Jorch, I woke up the other night just long enough to hear Tommy play "Once Upon a Time," the Tony Bennett version.  It's really a great oldie, done by a master.  However, if you want to up your game, try the Bobby Darin version at least once.  Pure emotion.

The musical arrangement was splendid.  I notice in Sinatra's music, the background arrangement compliments his voice perfectly.

I'm very glad you enjoyed it!  Just a wonderful rendition.  You can hear his voice break with emotion.

Poor Bobby had wrestled with poor health all his life, after suffering from bouts of rheumatic fever, and then heart problems as a side effect.  The little delay to catch his breath at the start of this masterpiece was obviously due to his declining health.

He was married to the first Gidget, Sandra Lee, and then divorced.  This performance no doubt reflected his thoughts of her and better days. 

Bobby Darin passed away at the age of 37, after a failed surgical attempt to repair his accumulating heart damage.

Norry did a decent job interviewing Dan Rather, and though he mentioned Navy etc he didn't boast as much about himself as I predicted. Some name dropping but more in the line of "people we know in common" and not so much aggrandizing. And clearly for someone in the industry interview such a big guy can be expected to be a bit of fawning. So credit where credit is due. Rather also was game to take callers. I like that he was going fishin tomorrow and gave some 'shout outs' to some small towns near me, so needed to get some sleep and ended the interview.

I agree It was a decent interview. Was it as good as a certain career caller, the caller I refer to as 'the president of the Georgie sNoory fan club' made it out to be? No, but not bad. You can hear Dan is up there in years, as it was reflected by a few brief missteps in his speech. For a guy approaching 85 years young he's still sharp and has his finger on the pulse of America, unlike that other guy who boasts that he does. Rather said sNoory had "insight," so bad mustache should accept it as a compliment from a veteran newsman, who was a real boots on the ground hard-nosed reporter that tussled with some very, very nasty people (one was sNoory's body double or vice-versa). It's unfortunate to realize from this interview how sNoory's ever-expanding ego will overshadow his inability to remain humble.

What I found to be extremely distasteful occurred when Rather was giving his opinion on how returning Vietnam vets were badly greeted, saying they didn't deserve the hostility and treatment, but the government that sent them there against their will did. Rather had barely started offering his opinion when sNoory rudely stole Dan's thunder to go on a rant, with the exact same message that Dan had been giving. There are times sNoory should shut his big yap because only then could he thoughtfully listen.

There's an English singer who had an amazing voice, Matt Monro, and who did a beautiful rendition of this song. It's on y/t. Under the right circumstances, it could shatter your heart into a thousand pieces. Because Bloom worked for/with Prince, and many other musicians and bands. So, yeah, it would make sense to ask him about the Prince situation. (Although I'm already sick of all the Prince talk everywhere.)

Yeah, I love Sammy.  I've read maybe three books about him.  He died with hardly a cent to his name, but it seems as though he made some bad choices early on.  You know how Sinatra was heavily promoted by the mob?  Well, he was one of their own, a good Sicilian boy. Sinatra tried to promote Sammy by introducing him to his hood friends.  They helped Sammy but in return he had to employ their financial guy who funneled every cent Sammy had into ventures that went badly for Davis.  Sammy chose the only way of living that was left open for him, which was buying everything on credit.  The financial guy made sure the bills were paid, that no laws were broken.  So he lived life on the cuff.  Sad.

Darin was a great talent.  Shame it ended so soon.

Sorry, I haven't read any books on Bobby.  I've just enjoyed his singing.  I have Kevin Spacey's movie, "Beyond the Sea," on my "to see list."  It gets mixed reviews but Spacey is a big admirer of Darin.

Sinatra, Bennett, Munro, all superb performers, of course, but the heart-felt emotion Darin put in to his songs, such as "Once Upon a Time," is just beyond compare.

So true.  So much music today seems like so much noise.  I call it factory music because thats what it sounds like to me - as though I am walking through a factory with the machines trying to pound out a headache.
