I wonder how the NYT would 'classify' Cubans?  I was fortunate to go in 2005 for two weeks holiday..and was astonished at the melting pot that it is..I didn't know that 11% are Chinese origin..The Spanish influence is well known (I think about 55%), but the collection from other continents is amazing.. To see facial features of a black African but white skin, and ginger hair, is something else! And the opposite..Caucasian facial features with black skin and black hair. A lot of the women were absolutely beautiful to..Curves in all the right places!
It's probably similar in other Caribbean islands too.
Dunno. But I'd love to see where they've called anyone, anywhere, at any time, "White Hispanic". Perhaps they have...but I don't think so. Because that was the Times's way of saying in every story it did, "Pssssst: this is the bad guy." The Times's editorial team gets the vapors about what it calls "dog-whistles", which they have declared are double-secret racist codewords used by evil conservatives - I'm sorry, I'm being redundant - conservatives to surreptitiously communicate; yet the Times itself doesn't even bother to use code or secrecy, but goes straight to the racist heart of it's message: "nail the white guy". Hell, why didn't they just go ahead and call Zimmerman "Ofay" or "Blue-eyed Devil"?

I suppose so, yeah. A lot of Canadians are also in on the continued enslavement too. Bastards.

There is some merit to that.  The other school of thought is that interacting with western tourists they learn about our country and our culture - and our freedom - and that promotes goodwill and gives them a chance to maybe see what they've been told isn't true.  And more difficult to suppress.  There is always going to be enough to feed the military and government bureaucracy - a lot of tourist dollars go to the families that open their homes for lodging, to the small café owners and workers, to the taxi drivers, people renting bikes, etc.

Well from my point of view no. If I go on holiday, especially to a foreign country I don't get into discussing politics. I certainly don't tell the locals how bloody fortunate I am and how crap their lives are in comparison. I've been to Kenya three times, and if you want to see poverty, go there. Their government was/ is probably more corrupt than Cuba's. As is almost any African country. The get around is you don't pay the man..you shake hands with a little 'present' in your palm.

Cuba was chosen, because at the time I was step father to two teenagers who hadn't been long haul, and we wanted a decent holiday (It had been a LONG year) for a reasonable cost. They enjoyed it,  end of.

As for the perception of freedom. Again it's subjective. Few understand or can begin to solve the problems surrounding Cuba. And there are many countries that the US deals with and have dealt with for decades who have a far worse human rights record than Cuba; I don't see any sanctimonious admonishments about tourists visiting them; or companies trading with them. Funny that.

I'm not defending Castro et al, and there is an air of dilapidation away from the touristy places. Havanah is a blast; Music down every street you walk down and I felt safer there than in London. Downsides? The food is marginal..Apart from seafood, and that is fantastic..But then the locals are not starving, neither are they obese- can you honestly say that the USA (The most obese country on the planet, with the highest diabetes per capita) eats healthily?

I read the essay A White Teacher in a Black High School.
If you doubt what the writer is saying has some basis in fact, do a search and read the recently disclosed, actual text messages from Mr. Trayvon Martin's cell phone.
I did. The language and content of those texts confirmed an awful lot of what the writer was saying in the essay.

Anyone who doubts the troof contained therein has obviously not experienced sufficient levels of diversity, and needs to achieve a higher diversity exposure level before they can learn the secrets contained within. I, personally, am a 33rd degree grand master in diversity experience.

They are not starving because the US is their largest food supplier.  Despite the castro's claim of a "blockade" US Treasury regulations have an exemption for food and medicine, and many US state governors visit the island to work out trade deals. The only depth needed to understand Cuba is to understand that it's run by a criminal gang.  fidel was a big fan of hitler during WWII, but switched to "communism" when the Russians supported his takeover scheme.  Jesse Jackson accuses Florida of being an apartheid state, but that term actually applies to Cuba.  There's one Cuba for the tourists and another for the people of Cuba.

Technically, just about every country these days is run by a criminal gang. Ours just wear suits and started out at Goldman Sachs.

Yeah; and the same can be said for nearly every tourist spot on the planet. You think the people of Barbados live to the same standard as those spending $10000 on a two week holiday there? India? Largest democracy in the world; vast majority live in abject poverty. Cuba isn't the bogeyman of the world, not by a long way. Castro supported Hitler? So did Preston Bush..Dubya's grandad. He helped finance Hitler's war machine.  That's the problem with cherry picking bad fruit; you don't always realise what you left behind.

Juan

Don't know a Preston Bush, but if you mean Prescott Bush, he, along with Averill Harriman, ran the Union Bank which held assets of a German steel magnate.  In 1942, the bank was accused by the US government of holding Nazi assets, but a subsequent investigation proved that accusation incorrect.  But the government seized the assets anyway.  Several journalists and The Anti-Defamation League say Bush was not a Nazi sympathizer.

Apartheid is not about living standards - it's about the law forcing those standards.

But if we want to talk about living standards, in 1958, the year before castro took over, Cuba was in third or forth place in the Americas by several economic measurements with only the US, Canada and sometimes Chile having a better economy.  The standard of living exceeded many countries in Europe.  Cuba was not the third world country it is now.

Prescott; hey ho.. So they held assets. The implication that they had no idea what Germany might be up to? But the point is moot. A lot of financial institutions and corporations made and still make a lot of money from really bad people and situations. I remember post Iraq (2nd ne) watching a fly on the wall about it..There was a seminar and the guy doing the speech said to the assembled throng; There's a hell of a lot of money to be made in Iraq, a lot of money" No mention of helping the population though..

No it isn't: It's the separation of cultures/ races/ skin colours/ demograph from each other purely because of those differences..South Africa being the most recent countrywide example recently overruled.

Cuba doesn't have apartheid. No-one is separated because of any of the above. Sure it's an atheist country, but then I don't go along with religious fanatics who judge someones worth and 'goodness' by if they pray to their particular god. When was the last openly atheist President or Prime Minister? Not sure there's been one.

That's as big a strawman argument as you can build. Are you seriously comparing like with like? It has an economic embargo on it for a start. Plus the fact that south/ central American countries have had more than a cursory glance from DC in the last 50 years. Cuba unlike Brazil hasn't had a rain forest to decimate. Unlike Columbia it hasn't a Cocaine harvest to gather.. Biggest export from Cuba? Sugar.

But then, many countries have slumped economically, even the USA..Detroit was mentioned elsewhere..Havanah is in a far better state of repair than Detroit..by a margin.

I think this pretty well captures the distinction in a nutshell:

"The most famous white Hispanic helped rescue 4 Americans. The most famous black Caucasian refused to rescue 4 Americans! Who’s A HATER?"

I guess I understand it, though: it's only fair since conservatives so often try to pass for liberals at their rallies and then cause a disturbance, breaches of the peace or otherwise act out in hopes of causing an embarrassing incident....Well they do, don't they?.....Uh, don't they?......

Well, at least she's honest. Except her racism is something other that whan she is trying to project here, she is anti-white (and apparently anti-"white hispanic" as well). These people are the real haters. They aren't content with equal protection under the law. They want to control where we freely choose to live, where we work, who are friends are, all in the persuit of a liberal fantasy known as "fairness". They need a hobby.

White liberals practice apartheid all the time. Hyannis Port is 99% white. Enforced "diversity" is for the poor white trash and middle class they despise, not for themselves and their children.

I would urge extreme caution in reading anything the Daily Mail issues as facts. I'm not saying the story is incorrect; but you need to remember the demograph of it's readership: Mainly easily outraged at anything that isn't 'them'. I can't take the DM seriously when the right hand column is essentially photos of alleged celebrities who spill their tits out of a dress, and it's news.

Yet another progressive provocateur...

The people - and let's be clear, it's the 'Progressive' leadership and their accomplices in the Media - that are always injecting race into everything, always insisting what a racist nation we are, always ready to smear everyone else with accusations, never allowing us to put race behind us.  Look how they have people stirred up and divided this week - this is the enemy within.

Most people understand it's politics, just to get votes and supporters, to poison the atmosphere in their favor, but think about the effect it has on already mis-educated black kids.  Hearing this garbage continuously, constantly lied to and told they don't have a chance, how many just give up on life before they really even get started?

The Left has a lot to answer for.  Look at Obama, destroying as much as he can as fast as he can - this is not an accident, or incompetence - the Left plans to survive to rule our destroyed country.

From Paperboy:  "The Left has a lot to answer for.  Look at Obama, destroying as much as he can as fast as he can - this is not an accident, or incompetence - the Left plans to survive to rule our destroyed country."

I feel exactly the same... well, almost exactly the same:  Look at Bush, destroying as much as he can as fast as he can -- this is not an accident, or incompetence -- the Right plans to survive to rule our destroyed country.

Oh right. Bush. Forgot he was still president. Bush fucked up a lot of things, but he isn't president now, and hasn't been for five years. Time to hold your guy responsible. At least bush didn't destroy the health care system, even though he didn't help with his medicare part B.

Juan

I thought you lefties considered Bush a complete, incompetent idiot.  I thought it was Cheney who did all the evil.
Ha.

The point, UFOFill, is that Paperboy repeatedly offers absolutist perspectives (Obama is absolutely evil/wicked/corrupt, etc.).  It works both ways.  See how that works?  How 'bout this?  Whoever the next Republican president is, he/she will ONLY want to destroy this country.

I routinely make the friggin' point that the left ain't perfect.  I point out specific people attached to the left who I think are idiots/dishonest/corrupt.

You want to say that Bush did not destroy our Medicare system? Fine.  He DID destroy the economy.  Wait, you don't like the sound of that?  Bush destroyed the economy.  Still no better?  That feels like an unfair assessment, does it?

Take a look again at the last statement in Paperboy's post.  Do you think his words sound fair to someone who disagrees (politically) with him?

Juan

This raises an interesting concept.  The left accuses the right of taking absolutist perspectives.  I wonder if the left does that.  I'll be watching to see.

You modified while I was typing.  Yes, indeed Bush did his share of destroying the economy.  It wasn't all him, but he had a lot to do with it.

Yes, UFOFill, there certainly ARE those on the left who use absolutist language.  The left has plenty of idiots, "plenty to answer for" as either you or Paperboy said above.  And, further, I think that there are honorable, intelligent, well-intentioned and competent people on the right.  However, there are some on this forum who refuse to say something similar about the left.  The result is an echo chamber.  Echo chambers are not terribly useful other than in hardening beliefs and closing minds.

George Zimmerman should have his name legally changed to Ben Gazzi so the media will never ever mention him again.
