Art Bell

Started by sillydog, April 07, 2008, 10:21:45 PM

I am 50 and have never used satellite radio but I went ahead and signed up tonight for the free 30 days of internet access listening.  They took my credit card info so I think they will begin billing me after my free trial is up.  The sound was great and came in much better than most streaming options.  In the 70s I never dreamed that I would pay to watch TV but the 80s arrived and so did cable.  I guess radio is just now going through the same expansion that TV did back then.

Apologies if this has already been reported, I haven't read everything here, but there seems to be some discussion of whether or not Art will be able to continue to say he's broadcasting from the high desert, etc.

If you've clicked on the colored letters at Artbell.com, and listened to some of the t.v. spots announcing his return, at least 2 of them are saying that a studio is being constructed at Art's home.  I think that's great news for his family.

Apparently, Art is popular everywhere. I am a member on Calguns.net. I started a thread about Art returning and the thread is now one and one half pages long.

Who would have thunk it? :o

Keith Rowland is asking for opinions on Art's FB page!!!

Keith Rowland:  I hope I can do a good job for the fans. The real website is almost complete and will launch REAL SOON NOW. Should I have another Progress bar???

I loved the news story links on artbell.com.  I do not think one of them mentioned that C2C is still on the air and is hosted by Dave.  It's like they all thought the show ceased to exist after Art left and in this conclusion, they were ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

Nooooo.  No progress bar.  It's murder for us obsessive compulsive types.

From Keith Rowland on Art's Facebook page:

Quote from: Keith Rowland on Facebookthe site you see now is just a simple HTML page that was being used to run up to the announcement. The real website was being developed behind the scenes for several weeks. When the REAL site is launched, (REAL SOON NOW) it will contain more information about the show and will have the countdown timer. Currently it shows --- 47 Days, 19 Hours, 20 minutes!

Very cool that Keith is interacting with the fans on Art's FB page.  I'd call him Keithie Baby although I dunno if that's too familiar or not.   ;D

Wait,...C2C didn't cease to exist after Art left? Can't wait for the new ArtBell.com site to launch!

Maybe this time a count down? I remember that was a popular opinion before.

Someone didn't waste any time.

Is this the "official" site? Not Art's official site but perhaps the Indie Talk station that he is on? Or is this a fan who wants to cash in on Art's success?

I just decided to type it in and see what popped up. It might be official. I don't know! It already has 6 likes.  :o

Someone ask Art or Keith?

jazmunda

Firstly, hi Keith. Stop lurking and say hi.  ;)

Secondly, Keith re: artbell.com website:

Quote from: Keith Rowland on FacebookIt's going to be quite a different experience on the web, it is very different that 10 years ago. We all do things differently, so I hope to offer enough variety of content and still keep the website streamlined and efficient, as it has to deliver pages to thousands of visitors each day. It will be simple but functional.

Keith re: Art's new studio:

Quote from: Keith Rowland on FacebookThe new studio has to have much more modern equipment than Art used 10 years ago. He'll be connected to the network via ISDN and will be playing his bumper music from his studio as before. Calls will come into the network and fed back to Art, but he will be clicking the buttons to take UNSCREENED callers live!!!! Yeah!

jazmunda

Keith re: clips on artbell.com

Quote from: Keith Rowland on FacebookI'll be posting "best of" clips from the show on the website. Should be some cool stuff!

Keith Rowland referring to linking bumper music suggested on CoastGab:

Quote
After awhile I ran out of letters, so I had to just stop.

We really were being listened to.

popple

I can hear the cries of joy from my fellow Canadians!

YES! YES! YES! NEVER SHALL A CALL BE SCREENED AGAIN!

KnyeGuy

"unscreened callers" -real interviews -actual personality... it's like we found a bloody time machine...Bring it on...

I am still frantically F5'ing ArtBell.com throughout the day & night.

Re:  issues with copyrights on bumper music between C2C and Dark Matter.

With the kind of money some people were throwing out there for Art's contract, he could afford his own in-house studio band and have witty repartee with the band director.

popple

Bonus points if he or she is Canadian.

Shh... not so loud. Don't want to spoil the theory that people over 50 are too stupid and/or stubborn to pay for radio and prefer Dave Noorie's kinder, gentler program.

And to address something I've seen a few times since the announcement -- this notion that Art Bell 'lifted' Dark Matter from Don Ecker and is riding his coattails... like, EVERYBODY knows who the fuck Don is, Art's a nobody, and Drudge, AP etc would've never covered Art's return had he not co-opted Don's singularly unique "brand".

Anyone that's spent time in the fiction/publishing world can cite examples where a story has been published in some no-name fanzine or indie rag, then a semi- or even wildly-popular writer comes along and publishes a story with the same/similar title in a visible publication, and the no-name writer and his 23 friends on twitter are crying foul. It's happened to me. It happens to most writers. Unless you're a self-aggrandizing twit, you take note of how people think alike, marvel at our cultural consciousness, wonder if you chose maybe too common of a phrase, whatever. But throw a tantrum? Please.

Unless it's some wholly unique creation like "Electric Fetal Centrifuge", titles that lean on common phrases, memes, ideas, play on words etc are not only bound to repeat, it's to be expected.

Somebody go yell at Metallica for lifting 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' from Hemingway, then head over to Hemingway's gravestone and mock him posthumously for lifting it from a 17th century poem. Then have fun hunting down the hundreds if not thousands of other examples soaked into our cultural fabric.

PEOPLE -- Don Ecker did not give a revelatory TED speech introducing the world to the concept of DARK MATTER. He's not a promethean figure that descended from Mt. Olympus and gave DARK MATTER to us plebes. Scientists, drunks, creative types, and even radio hosts have been batting it around for quite some time now.

lonevoice

Meh.

I want Art Bell to install a mobile broadcast studio in his RV.  Then I want him to park it in my driveway and broadcast from there to make sure I get good reception.  I want him to change the name of the show to  'Art Bell's Gray Matter for Lonevoice'.  I want final approval of all guests and I want to choose the bumper music.  I want Art to do all the commercial voiceovers, but only 3 minutes per hour, and only for products I'm considering buying and interested in his opinion about.  I want every show to have the Lonevoice Only call-in line.  I want Keith to install a fast blast app on Art's computer that's for my personal use alone.  Speaking of Keith, I want him to make house calls to be certain all my internet devices have the latest software and firmware upgrades installed at all times.  I want Art to guarantee me that his ratings will smash, that C2C will die, and that his closing words every night will be "Dave Noorie Sucks."   I want Art to have a forum attached to his website, and when you click on the hyperlink it goes to BellGab.com, where all prospective new members require my permission to join.  If anyone harshes my buzz, I will ban them.

Finally, if, and only if, all of my conditions are met, I will allow Art to pay for my lifetime subscription to SiriusXM because there's no way I'm going to pay to listen to radio.
