I love horror, just watched Death By China this morning.  Holy shit... it's a documentary that will make your blood run cold.

On the other hand... Star Trek Into Darkness... w h o a.  So much happy I nearly lost gravity.  Good times, but the China thing will be nagging me now forever.  And ever.

I watched Parkland this weekend... pretty good movie. Also watched The man from Earth... screenplay was slightly week but an interesting subject.

Been watching Heroes...  Very much enjoyed season one, much of season 2... where I am now (Netflix viewer only) here in season 3 or 4 I think, I have soooo lost interest.  Characters seem to die, regenerate, show up as other-dimensional/other time versions of themselves, etc.  New characters show up for a few episodes for the viewers to invest in, only to disappear without a trace.  It's like Lost all over again....  Blech....

Disney's Fantasia.

I watch it once a year to blow all the built up hydrocarbons out of the engine. Ninety minutes before viewing I take kava kava extract for threshold processing, and then more after viewing, just before sleep.

Then I hang out with Walt in a lucid dream platform and we talk about the meaning of life and death. Contact with a praeternatural rodent practicing high magic follows soon thereafter.

I was trying to watch Star Trek II Khan last night but my copy is messed up and stops at 49 minutes.   Had to watch it in german to finish it.  Nicht lustig!   I felt like I was watching Das Boot!

A painting of mine was used on set in Season 3 :). Episode 'Our Father' Here's a pic from on set. Hiro's father's (Takei) home.

For some reason, I find myself thinking of an episode of Rod Serling's Night Gallery.

The Tune In Dan's Cafe.

That was an eerie little gem.

Just watched the documentary American Movie and the accompanying bonus low budget short horror film Coven.

One of best documentaries you've never seen. Add in the bonus film and you've got the three point landing: Humor Humanity & Horror.

It's alright. It's okay. There's something to live for. Jesus told me so.

That must have been very rewarding, Chine!  Continued success with your art!

The other night I watched Wim Wenders' Alice in the Cities from about 1974 on Turner Classics channel followed by a 2-hour doc on (mostly) German filmmakers and films of the 70's (but Bernardo Bertolucci and Pier Paolo Pasolini were covered too) part of TCM's series about the history of film. I can't explain it but I found it all incredibly sad and depressing. I truly can't understand it. Is it as simple and as mundane as pure nostalgia, and the fact I recognized so much of the time depicted in the movies and that its all gone? Or was it that I find so much of the work of people like Rainer Werner Fassbinder irredeemably vile and hopeless and hateful? I'm at a loss.

I do like Werner Herzog so much more, not that I understand his vision any better, but at least he has an understandable plot usually, albeit insane characters - or actors, as he used the certifiable Klaus Kinski several times. I did find Wenders' Wings of Desire achingly beautiful. The shot of the angels silently standing atop the Victory Column in the Tiergarten in Berlin, looking across a silent city in stark blacks and greys and white, I find moves me to tears. How he captures the longing of the angels to feel just a little human emotion makes my chest hurt to think of it.

So why did that German movie and that documentary make me feel so lousy? Weird.

Sardondi, have you seen Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty?  I thought it was a very warm, lovely film.  I still need to finally watch Wings of Desire -- I have been hearing praise for that movie for 20+ years now.

Can't believe I still haven't seen Stealing Beauty because I really like Jeremy Irons and Liv Tyler. Both films I'm going to jot down. Have either of you seen Damage with Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche?

So, we were car shopping today (what a pain. Ugh.)...picked up a white pizza from our favorite pizzeria. Now, watching Sideways again which we own. Also, Chocolat. Cinematic treats... All that's missing is watching Like Water for Chocolate.

Since we are talking about movies that take lots of work to understand, has anyone seen Holy Motors? I saw it about 2 weeks ago and had to do plenty of internet research to figure out what was going on (making fun of how cliche the movie industry is these days). Some of it I got and some of it went over my head. Alot of it reminded me of Candide.

TCM had some other movie on a while back (along the same lines and History of Film theme) called Black Moon. I'm not sure at all what that was about, but its from 1975. Anyone have any insight into this film?

I just watched Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth

Not sure what to make of it. If this is after the cure, its hard to imagine before the cure. I'm not sure how much to believe the guy. It sort of reminds me of a Martin Scorsese movie.

Any good/worth seeing? How hard is it to get this movie?

I don't know because I saw it in a theatre. As I said. I liked it. The person I went with said that the plot was a little too "predictable". It has the distinction of being about a dirty cop at a time when they didnt usually make movies about that sort of thing because the Hayes code frowned on it. Carolyn Jones, who was on the Addams Family, has a small part as a B girl.

We are spoiled in this area when it comes to DVDs and videos, because we have Scarecrow, one of the biggest rental places in the country. They let you keep them for a week and I usually go to Seattle at least once a week. So what's available to us in DVDs and videos isnt a good reflection of what's available in the rest of the country. I've never used Netflix, so don't know how they are for old or obscure movies.

Europa Report Low budget and predictable in some ways, but the images of Europa are stunning and for some reason I can't explain, the story's stayed with me, probably because it was the first hard science sci fi movie to come along in a while. I don't want to post spoilers, but the ending leaves a whole heap of loose logical ends if you think about the Europeans' effects on the native people's health during the exploration of the new world.

I found Herzog's Fitzcarraldo to be so compelling, and I can't put my finger on exactly why though.  There's just something strange and haunting about that movie for me.

As for Wenders' Wings of Desire what really amazed me about it was the dialogue, so deep and lyrical.  Another Wenders movie that I remember being pretty cool was Until the End of the World which has a great soundtrack as I recall - I'll have to check that out again and see if it holds up.

I watched Alice in den Städten last night.  Gorgeous black and white.

Alice In The Cities (1974)

It's on Hulu Plus.

The Private Life of Don Juan(1934)
One of Douglas Fairbanks last films. Quite weird, a comedy, a farce actually. Merle Oberon also has a part. Since its British they get away with some material that probably wouldn't have gotten past the Hayes Code in this country.
Scarecrow has been gradually selling off their VHS collection and replacing them with DVDs, so my friend has been taking advantage to add to his collection.

There was so much potential in The Man From Earth.  It fell slightly flat, but was a fascinating premise.  Also, you'd think such a man might be more charismatic, no?

Saw Scenic Route today.  Kind of reminded me of The Canyon, where things keep getting worse and worse.

I watched it and the movie was ok, the science eh.... ok so if we remove the science facts a little this movie and any other that takes humans to Jupiter works.  But realistically folks, we will NEVER make it to Jupiter as humans, unless we have a very thick lead lined space craft or other materials are invented to shield against that kind of radiation.  This trip is a robotics only mission should it ever really occur.  I know the water on Europa has been long believed to be a possible location for life outside Earth, so I would Love to see images from another object we've yet to visit, just not volunteering for THAT first mission =)

Fitzcarraldo is great:  probably my fave Herzog film.  Have you ever seen the documentary on the making of that film, 'Burden of Dreams'?  Utterly fascinating.  Highly recommended.

I didn't know about it, but I've heard the making of that film was a story in it's own right - I'll definitely check that out, thanks.

Attempt no landing on Europa....

I've watched and rewatched Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog... it's probably not for everyone, but I get a big kick out of it.  My daughter and I sing all the songs.

I think Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a good way to put a smile on one's face.

My wife and I have watched it several times.

QuoteThe world is a mess, and I just need to rule it.

I just watched "Happiness", directed by Todd Solondz.

They say you have to have a sick sense of humor to laugh at it, and I was laughing my ass off.  Especially at most of the scenes with Dylan Baker's character.
