After Drumpf refused to answer questions from Bob Woodward on MSNBC, subsequently sending Woodward into a fit of frustration, I'm convinced that the crotchety old journalist is rounding up his old posse of muckrakers to crawl directly up Donald Trump's 6. It should be interesting.

Crotchety in the presence of Trump maybe, but Woodward is not a muckraker. And he is genuinely disturbed by Trump's personal brand of evasiveness and stonewalling, as he should be.

The guy who successfully took on the Nixon White House and re-election campaign is just the guy I want to see asking questions about Trump. What he finds probably won't be enough to dissuade hardcore Trump supporters but most other people should be more open-minded.

Economically speaking, the record poor numbers in the velocity of money metric is plenty enough to tell you that there is a very severe problem with our economy. But past that stagnant wages, the fact that few households can exist anymore without two incomes (soon to be 3, then 4), unnaturally high unemployment numbers that are officially cooked by the government to look better, company after company relocating outside the country without repercussions, military cuts, lack of sensible diplomacy and a ton of other things indicates -- actually it screams -- that we are a declining country both economically and as a global power.

The way forward is technology, energy, CLEAN energy -- the one thing I found common ground with Obama.

Clean energy is quietly being solved by Lockheed-Martin rather than the solar panel/wind farm/kelp racket. It's not something to be concerned about. The national debate regarding it is just a dog and pony show.

If protectionist policies are so effective, why did Hong Kong become so wealthy by being a total free trade zone?

Because it was in the enviable position of being able to take advantage of a very poor nation that took it over while remaining generally independent of it to the point of having a separate system of government as a legacy of having been a colony of one of the richest empires on earth. The manufacturers that we do have,  can't get the parts they need. The raw materials they need. The prices go up. People start buying less products. We are a consumer-driven economy and you know what that means. We go down the tank. Not only that, foreign manufacturers do not want to do business with us. They won't move their plants over here. It's too unstable, they won't trust our economy, our leaders and our political system anymore. The dollar becomes unstable. People start buying yen and yuan and whatever the hell foreign currency instead of dollars. Next thing you know, we're not the world's Reserve currency. And if that happens, things get truly ugly.

What really happens is that from this point on factories in China and foreign nations, and ours, move increasingly to automation because it's cheaper than human labor. Real unemployment numbers continue to rise and ultimately the market begins to contract, which it already has in many sectors, because fewer people have disposable income. The only solution from here on out is domestic protectionism and regulation to forestall the effects of automation as long as we can. Yes, goods will get more expensive. Yes, the economy will contract. But that's better than putting everyone on welfare which is what we're doing now.

The dollar is doomed no matter what. It never had any business being a reserve currency in the first place, and it's been poised to lose that status for years. It's only a matter of time before the reserve currency ponzy scheme finally collapses.

I adore Elizabeth Warren.  She makes sense.  We are a community effort.  I think if there were less corruption in the system we'd all trust it more.

Take Trump, though.  He said he'd lower them on the rich.  Now he says he'll have to raise taxes on the rich.  So, if that's your gripe, you're screwed no matter how you vote.
