Also lock down the obese.  Nobody wants to see them anyway.

I think herd immunity (basically infecting everybody, or 70-90% of us as you usually see cited) is the ultimate end point, barring a vaccine, but it's a question of how fast you get there.  Even the antibody test results showing surprisingly high exposure rates (20% in NYC already and I think the one John Roberts was talking about was something like 40% in LA*) are a long way away from that, i. e. there's still a lot of the population to run through and take their chances.  So it's still slowing the rate of infection to what the hospitals and morgues can handle.

Personally I think that, since 90% of deaths (and probably a similar percentage of serious illnesses requiring hospitalization) are over 60 (WA numbers), people should look at locking down only the old.  Herd immunity among the young would build up faster (with a few regrettable anecdotes of young, healthy people that croak, to be touted by fearmongers) and protect everyone else eventually.

*and these aren't random samples, either, so while they're surprisingly high nobody knows what the real rate is

I had that same thought.  The once common situation in which multiple generations including grandparents lived in the same house (now there's a revolting thought) has diminished significantly since the 50s and 60s and with it the chances of the old folks catching bad stuff from younger family members, especially their walking petry dish grandkids.  Keep the employed working.

ItsOver

Let me know when this is all figured out.  Meanwhile, I'll just enjoy my stay in the bunker, with sardines, Hamm's, nacho cheese Doritos, while I scratch my butt, pick my nose, and floss my teeth.

Kidding aside, I am really surprised nobody official is proposing this.  All that stuff about contract tracing is containment strategy and I'd like to see arguments as to why that is still a viable approach given how widespread and early infection seems to have occurred.  If summer suppresses it to negligible levels, containment might be useful against the predicted rebound but I think it's too late for this wave.

And if the virus adapts, as viruses can do, and starts hitting younger people? I think we're better off leaving these decisions to people with actual expertise. People throw around this idea of herd immunity too lightly.

The decisions are already out of the experts' hands, thank God.  They are political, exactly as they should be, with vigorous debate encouraged on all sides, with experts given their due weight but not turned into petty dictators.  That is how free people decide things.

The thing is, it's already sort of the coping strategy since those essential businesses allowed to operate are mostly staffed by the young and energetic, i. e. we are already sacrificing the flower of youth to the scourge as we always do.  Just make it official.

Exactly! We should just stay locked down forever and trust that our elected officials will take care of us. If it’s not this virus it will just be another. Why take a chance?! They know what’s best for us.

Even if it is we should just stay locked down forever, just to be safe. Safety always over freedom! Why take a chance?! Even if they come up with a “vaccine” for this there will just be something else around the next corner. Big Brother will take care of all our needs, comrade. It really is best this way.

That shouldn't be a problem for you since you already confine yourself to your mom's basement in anticipation of an attack by Henry Kissinger and his globalist hordes.

Getting herd immunity quickly, before the virus mutates into infinite variations, then is the key to eradication. Amirite?

Rather than simply playing dice with people's lives (something that many forget, that people are dying in large numbers) the sensible thing would be to test your hypothesis first, to make sure that people actually are developing some resistance.

I take comfort in the fact that you and your wife will be dead soon. Of course, we’ll still be here cleaning up your boomer messes after you’re gone, you useless piece of Kissinger worshipping shit. DIAF

I know, right.  Wasting all that conventional ordnance when two or three (depending on the wind) nuclear devices would have done the trick.

No, apparently the key is to inject yourself with bleach. I've been sceptical about these nostrums in the past but I really think you should give this one a shot.

I can only hope that your progeny suffers greatly but you’ve pretty much guaranteed that with your lifetime of political choices.  ;D

Absolutely.  But with states considering resistance passports, experts are already gambling that this behaves like other viruses and exposure and recovery (or just not getting seriously ill in the first place, which seems very likely given how long the virus went undetected) = resistance.  So I think I'm on solid(ish) ground.

With the country turning into a patchwork of quarantine approaches you actually have real test cases racing ahead of any scientific testing.  It is too late; politics has moved faster than science.  I think there will be quite a few oopses when too many people start croaking, but dividing the population into two based on what we know now seems like a practical, sensible use of data.

Did you ever gargle with Listerine?  The stuff that claims to kill 99% of germs?

Sounds an awful lot like placing a disinfectant into the body.  But I’m not a doctor.

Agree.  It looks like the the mutation rate of the current evolved viruses can overtake human adaptation through natural exposure and the building of antibodies thereby nullifying herd immunity.

Isn’t living playing dice with peoples lives?  Hit by a bus, tripping on the stairs, catching an infectious disease, heart disease, cancer;  something is going to get us.  Taking your argument to the extreme,  we should all off ourselves now to prevent dying in the future.  Life is so futile, why bother.

K_Dubb

And also, to show you how much I care about the actually vulnerable instead of vague genuflections toward some absolute ideal of not risking a single individual life that aren't the least bit sustainable, I'd point out that a country run by the young and energetic would make maintaining the aged lockdown easier as services would spring up to keep the geezers in their houses and entertained.  Lock them up and bleed them dry.  Wealth redistribution on a massive scale -- you like that, don't you?

It's hard to imagine you out on the links. I bet you have a swing that makes you look like a gravedigger, and the wind must play havoc with your combover.

I like the creativity. I'm sure there are not many places where the image of a combover blowing in the wind is just casually tossed out there...

Of course, I know people like this exist. I tip them at Xmas, occasionally hang one of them when I catch them poaching rabbits on my land, but it's another thing to get them up close like this. I think we can all agree that the Boston accent is the worst of the worst but this isn't far behind. It's a nice blend of incipient criminality and obvious retardation. However you managed to keep a woman around sounding like that is one of the world's great mysteries. Is the dear lady hearing impaired?
I will grant that a strong Boston accent may not be the most pleasing thing to one's ears but I am not sure I would put it below an Aussie or your island's own Scouser accent.

Retardation?  Keep a woman?  What kind of a pitiful rebuke was that?  Go back to Carl's video at about 26 seconds and note the sweet pronunciation of the word "refrigerator" - say it softly to yourself over and over until you have perfected it.  Then drop it on that, erm, "robust" Romanian housekeeper you keep captive.  There is panty peeling power in that manner of speech.  Will you have the gumption to try?

Now K_Dubb has chastised you before on you lot fawning over the French language.  If I recall correctly, even stating that you at times try to "ape your betters" across the channel.  As a proud native son of the mitten, I take some relish in the way we have pissed on the Frenchies.  Took their land, booted them out and fixed up the wonky pronunciation of some of the places they left for us.  Elegant names like Pointe Aux Barques [Point O' Bark] and Bois Blanc [Bob-Lo] have been corrected rather nicely.  So go check your not so busy "shed-yool", Exchequer Boy and see when that rerun of Emmanuel's Perfume comes on.  I am quite sure you will be available, if not exactly sober...................

I'd recommend you stick to camel dung immersion until the results of ongoing clinical trials of bleach injection therapy are published.  Considering that the idea originated with the Clorox, a company in which Trump holds a heavy stake, one must be careful.
