Well I do agree with Howard to a degree, I do not think they are for losers, they are for people who can not listen live. I do agree that a Podcast alone will not bring many.

LIVE shows on the Internet though rare now are the way to go and the future of what was Radio, Mark my words.

I wonder how much even of the current mainstream radio shows are actually being listened to on AM radio vs the free streaming services? Do the ratings separate that or is it only for radio reception?

Most radio stations are available free on internet stream via the Tune-In (or iHeartRadio :o) app on smartphones/tablets, easier and higher quality audio than listening to the same show via the AM radio.
c2cam of course is also played on Sirius/XM so even many car listeners may not be listening to that show via AM anymore?

I don't bother with FM or Sirius/XM music stations, since I just load up lots of mp3 titles on a mini USB flash drive and/or my smartphone's micro-SD card,  to listen in the car or anywhere.

Terrestrial radio has yet to learn that its only marketable commodity is original talk content. Music is everywhere for free already, and the listening experience is much better via those new music sources. By the time they figure this out, it will have long since been too late.

True. Can't remember the last time I turned on a radio to listen to music.

Rogan does great with live but doesn't take calls. Anthony Cumia takes calls but he's not about long form interviews. Both of them use video as a big part of their live stream, which is something I'm not too interested in..

Yeah, unless it's Phil Hendrie, not much interest in watching video of a radio talk show.

Art Bell

All that bandwidth for video? No, if I wanna pick my nose I don't want you watching.

I actually enjoy the SiriusXM music stations.  Great guest artists always pop in to DJ for an hour or two on various channels.  And you have the niche stations like Watercolors, New Age, Latin Jazz etc.  A big cut above FM in my book.  If I want to listen to something in particular I'll load up my flash drive or smart phone.

For news/talk there are plenty of choices for sure.  I usually tune into KNX 1070 in Los Angeles.  To get an international take I'll tune into the national news from Spain (rtve.es) or BBC.

Are you sure? Jazmunda would pay top dollar for an authentic Art Bell Booger w/the accompanying video clip of its extraction.

And if the Skype call could be thrown on screen live, rest assured that would be screenshot and printed to go above the mantle.

And the sad part is there'll be no big movie digging through the forensic evidence about why it went belly up. ::)

The murder will continue unabated with the only people who care eventually dying off as well. I'm 39 and feel a relative neonate when I listen to AM radio.

Art, thanks for hanging with us and sharing your perspective regarding many matters. It is good to have you back again. I have been a fan since 1995 and it was a major loss to me when you retired.

Best of luck to you in your new endeavor.

The end of terrestrial radio is bittersweet for me.
I'm an electrical engineer and love all the new technology,
but I have such a sentimental feeling for the magical way radio captivated the kid in me.
Building your a crystal radio set and messing around with antennas to get a signal...
Somehow baseball or sports shows, like Pete Franklin sounded "right" through an AM transistor radio.

There was nothing like being out in a fall evening using my telescope at night and hearing the intro of Art's show...
Or listening to something creepy through that crackling AM late at night....It's all about the ambiance I guess.

Oh well...Just being nostalgic.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I feel the same way.  I listen to AM talk all the time, but I think how odd it is that someone as young as I listens to these old timey radio shows.  Ha.  At 39.  Hip it ain't.

But no matter what/watt, we will always have WKRP in Cincinnati.

What a great show!

It was great!

Till the day I die, I don't believe I will ever forget the reaction that occurred when Andy walked in and unfurled the KISS poster.  hahahaha  The horror!

I will keep my transistors crossed that you will consider conducting a WKRP in Cincinnati "Reunioncast" interview on MITD.  ;)  It would be a satisfying thing to listen to, the stories they could tell. Mr. Arthur "Big Guy" Carlson (Gordon Jump) would approve from the Great Beyond, I'm sure.

Yeah, my office is alot like Les Nessman's.  He was an early inspiration.

Well then, Red, I will now expect a full report on farms and hogs in a daily private message.  But throw in some news on Spinal Tap and Alice Cooper, please. I still need my fix. Heh.

If you have an android device, I recommend downloading the free Old Time Radio Player app. There are hundreds of classic radio shows.

Your prediction has been recorded, sir ... and it is my contention that one day soon you shall receive a ding, ding, ding and not a bonk.

Art Bell

Just consider, how many people do you see walking around with radios vs smartphones? If people could get a really good program live on their smartphone......

My truck's radio consists of a usb port, SD card drive, and an auxillary port that I can plug my smartphone into.

Even at this point the internet is killing fm and am. With Bluetooth or even just a aux input
Your connected. Most of my kids friends
(teenagers) don't even know what the local stations are.
At this point the only station I listen to  is NPR, and even that I can listen to in tune in when I'm walking the dog or whatever.

Art, you are right on the money.

As my ex-wife was fond of telling me, "I think my grandparents listen to that(any AM) show". And that was circa 2000. My 56 year old uncle is still an avid AM listener, and I shit you not, he listens to Roy Masters. But my siblings, especially the younger ones, NEVER listened to AM at all. They didn't listen to talk radio in any form until a few shows popped up on FM.

Most new cars do but what I'm talking about is the day when you enter your car and your smartphone is synced with the dash board and you have access to all your apps fully integrating your phone and in turn the internet with your car.

I purchased a c-crane radio during your last couple of years on coast.  In recent years  I have only used it as an external speaker for listening to podcasts.  I agree with your position.

Yep my listening habits mentioned in my former post is all done by my smartphone.  SiriusXM and other apps installed makes it all possible.  Good times.

Nick el Ass

I still listen to an actual radio a lot, and even buy cd's... but spend a good amount of time listening to shows on the trusty pc.
