sure some did.. I did not.

The thing even has a motion detecting alarm on it.  LOL

It has a good radio receiver in it...  AM/FM/ and  2 shortwave.
The brand is Clairtone.

When it comes to TV, I've gone retro.  Dumped the satellite service and went completely over-the-air with a digital antenna.  Since most of today's programming ranks with "Honey Boo Boo," the old shows from the 50's - 70's look great to me.  The supposed entertainment corporations are doing as good of a job screwing up TV as they have radio.  Sure, some of it's a generational thing, but I'm happy and it's not costing me a cent, past the initial miniscule expense for the antenna.

maybe Rush is a good entertainer. I never listened to his show.
the youtube clips I saw were mostly political stuff, and I don't like his analysis and opinions (mostly about the US invasions and their meddling everywhere, I'm with Ron Paul on foreign policy).

Of course you are. Who wouldn't be? Here's a link to it. Make sure you read the header.  :D    Foriegn Policy

I still listen to AM radio.
It comes down to battery life. You can listen for 1000s of hours on an AM radio with a single set of batteries.
You can listen to something for 8 hours on a cell phone.

There's been talk of people wanting an app for the new show. My question is how easy would it be to add the ability to call the show from the app? Simply using internet traffic instead of cell service?

I know there was a Skype line for DM, and if that's the answer it's fine. I'm just one of many who despises Skype. (Not the principle of it, just the execution of it.)

Yup. They even run them in place of John Batchelor on both nights now.

Yeah, why?  That's always frustrated me about WABC.  Any chance Paul Alexander could come back?  Batchelor and Alexander was a great show!

I think I said I would have a live Internet Stream but I don't think I said I would not be on radio stations as well.
