sorry I have to change the topic here to vent.
these annoying NFL play-by-play commentators who are calling the football a "rock".
its been going on for a couple years now, but I just heard the ESPN MNF guys saying,
"he's running with the rock!" or "He took the rock for a big gain!"

come on man!
where did this come from?
did they play with a large rock before they invented the pig skin football.
It just sounds stupid and forced.
like they are trying to sound cool...
Stop it already!
I guess I'm just cranky tonight.

thank you, please continue.......
blame black people... they call basketballs rocks too although I don't think any honkey common taters have latched onto that yet. give it time.  Oh and calling a ball a rock actually originated with basketball... thats where I first heard it many years ago.

Sardondi

It comes from back in the day when nobody had nothin'. We had to play with rocks: rock balls, rock bats, rock gloves, rock shoes, rock caps. "Hit the showers?" Are you kidding me? We didn't have water - Coach just peed on us to get the dust off.

You are a funny man. Well done!!

Hey maybe the rock reference is from Bedrock. The mythical town that had rock houses and rock wheeled cars that they propelled with their feet. Fred and Barney played "rockball"

I'm sure coast could find an "expert" to come on and blab about the lost civilization of the Flintstones.

"The football player on the New York 'Football' Giants football team is running the football down the sideline of the football field hoping he can carry that football all the way into the endzone and score the football."

Maybe some genius down at ESPN HQ suggested it might be a good idea to mix it up a little once in awhile.  Not realising it's still the same dumb announcers.

Michael Irvin breaks into a cold sweat when "rock" is mentioned.

"Don't mention that shit if you muthafuckas ain't got any!!!"

Inevitably followed by the lamer and more synthetic "Aldo November."

Ah, very good. That station would be a "Fantasy". Not enough recognition for pint-sized Billy Squier imitators from Quebec who inspired Bon Jovi.

I actually went to one of his shows back in the day.  It was BOC, Aldo Nova, and Dio.  Up in Alaska, a triple bill like that didn't come around very often.

Nova co-wrote one of the last really good songs of BOC,IMO called "Take Me Away" back in '83.

However, he landed on a permanent shitlist for me when I discovered that he was listed as a co-producer on a Celine Dion album. Canadian unity, my ass! I don't see Neil Peart drumming for her. I don't see,uh,...well I'm flat out of Canadian musicians who'd be above playing with her, but my point is made.

I love Take Me Away.  Celine Dion?  Wow, he lost all credibility with that move.  :o   The video for Take Me Away is pure '80's cheese.  But in a good way.

"Take Me Away" got some MTV airplay in late '83/early '84. That was basically the last year of "free form" MTV where acts like BOC could get some airplay, before it embraced the "superstars" format in 1985.

Celine Dion is bad enough...but Aldo also wrote a song for Clay Aiken. I'm afraid to look further.

My favorite Mac & Cheese box says "press here to open" and I always wind up with a crushed unopened box.

You can't blame the guy for wanting to keep working after his career as an act was clearly over by 1989.  At least he didn't try to become a rapper.

If I had the slightest bit of photoshop ability I'd have a picture of Aldo Nova with a backwards hat in front of a turntable standing next to one of the various Ices or Doctors of the rap scene. But since I'm barely able to turn this "typewriter-television" thing on, I'll have to put it in the hands of others...

Whoever creates that masterpiece, make sure you get Aldo wearing his leopard-print jumpsuit.  8)

That Michael Savage wants me to cough up 5 bucks just to watch his "virgin" Internet broadcast.  He ought to be worried about losing his audience at this point.  This isn't 2001; broadcasting over the Internet isn't exactly groundbreaking.

The only person who got a victory last week was him, and that remains to be seen in the long run. His listeners got the shiv. Not that he ever gave shit.

Newly found family members annoy me.  My twin sister and I just recently, over the past two years, discovered our dad's side of the family.  We had never met my dad.  It turns out he has been dead since 1979, struck by lightning on the Texas oilfields.  We found we have an aunt and four cousins; two cousins by this aunt, and two more from a deceased aunt.  The one aunt and two cousins live right here, less than 20 miles from me.  I've met with my aunt and one cousin and they're good.  I really have a lot in common with with my aunt and we talk often.

I have another cousin in Kansas.  She's crazy as a fucking jaybird.  Every time I post something online that's political or sociological in nature, she flips out and claims it's about her.  These would be things that I could not possibly know about her.  Yet she continues to claim that what I write about is all about her.  So I've come to the conclusion that I really don't want a relationship with her.  You kind of expect to have something in common with family members, but we have nothing in common.  She's ignorant, vile, narcissistic, and not the kind of person I'd spend time with in real life.  I'd always wanted to know more about my dad and his side of the family, but other than finding my aunt and learning more about my dad's Vietnam experience, it's been rather disappointing.

There's something going on with her.  Her mother committed suicide and was possibly bipolar, so there's some pathology in the family.  I tried to be understanding and friendly with her, but all I get in return are accusations and smart ass remarks.

ziznak

paranoid schizophrenic... I had a friend whose mom had gone over that edge.  I would at times try to talk with her since my friend and his sister had long given up.  I would be over the house stoned and to me at the time it was something amusing to do.

I remember one particular conversation where she explained that all of the cars that are parked on the block overnight are there watching her... for some reason the fact that the cars were only there at night reinforced the fact that indeed they were watching her.  She was unable to grasp the fact that maybe these cars were there at night because most of the people that drove them were at work during the day.

HorrorRetro

I don't think it's that severe.  I think her issues are narcissism and maybe borderline personality disorder.  She recently sent my aunt a seriously vile e-mail regarding the purchase of a grave marker for my aunt's mom, which would have been our grandmother.  What should have been a family disagreement over a few thousand dollars was turned into a freakfest with her wishing my aunt dead and calling her a filthy whore and a ruthless bitch.  My aunt had been civil toward her until then, so there was no reason for her level of hate.

She's not paranoid in the classic sense.  She's just extremely self-centered.  We're at the opposite ends of the political spectrum, so when I discuss something regarding liberalism, she immediately claims it's about her.   She is also constantly posting photos of herself.  I can see teenagers doing that, but she's in her mid-30s with 3 kids.

Blah.  I guess you can't pick your blood family.  You have your biological family you're born into and your logical family you choose on your own.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder may be the most maddening to deal with(first hand knowledge) because you're not dealing with a rational person. Like you say, they're not paranoid schizos, but goddamn it can feel like it. The persecution complex combined with passive aggressive behaviors was something I have to encounter frequently and it's come to a point where I say nothing anymore-let my silence say all that's necessary. And me keeping my big Irish yap shut is a major accomplishment, but I have to do it. My patience is gone.

Unfortunately, this strain infects my biological and logical families...

Yes, the passive aggressiveness is a huge part of this issue.  She'll say something clearly about me (jeez, now I sound like her), and I'll ask her about it, and she'll deny it.  Later, she will admit it.  I was going to explain to her why I didn't desire any more contact, but I think silence is probably the best way to go.  If I tell her what I really think of her, she'll just use it as another martyr experience and, boy, does she know how to play the martyr.  ::)

Pardon my butting in, there is no way for you to come out of this with a healthy relationship. Your only recourse is to completely disengage. In families that are in close proximity that is difficult. Most family dynamics are not a single spotlight of dysfunction. So I am guessing others are engaging her in conversation which most likely lets her continue her behaviors. It sucks and there is nothing you can do to effectively change her behavior positively. Good luck.

I completely relate and the martyr complex is what makes it unbearable. I've nicknamed one of them, "Joan of Arc" because it's always the same, "the world is against me, because they are jealous of(whatever suits her need).." and it never ends. I agree with Onan about reducing contact to it's barest minimum if possible.

As my family have noted, the cold shoulder from me, the big mouth could be the loudest possible demonstration of the collective irritation at her behavior. Which will never change. She's approaching her fourth decade and progress is increasingly unlikely.

HorrorRetro

Yep, I think you're both right.  I made an honest attempt to know her and develop a relationship, but it's not in my best interest.  It had gotten to a point where I could physically feel my blood pressure rising when she'd respond to something I'd said.  I will be cutting off contact with her.
