Behind the Candelabra.  The makeup effects are amazing. The whole movie is so over the top, it's quite comical. 

im sorry but... i found it horrifying... in a funny way tho... michael douglas looks like every description i've ever heard of reptilians.  Like I dont think george dubbya is one but... seriously this guy....

I got Sexy Beast from the Everett Library though. I had trouble following what was going on all the time and understanding what they were saying. I was expecting something more like Rififi or Resevoir Dogs. I didnt realize much of the movie would be taken up with Ben Kingsley pressuring the other guy to go on the job. But it was still good.

Great movie - it's in my instaQ on Netflix.

I watched The Iceman the other evening and it was surprisingly decent.  And another good couple of movies The Good Shepard and Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy.

holy shit man... i love those foreign tarantinos lol.  kinsley's character was fucking great and russell crow used to know how to act apparently!  yeah so i'm gonna see if i can't find anything else mr winstone is in I found him vaguely lovable.


the iceman movie was awesome too... Michael shannon has a few other lesser known films and rolls other than his recent zod and boardwalk empire stuff i really like... theres a few really good actors from empire i see popping up lately in good films and roles as well.

ill have to check the good shepard.  tinker taylor was great too it's funny i dont think it really got mentioned much... well to me anyways.

I just got the urge to drop in for a look for the first time in weeks and noticed this thread, and I suddenly realized it interested me. Huh. Go figure.

Amarcord 1973

Heh. Funny movie. Let me ask if you may have noticed something in another movie that I made a connection to Amarcord about. There was a sort of semi-arthouse, slightly cynical comedy in the early 80's called Local Hero starring Peter Riegert ("Boone" from Animal House -1978) with support from Burt Lancaster, plus a lot of Scottish actors I don't know. It was about a tiny Scottish town chosen by an oil conglomerate as the potential site for a big new refinery operation, and how this cynical, selfish American yuppie oilman who is sent there to check it out on the downlow winds up being changed by it. Anyway, there's this running gag where every time the Yank steps outside he's almost run over by some unknown motorcyclist wildly gunning his bike through the small town. And it reminded me of a similar scene or two in Amarcord.

I always assumed it was an homage, but although I've seen it a couple of times many years ago, I don't recall the Fellini movie well enough to know if the motorcycle in it was a single scene or a recurring image. Anyway, have you seen Local Hero, and if so, do you have an opinion about whether the bike is intentional?

A Touch of Class 1973

Bittersweet comedy about an adulterous affair that suffers from endless logistical problems...and fights. Ending is about what you'd expect from a film of that era. But it was refreshing to see a romantic comedy that didnt try to appeal to too many different audiences.

I finally got around to watching Nebraska. The main reason I watched it was because they filmed part of it in my city and I wanted to see if I recognized anything. Not a bad movie, slow at times. Bruce Dern was good.

I watched The Journey of Natty Gann with my 12-year-old daughter last night.  It's a 1985 Disney film with Meredith Salenger (who mostly left the film biz).  Thought it was a very engaging movie.  If you've got kids, give it a go!

Hahaha, yeah, he's just one of Lo Pan's monsters. I don't believe that there is much explanation for him.

As an aside, there was a woman who waitressed at a local diner I used to frequent, who reminded me of that beast. Had the same bone structure and eyeballs.

Yeah, best not to try and analyze it too much haha. Just roll with it.



A little trivia; Kurt Russell was sick and running a very high fever during the filming of that movie. You can see him perspiring very heavily, especially on the elevator scenes. That was not applied by the makeup department.

John Carpenter made some fantastic movies... I saw his version of "The Thing" again recently too, brilliant stuff, trying to keep track of who's infected, and when is a real challenge:D.

Haven't seen Local Hero, so don't know.

Lovely little film by Bill Forsyth, who also made the equally charming Gregory's Girl. The film has a definite environmental message at it's core, but it's really a character driven story about a representative from American company who comes to a small Scottish town to buy the rights to drill on their beach. The characters grow on you, and there's a touch of magical realism: the legend of the selkie is brought up and one of the female characters has webbed toes. Burt Lancaster is the owner of the American oil company and Peter  Riegert (Animal House) his representative who gradually is won over by the villagers. If you're a Doctor Who fan, a young Peter Capaldi is one of the villagers. Ironically, the village phone booth is iconic for this film.
