Art Bell

I think the experience with baseball announcers is one reason why we all want Art around so much.  We have lost so many great voices in the past few years (Joe Nuxhall-Reds), (Ernie Johnson & Skip Caray - Braves), (Ron Santo & Harry Caray - Cubs), (Jack Buck - Cardinals), (Ernie Harwell - Tigers), (Phil Rizzuto - Yankees), (Ralph Kiner - Mets), (Richie Ashburn & Harry Kalas - Phillies), (Herb Score - Indians).  We will always associate great and fun memories with those voices that we listened to over our radios on warm summer evenings and afternoons.

I think that is what I miss so much about Art.  The good times and trying times that I endured in the 90s and early 2000s will always be associated with the thrill I enjoyed each night as I listened to the master unroll another gem of fascination.  Hopefully there are still future memories left to be made with Art.

I have fond memories of listening to Marty and Joe call Reds games.

Joe Nuxall was the man.  He was only 15 when he made his big league debut.

For whatever reason, I  just never really warmed up to Marty.

I sort of have a soft spot for Charlie Steiner from his days announcing fights with ESPN... my late father was an amateur boxer and a big boxing fan. I can recall a lot of evenings in my younger years watching the fights with my pop.  I can recall when a young Mike Tyson showed a lot of raw potential!

We have much in common there. I have been a boxing fan all my life. I even tried boxing as a kid, through a YMCA program, but I was far too gangly, so I stuck with basketball and track.

I always loved watching boxing on ABC's Wide World of Sports. Then came USA Networks Tuesday night at the fights, with Sean O'Grady and Al Albert.

One of the greatest night of my life was spent in Cleveland Ohio watching from the cheap seats, Muhammad Ali  fight the Bayonne Bleeder, Chuck Wepner. I was, and still remain, the most die-hard Ali  fan that ever walked the planet.

He ain't comin' back lol.

Really. He's not.

I think he will come back for a very brief time (4-5 weeks) and then things will gradually fizzle out until it is no more.

I think he will do a couple days and ultimently fade to black will do the rest of the week.

I believe in Art.

SIT this Saturday (March 15) has Art and Graham Hancock from 1996. This is going to be some classic Art Bell.
I may even drive out into the desert with a lawn chair, some good whiskey, and a couple books from the library about the pyramids, then fire up SIT and enjoy the sunset.

Graham Hancock: "I think your show is a great forum for discussing ideas..."

What happened to us?

Top of the 3rd hour of the show: Art just reported the story of a choking cat hitting the speed dial on a phone for 911. The operator heard the sounds of a cat choking and screaming and sent help to save the cat.

Another tidbit: Hundreds of sharks near Mali gathered together to turn over a boat and eat the fisherman.

A caller mentioned Coral Castle and Art had never heard of it (July 1996).

As a teenager, Art took apart and refurbished a pinball machine.

The first SIT I've listened to since DM cratered.  An 18 year old show.  Art sounds so good.  What happened to us, indeed.  :-[ GNS.

The jorch creature happened.

I was going to sign up for streamlink just to be able to listen to SIT, as I really can only use on demand stuff. Anyway, it doesn't work with mobile, nooks, kindles, etc.

Lame, not getting that.

So is anybody else finally easing back in to listening to old Art shows?  Taken me a while but I just listened to my first full show since November, the Officer X show posted elsewhere on the board

I listened to Art last night.  He was excellent, as always, especially when the 9-11 Truther called in and blamed 9-11 on the government.  Art ripped her a new one and told her he doesn't buy a bit of it.

Refreshing - especially considering how Doofus George stands behind Alex Jones and all his "blame the US government" for Oklahoma City, 9-11, Sandy Hook, Boston Marathon, The Hostess Bankruptcy, bedbugs, jock itch, diaper rash . . . . .

You can bet Art wouldn't have said,  in a discussion of the Malaysian airliner, "you can't rule out the supernatural.  Maybe it disappeared into a portal . . . ."

Hi. Have not posted here in months. But just wondering, is Art Bell doing a show? I stopped listening to Coast to Coast AM completely since George B Wells doesn't appear to be on it anymore, and when he was he did boring lame shows for the past few weeks he was on.

George Noory sucks and that's on my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Nope Ald. Wish he was , but he is still under NDA from SiriusXM. There are old shows still floating around though..

And yes George Noory sucks... like really really bad.

Hey everyone--
Just dropped by to say Hello...still searching the channels for Art.  Would love to hear his take on the missing Malaysian plane, cesium headed for the US West Coast, and other anomalies of our times...

Keep trying Uhura.  He's got to be out there somewhere.  I fear he is being held hostage by the Premiere-Nooron empire.  By the way, I love the way you fill out that uniform.   ;)

Great post; you also have to add Jerry Coleman to the list as well. As far as the greatest ever in any sport, it has to be Chick Hearn. I pray that Art returns, but the older you get, the less you care about shit. I really think that Art will stay retired.

This list should start with Vin Scully - Dodgers.

It's going to be a sad day when Vinny passes. There are not too many great announcers left. Dick Enberg is awesome, but as far as baseball is concerned, there will quite the void when Vinny is no longer with us.

There's a "new" SIT classic this week.

"Art Bell: Somewhere in Time returns to 11/2/95 for a night of "anything goes" Open Lines."

This is a new classic as it does not appear in any of the available collections out there.

Once again a big thanks goes to Premiere and Coast for sharing the love. They are our last best source of new classic Art Bell material.

Man I miss Ernie Harwell.

"For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land."

Art claims to have proposed the idea of the Sci Fi Channel and three years later the SF Channel appeared.
He also is suggesting the Car Chase Channel.

Agreed.  How awesome those two subjects alone would be and with open lines.  Art has saved me so many times over those years he was on the radio weekly.  I can remember lying in bed listening and being so happy.  No matter what else was going on in my life he was my rock.  What a crazy person I am!  But it's all true.

My fear is this thought, who really 'comes back' in their 70's?  Do you really want to?  Can somebody give me some hope?

Being in his 70's doesn't bother me. My next door neighbor just took up the hobby of building and flying remote controlled helicopters, and he just turned 99 this month, so age is just relative.

I am more concerned with Art's immaturity. Don't get your way, well then quit. How many marriages does he have? (Yes, I know Ramona passed away, but you get the idea)

If Art comes back, it won't be for long. Enjoy the old shows and the nostalgia.

Barbara Walters (age 84), Dan Rather (age 82), Larry King (age 80), Regis Philbin (age 82). All still active in the media. Art is only 68.

Yeah, his health has to hold up. Don't worry. He'll be back.

I think people are going to expect too much from Art. Listen. Don't expect Art to be back 5 nights a week. What does Stern do? Maybe three shows a week?

I hope Art will have an open schedule meaning that he can broadcast whenever he wants. Bad back a problem? Take the weekend off. See you next week! Important breaking news story? Art jumps on and comments, does a show.

Internet show? No corporate or advertiser pressure. Art does it his way. (Hey, maybe he will hook up with a network...we'll see)

Art will return.

Noory Trolls need not reply. Dipshits.

How is this relevant? I'm not quite sure what his personal life has to do with his career.

I was thinking terrestrial radio but yeah, that's not going to happen. I'd love to see Art take on Norry head to head on terrestrial radio! It's not practical, though. Art needs to take care of his family and himself. Dark Matter Radio Network is  where he will be. Flexible schedule will work fine if that's what he decides. I think that would be the best way to go. Who knows. Maybe he will do 4-5 shows a week. We'll see.
