Art always VERY MISTAKENLY thought himself the smartest kid in the room, and if he didn't immediately understand some theory in a by-the-numbers manner, he was 700% cocksure that no one else could get it either.  I remember many times back in the '90s, I was trying to follow RCH on some theory, and Art just rushed him and essentially told him that whatever RCH was saying didn't matter to whatever point RCH was trying to make -- got that?
Reason #63 why I am NOT a devotee of "Saint Art."  :P ;D

Art had to look out for the lowest common denominator in his audience, most of whom probably really couldn't follow the fast-talking, bullshit-weaver that Hoaxland usually was.  Otherwise, he'd probably lose the audience.  The really smart kids in the room were probably always a minority, anyway, and there wasn't any advanced class for them to skip to, so they just had to sit it out until a guest more interesting to them showed up.

Yeah, remember that at least a non-trivial part of the audience believes in things like the 9/11/2001 attacks were from a plasma beam weapon, that homeopathy is something more than just water, and that their intention can change the structure of a crystal, and that Uri Gellar's voice can make a dead clock come back to life.

I still think Art had some sort of underlying hatred or just plain old annoyance when it comes to hoaxy... When I hear the old shows it really just sounds to me like Art's letting Hoax do his thing to a point cause god knows a large majority of the audience thought it possibly true back then...  I really sense bad vibes in many of his old appearances.  Maybe it's just me.

I think hoagland had a great deal of credibility with his theory of the face on mars with the want-to-believe-above-anything-else crowd. That was in the late 70's to mid 90's. I think Art probably gave a bit of latitude to hoagland but soon smelled a bullshit artist. By that point though Art may have thought he was kind of tied to hoagland. I remember Art interviewing him when he started his "look it's a robot head". It felt to me like Art was restraining himself from choking hoagland.

All speculation on my part but there it is.

I went to some trouble (and a little expense) to investigate the "robot head" claim.

Hahah, the comments in that post were very entertaining. Hoagland's followers sound like a bunch of cult members...'open your eyes, you are misguided', etc  ;D

I was listening to the fine art stream today, and Art was interviewing hoaxland.  I definitely picked up disdain in his voice.

Ah, my favorite comments come from the eloquent "KVLTdotcom" who is clearly an expert in the field of image manipulation:

QuoteI tell you how I take your train of thought. It much reminds me of the way a stubborn, old church father who absolutely refuses to see anything but what is printed in his little book of faith! WAKE UP, the truth is everywhere around you if only you will stop and open your eyes!

Oh dear, perhaps he needs to stop playing with the Halloween makeup.

To which the unspoken coda is

"...and only I am wise enough and insightful enough to see this truth and alert you to it. Listen to me, you cretinous fools!"

Richard has never been hampered by feelings of mere adequacy.

He definitely figured out how to use the "glowing edges" filter in Photoshop... what a pro.

I can't believe the Hoax-cultists are so actively protesting on dorkmission...  So defensive of thier high-priest.

Richard C Hoaglund is a lesson to us all in the annals of media-o-cracy. He is a media glutton approaching  Sarah Palin class. Unfortunately in my point of view his rationality is a small subset of his overall radio presence.

I find myself agreeing with him only in the emotional sense that the Uniied States can and must persist in space exploration. Much of his assertions beyond that poison his own argument by joining the case for space with the case for space nuttiness.

He does for space research what McCarthyism did for anti-Communism. Poisons the well.

I never believed in any sense in the Martian 'face' nor in a NASA plot to withhold vital space knowledge from the public. This and other claims almost always come with promises of future justification and revelations to come (next time he's on the air) which don't pan out as promised, or demand a level of buy-in that increases with fractal intensity. I decided some time ago that he acts almost instinctively to prolong his presence on-air.

I don't think he should be put out to C2C pasture as long as he has listeners. On the other hand, if he would consent to go on the air with his therapist, I'd be tempted to tune in myself.

Hey, thanks for posting your blog link expat.  I never saw it before.  And I just added my comments to your blog post.

Hoagland was on again last night.  Expat has posted a transcript and his comments on his blog, and I posted a fairly thorough and more detailed analysis on my own blog.  Short version: Ziggurat isn't real.

You're the guy who runs the bad science blog? Thats really cool actually, I have literally read every word of your site. Im a huge James Randi fan.

did you catch George Knapp's recent show a few weeks back where he and his guest totally bashed CSICOP and debunkers including Randi - they referred to him as the "UnAmazing Randi" ?  ;D

astroguy

No, I'm not the guy who runs the bad science blog.  I didn't even know there was one ... but I run my "Exposing PseudoAstronomy" blog and podcast.  Regarding bashing CSI (formerly CSICOP) and Randi, I have that episode in my queue to listen to, but I just got back from two weeks of travel so am a bit behind.

Didn't take offense, just didn't want to be given credit for something that's not mine.  I also just finished spending the last two hours locating the coordinates of Hoagie's ziggurat, so I'm a bit tired.

I no fan of intellectual dishonesty whatever the source. Of course Randi has the better end of it usually, but he's not above intellectual cheating himself. It seems that in the last decade or so he's cheated a lot more than back when he was almost a household name. IIRC he's got a particularly bad record with NDE's, in that he cherry picks facts, misreports cases, leaves out evidence, etc.

Wonder why Hoagland didn't mention this new discovered Mars anomaly, posted at the c2c website tonight:

July 21, 2012
Hole in Mars Found
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter currently circling Mars has discovered an unusual hole in the Red Planet. The hole is located on the slopes of Mars' Pavonis Mons volcano and appears to be the opening to an underground cavern measuring about 115 feet across and 65 feet deep. Researchers are unclear why a circular crater surrounds the opening.

I'm not sure why this is news, I could've sworn that this was reported like two years ago.  Maybe it's a new one.  Anyway, it's just a cave.  We know of over a dozen on Mars, at least one found by a school group.  Not that that wouldn't stop Hoagland.

HAL 9000

I'm not sure why a number of folks had difficulty finding Dick Hoaxland's manipulation of original NASA photographs on EXPAT's site - it kinda jumped out at me last night from the original.

I can provide definitive proof of his fraud. Here is how I did it, so you might replicate my finding.

First, I downloaded the original NASA photograph (the high-resolution version ~3MB). Using Photoshop, I rotated the original 90° clockwise. I then created a new layer in PS, and placed Hoaxland's fraudulent creation as posted on the C2C site in that layer. I then simply over-layed Hoaxland's fraudulent pic over the exact same area as found in the original NASA photo, and used a video fade in/fade out technique about every 2 seconds so you can clearly see what Hoaxland manipulated. I also have my original Photoshop file (.psd) available for download, so you can manually turn the layer on and off yourself, and be able to view any portion at any resolution.

I did not in any way manipulate or change the original NASA photo, or Hoaxland's fake.

To download the original NASA photo, go HERE

To download my original Photoshop file (with layers) so you can view for yourself at any magnification, go to Link 1 or Link 2

I have created a Youtube video in high-resolution (720p) - it MUST be viewed in hi-res mode to be able to discern Hoaxland's fraud well.

Additionally, you can download my same Hoaxland fraud video in hi-res by simply downloading the attached mp4 video. Guests: you must be a member to see/download attachments, so why not register now and join the fun here at CoastGab?

One last thought: since numerous people had trouble finding where, on the hi-res original NASA photo, little Dickie Hoaxland piddled his pud, here is where you look:

If using the original NASA photo (without rotating 90° CW), his manipulated image came from an area roughly mid-line horizontally, and about 1/6th down from the top.

It is easier though, to view the fraudulent area by rotating the original 90° CW, as Hoagland did for his image. In this case then, the manipulated area is again, roughly mid-line vertically, and about 1/6th of the width of the photo, from the right edge.

Remember, to see the fraud clearly, YOU MUST see it in hi-res; Youtube or my video attachment; I also recommend my Photoshop file, so you can view at any magnification, and manually turn on/turn off the layer, so as to vividly see the fraud.

Happy viewing.

So you're convinced Hoagie is the hoaxster and not just a gullible dupe ?

I wonder if he (and others of his ilk) have Munchausen Syndrome, which causes people to take a few grains of truth and conjure up ridiculous stories.  I once knew a guy who had the condition.  He was entertaining (like RCH) and fun to hang out with, but you knew he was full of shit.

astroguy

My blog got a fair number of hits from Above Top Secret where people were posting about this, and it appears that this isn't just a hoax from 2011, but one from 2003.  What an ass.

Munchausen is when people hurt themselves on purpose to get attention.
