Art Bell

Ravel's Bolero keeps running through my mind.

Phil Hendrie has a podcast.  It lasts about an hour and will have bumpers and breaks throught the show. It is a Podcast. Not on the Radio at all.  It's all music from today and some old stuff.  If he can do it then I bet Art can too.

Please Art, you can do it.

That's why I hurriedly logged in and posted.  Somebody has to follow up.  I'm at work and not able to do so myself.

Posted this in a separate thread...  Figured a few more people may see it here:

If he actually wants to do a show - which with all the flip flopping - who knows.

I'd suggest that he looks into working with Podcast One.  http://podcastone.com/

The company is making huge moves in the genre, with many heavy-hitters (biggest show is Adam Carolla, among many others).

They, not random business advisors, might be the right people to talk to about how he can manage.

Again, Carolla for example, has a daily radio show, through the site, and his own.

Anyway, if anybody wants to suggest they look into Art, you can do so here:  http://podcastone.com/contactus (select topic "New Show Suggestions".)   If enough of us throw it out there, maybe, just maybe, they'll reach out to him.

Managing this all on his own is probably a mistake.  This would cover all the legalities and other business that he is struggling with over the supposed July return.

I think if enough of us reached out and suggested to a network like Podcast One, they would likely explore working with Art.   Additionally, they could take the lead on dealing with certain modern issues that Art is encountering.

Or Bud Dickman, or even Bobbie Dooley.

Art:

You can broadcast your show from your home studio and still run LIVE in KNYE using the bumper music. Rebroadcast the show music-free on the DMRN.

Does KNYE still run Coast to Coast? Hopefully they don't have an ongoing contract to do so. I'm sure Karen would rather have you on KNYE than CTC. The advertising revenue would have to be better with your new show.

I listen to the DMRN on TuneIn and I see that KNYE streams for free there also. The reception has been flawless.

If you need to miss a show because of your health then just run a repeat/best of show. It won't take long to build up a library of your own new shows.

If KNYE doesn't work out there will be other options. Please consider giving up some things like minimal commercial time in order to off set the cost of the show/bumper music.

Other thoughts:

I don't think I'm alone here: I would pay $20-25 a month for a subscription. C'mon everyone, that's (just over) $1.00 per show. I think that's money well spent on a new Art Bell show.

Here's the simple version of how music licensing works...
Thanks for the clear explanation.

Art- I'm not in the business so I can't comment on what can or cannot be done with bumper music. I can tell you what I've observed over the years and how I react to what was once Coast to Coast AM.

Moroder's The Chase used to set the tone for your intro so well- now it's like listening to music in the grocery store. I think it's partly due to the constant use for so many years and mostly due to your absence. I don't like it much anymore. The thunderclap is just an add on now that wouldn't be missed at all. It was good in your day. Now, it's just a tired old relic of days long gone.

You had good bumper music when you were the host but the host is what makes or breaks this show. I can understand your attachment to the music but why let it get in the way? I'm old enough to remember the themes from old TV shows and movies- they are iconic and have passed the test of time and are as great as they were then. Think Mission Impossible, Hawaii 5-O, The Man From UNCLE, Star Trek, The Odd Couple, and all the great movie themes. They are still recognized decades later. Why not consider original music? I'm sure there are talented people who would jump at the chance.

Just my 2 cents. I wish you well in whatever you decide.

Art:

Why not contact Agnetha, Frida, Björn, and Benny to record NEW songs for your show. I'm sure they would do it. They haven't worked in years!  ;)

To Everyone else. :

Art's bumper music IS a big part of the show. I'm sure it also provides Art a comfort zone. Sort of working with old and trusted friend. Hopefully this will be worked out. Don't give up!

Maybe new music created for the show will be the answer. I still say we should all contact the members of ABBA to write and record songs for the show.  8)

i get what you're saying, but nobody is going to pay $25 per month for this.

Especially if I'm not confident in how long the show will continue once it gets going.

I hear you, MV. The show would get pirarted anyway. Most would take the free ride unfortunately.

Still, if you divide up your entertainment dollars in your budget I know I would find a way to subscribe. That's $1.00 for three hours of Art Bell entertainment.  Find some advertisers and bring that fee down to $15.00.

The 'free' show without bumper music would air on the Dark Matter Radio Network. Those of us who want the music would have to subscribe.

I'm sure that Keith could block the bumper music and still broadcast LIVE on the DMRN while the show simultaneously runs LIVE on KNYE.

a 15-25 dollar price tag is less shocking when the math is broken down, but people even balk at paying $15 for satellite radio with 200-plus channels of content.

Wait...wait...wait...wait.....

I have a solution that will help to overcome this relatively minor setback...

Art there is nothing stopping you from playing your favorite music when you're not on the air.

You can play anything you want to in your studio in the background for your personal consumption.

You can play anything you want to for free as long as you are not playing your favs on air for your audience.

In the meantime you can browse "Royalty Free" music sites to see what's out there. Who knows, you might find a tune or two that you like; and you think that your audience might like if you play it on air. You might even do it when you have open lines. People can call in and rate the new, and "Royalty Free" music that you decide to play on air.

Ya know, I wouldn't be surprised if you start receiving demo tapes from bands all over the place. You can then play the music you like on air and throw out the music you don't like.

I use to subscribe to Dr. Demento who plays demented music.  ::)  He doesn't offer downloads but you can stream all of his shows for $12-$15 a month from his website.  He does a new weekly two hour show which is always enjoyable. I don't know how many subscribers he has but streaming music like this can be done. He's been doing this for years.

I think many of the small podcasters out there today are playing copyrighted music without paying any fees.  Most stay under the radar, are unlikely to get caught.  An experienced well-known host like Art Bell has more to lose, and I think he's wise to cover his bases.  In radio a lot goes on outside the knowledge of the FCC, and fines are often imposed after a complaint--say by a jealous rival--to the FCC.

Yes, but THIS is Art Bell!  ;)

jazmunda

Anyone know why Coast have to strip the music from the downloads of shows but those same episodes can be restreamed over and over from their website with the music attached?

I understand the not downloading with music and I understand that they can live stream with music but how can they restream old shows with music?

or worse , the RIAA ,who would be very happy to bankrupt art bell. why? they have no problems bankrupting others, even if the person didnt pirate anything, or are on welfare, 80 years old, etc. the RIAA comprises of companies with the sole agenda of becoming richer, irregardless of who they stomp upon.

Art could not do this because I'm sure George would be on the phone the very next morning to whatever authority controls this tattle telling on Art.

Jazmunda--I have to ask the obvious question...Are you to blame?

All this is just too much.  Does it really take an army of well-meaning bellgabbers to get a friggin podcast off the ground?

Art, I really really hope you get a show going this summer.  I still believe there's hope it will happen.  Great bumper music is cool, but it's not a dealbreaker for me and many others.  Whatever the show, however it's distributed, I'll listen and support it anyway I can.

If it's not meant to be, then that's ok too - thanks for all the awesome shows over the years.
