I'll respond to this when I'm done with my ab workout.

In all seriousness, when a guy mentions "abs", he's probably a hairdresser in a florist shop. Very fruity.

And the sub-class of that group, the uber-fit who think their obsession is a mark of moral superiority.

While the trains ran late. The third rail has never been so enticing.

"I helped (us) out of a jam I guess, but I used a little too much force"

Speaking of which, I realize it's a Dylan song and all, but the vignette about the dancer who took him home and read to him from a book "written by an Italian poet, from the 13th CEN-tur-EEEEEEE" makes me tear my hair out. Look, everybody who's had a stripper take 'em home to read Dante to 'em by firelight, hold up your hand.

Her Stripper name was "Fuzzy Bumpkin." You got a problem with her?

I am annoyed by posters who open a new topic and spell the title incorrectly. A random example would be "What the Hek is Art Bell Doing?"

I'm very annoyed.

Why the hel do you keep going on about this?

          Bow ties.

On white people it makes them look like a pedophile, or even worse, an economist.

On black people it makes them look like they should be holding a copy of "The Final Call" waiting for the Mother Wheel.

How about a SPINNING bow tie.  There's a guy who sells them (forget his name).

...Sound-level anomaly between tv programs and the commercials. Just what the hell kind of perversity/ineptitude/arrogance is it that permits this? Were I paying gazillions to advertise my products, I think I would realize that it tend to piss people off when ads for my product abruptly blast them from the comfort of their Barcaloungers.

It seems a problem that could be fixed, at least coordinated, by the sponsors, the ad producers/sellers, the networks or the FCC. So I can only assume the blaring-commercial problem must be perceived by these entities as a benefit to them. HOW?!?!

Of course, this is one of the great benefits to the DVR, which to this day gives me giggles to use as the sponsor's disgusting ads go by unseen. And unheard.

Then how could you hear the ads in the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, or outside?

the fact that 90% of the recent horror movies are all shot through the perspective of some camera obsessed character... ya know to give it that "reality" feel.  sick of it.

Crap, just horror movies of late. Actually any "scary" movie of the last twenty years. Because they just aren't scary. The last movie that even slightly gave me the creeps was arachnophobia. Today the only response I have is a mixture of boredom and disappointment.

The world of "comedy". That worthless turds ranging from Larry the Cable Guy to Wanda Sykes to Dane Cook make one red cent at all makes me laugh...that's only way they can make me laugh. American comedy is tragedy.

Dane Cook is an asshole.  My daughter went to a technical high school in Alaska, and her concentration was journalism.  She was really interested in the comedy scene and became acquainted with Lewis Black, Kevin James, Dane Cook,  Patrice O'Neal, Jim Norton, Rich Vos, and Colin Quinn.  She was actually able to do several interviews with these comedians, even having several published on a NYC comedy site.  Colin Quinn would call her on occasion just to chat. He was great and a huge inspiration for her.  Dane Cook was on her IM list back then.  They'd chat about comedy and whatever.  Eventually, he started sending her bizarre rants and being a real ass.  She cut him off her IM and never talked to him again.  This was back in 2004 or so.

He's a "superstar", ya know. Actually, what you're saying is in line with what I've heard about him for a long time, going back to when he was playing Chinese restaurants/rathole comedy clubs on Boston's North Shore in the mid 90's. An opening act who demanded equal time as the headliner(s). He was a plague upon Boston-area radio back then, too. That was the only redeeming factor of his success...that he became scarce around these parts.

Dane Cook is a creep. I've never understood his success.

I get annoyed when parents and teachers tell kids, "You can be anything you want to be.  You just have to try hard enough, and it will happen."   I call BS on that.  When I was a kid (and even now), I wanted to be a pilot with the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, or my third choice was the Canadian Snowbirds lol.  As a girl with 20/400 vision, that wasn't going to happen, no matter how hard I tried.

I think it's lazy parenting and teaching.  We should be encouraging kids to pursue things based on their strengths, not some pie-in-the-sky notion that everyone can be everything.

My youngest sister has cerebral palsy and some mental retardation with a speech impediment.  She can't carry a tune.  I'm not being cruel, just honest.  This didn't stop one of her high school teachers from telling her that she could be the next "American Idol," because "she could do anything if she tried hard enough. "  This, in turn, convinced my sister she had the promise of being a great singer.  When anyone would try to steer her in a different way, she would bring up that teacher's declaration.

The same thing happened when she tried college.  She didn't know what she wanted to do, so some career counselor told her she'd be great in media and broadcasting.  Seriously?  Her writing level is approximately 3rd grade.  She has a speech impediment and can be difficult to understand, but this career counselor told her it was the perfect career for her.  Needless to say, she dropped out before the first semester ended and probably won't be returning to college due to her bad experience.  I tried to encourage her to take a different route, but she was already disillusioned.

This whole notion that anyone can achieve anything is just crap.  Based on that, scientists  haven't cured cancer, the common cold, or Alzheimer's just because they didn't try hard enough.  If someone just tried hard enough, everything would be cured.  It pisses me off.

I'm glad you're all behind me; you can be my flight crew. But with my eyes, I'm afraid my first flight would be my last.  :o  I'd still love to go on a fly along one day.  In the meantime, I'll stick to photographing them.  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v186/ILoveKewpies/ThunderbirdFairchild2010.jpg

Larry (Dan) has a house not too far from me. My brother made a wrong turn once next to the house, and Larry had his buddy chase him down the road. he annoys the hell out of me, everything about him is fake, and he will do anything for a paycheck. hes now a prilosec otc sponsor because he 'loves america" whatever the hell thats supposed to mean. Any millionaire comedian who claims they are "blue collar" annoys me.

That commercial ironically gives me horrific heartburn. Actually, it was "Larry's" commercial followed by a Wanda Sykes commercial(for God knows what) that prompted this original post. Again, it's my fault for exposing myself to these horrors by actually watching TV.

I forget who it was(possibly Joe Rogan) who did a riff on the "real" Larry the Cable Guy some years ago, and how the accent is fake, well everything about him is fake. And what you say about "blue collar" millionaire comedians is so true. Comics working in dives or titty bars may have a slight claim to that status...but millionaires? No fucking way.

You make a compelling case. Now, I generally like happy people; I think it's important to be optimistic and to help others to be optimistic. But not to make happy talk just for the exercise of doing so. I think it's just as wrong to fill people with obviously unfulfillable hopes as it is to crush someone's ability to dream of accomplishing more than they thought possible. There is a difference.

I think it's because of misplaced sympathy. And done maybe a little for their own sense of righteousness, because they get to feel good about how much they've "helped" someone. Of course I don't mean every person who encourages, or even over-encourages others. But some indeed do it for how it makes them feel. These are the ones who over-encourage thoughtlessly. They pump up someone like your sister with dreams of accomplishing things which are clearly beyond her capacities, and aren't considering the consequences of that "encouragement". They don't want to take the time and mental effort to really consider the person's situation and come up with a specific way to encourage them.

So they give a pro forma, preset, one-size-fits-all, fly-to-the-stars load of happy horseshit. Call them the "drive-by do-gooders", because they dip in for a few seconds; dispense a few pre-fabricated words of what they think is soul-lifting help; and then fly out again to bring joy and help to someone else.

They would have done better to have said nothing at all, instead of setting someone up to fail. But instead they do it so they can feel good about how they "helped" a deaf and blind girl by encouraging her in her dream to be an airline pilot, or a boy with uncontrollable grand mal seizures who wants to be a brain surgeon.

Sometimes doing good takes real effort and thought. And getting involved.

I think you're right.  I had chalked it up to laziness, but I see where you're coming from.  I'm within 3 classes of my degree in human services, and I've seen that mentality too much already.  So many people get into the helping careers to make themselves feel better, not to truly help others.

And I agree that there's a happy medium in there somewhere.  We need to encourage others without giving them false hope and impossible goals.

Juan

Corporate management that makes stupid decisions, then the employees suffer for it.  The small company I worked for had a mass firing this morning - 10 of the 25 people who worked there.  Reason given - sales are down, which they are.  Except, of course, no one in the sales department was fired.  The management produced a new product that did not sell, and, at the same time, neglected the core business.

Oh, well, maybe Obama will send me a check.

Some of us have to do it, as we're fat asses and it's the only healthy way of losing weight. Also, if you're of a certain age, and you aren't staying highly active, you're in for some serious medical problems.

A public high school that Coyle had the misfortune of being in hosted a 6'10" Boston Celtic who told the assembly "you can do anything you want to do...with hard work".

Physiology was never mentioned. For some strange reason Coyle thinks it may have helped him in his chosen profession.
