This is an interesting graphic. It doesn't show the 1 case in Alaska, but it appears the primary cause for mass shootings is I-95. We need to do background checks before people can drive on I-95.

LOL.  Half the people that drive on I-95 should have their driver's license revoked.  I used to drive on it a lot when I lived in Jersey.  Lots of nuts on that interstate and this was before the advent of cellphones.  I can't imagine what it is like now.

The FBI is by definition an investigative institution and rarely prevents a first instance crime (unless they've set someone up). I'd like to know if they're required to share data on suspected radical Islamists with local LE.  It's ironic that he was denied when he tried to buy body armor, but was able to walk into a gun shop and walk out with an AR15 and a ton of ammo after being investigated for terrorism ties three separate times. And his mosque invited a foreign guest speaker who promotes killing homosexuals, and had one guy join Al Nusra and become a suicide bomber.

The threat can be dealt with, but not with blinders on and our shoelaces together.

Thanks for the explanation, but I'd naively suggest that if those organizational boundaries mean that a closed FBI investigation isn't handed off to another organization such that further suspicious behavior by a subject, like buying body armor and an assault rifle, can't be followed up on, that is a problem.

If, as you seem to suggest (God forbid) that organization is the local boys down at the donut shop, then so be it.  That purchase should have attracted attention.

Would you like to see where most of the mass shootings in 2015 occurred?

Chicago, Illinois. You know, the city with the toughest gun laws in the country. Where you can't buy a gun or ammo in the city limits, and it is illegal to carry one. 2996 people killed or wounded. Outlawing guns does not seem to work in Chicago.
That argument falls apart when you look at the gun markets within an easy drive from Chicago, and who the perps are.  Its less than 3 hours drive from the Woodlawn free fire zone in Chicago to Madison WI or Indianapolis IN, and all the hundreds of gun sellers in between.  When I go to gun shows here in AZ, there are always cars from gun-strict CA in the parking lot.  The article below discusses only the top few crime gun sellers in the US and doesn't include the hundreds of small shops, garage-based FFLs and gun flea markets/shows in the "neighborhood" of big urban areas with stricter gun laws. Two those mentioned are a nice Saturday drive from the West Side. FWIW, I'm a life long gun owner and shooter, and try to be rational about it.

Shooter Omar Mateen’s father says he’s saddened by massacre, calls gunman ‘a good son’

It was the guy's Dad.

What do you expect him to say?

You wouldn't be emotionally loyal to your son's memory with the time you spent with him, regardless of what he did?

The father also condemned what he did as well.

I know, it IS infowars...
The trouble is that as soon as a fringe kook like Jones touches the story, the MSM won't touch it unless they're pushed into it kicking and screaming.

I live just outside the city limits of Kennesaw, GA where it is the law that every one must own a gun. Crime is much lower here than in other towns in suburban Atlanta.  Nobody wants to mess with anybody from Kennesaw.  The law has been in place since '83 and no one has shot up the town yet so I don't see much validity in your argument.

I can see where many criminals would find another town easier pickings. But to SV's point, are most people in the town limits armed most of the time? I would doubt it.

And anyway, what would be the appeal of living in a place where the law required the average citizen to carry a gun based on people feeling that much danger of becoming crime victims, whether the danger was real or not? Probably the same sort of appeal as gated communities, another response to either being threatened or just feeling threatened.

Hillary is also calling for a ban on gun sales to people who are on the no-fly list.  That might sound reasonable, however, there has never been an explanation as to how someone is put on the no fly list - and there is no appeal once you are on it.  Senator Ted Kennedy, of all people, was put on it.

Well that's a point in favor of no fly/no buy although putting him on a no drive list would have saved at least one life.

Not required to carry a gun just possess one.  There is a difference.  Just the idea of someone owning a gun does a lot to discourage crime in Kennesaw.

I'd like to see a comparison with similar-sized outlying suburbs that are a similar distance from low income areas of nearby large cities.  Where I live, there hasn't been a violent crime in years, and statistical case could be made that its due to the preponderance of white hair. The notion of any of my neighbors taking a shot at an intruder would make me sleep in a safe room.

Compare Kennesaw with Lawrenceville, Georgia then.  Both are the same distance from Atlanta.  You'll find the crime rate is much higher in Lawrenceville.

The father raises a great point - GOD should be the one to punish these dirty homos, not that misbehaving son of his!

So we are going on a witch hunt now against parent's who don't follow your script of acts of contrition.

This country is getting out of hand with mob mentality.

I call this 'The argument from Bruce Willis'. Yes, there is a possibility it might work. But, as I said, a totally open situation where everyone has access to the same gear means that you will also have to factor in that there will be people in the mix who are up to no good. In that situation you would be very unwise to ever leave the house without a weapon - whether walking the dog, taking the kids to school, or even out in the yard watering the lawn. I don't think the odds are in your favour, that's all, but for many people a part of their thinking has been paralysed where they find even the thought of it an assault on their liberty rather than a practical measure to prevent tragedy.

What you talkin' about, Willis?

I know it was after 2AM and most couldn't tell the difference between the tunes and a high-powered rifle being fired rapidly in an enclosed area.  They've been showing an Snapchat video on TV from someone inside as the shooting began and the person was totally oblivious...and one of the dead.

If true,...50 is a helluva kill count for 1 shooter. I haven't seen anything on Fox News yet.

I don't remember what time it was at, but I did think I had heard a witness saying they saw two other shooters that got away.  I might have misunderstood.  Also, in drama, peoples minds don't record and recall as well as they normally do.  A victim is never an accurate witness.
