Hey thanks!!  Yeah, I did check the place at night, several times actually, at all hours.  Amazingly, it was always pin-drop quiet.  I thank the gods when there is a quiet moment, but it never lasts for long.

Funny, my apartment in the 'hood was quieter than this, even with the gun shots & mysterious couch-beating neighbors.  At least I could work.  Here, I have to take my calls in the tiny hall closet.

I've read some real nightmare apartment stories, and feel better.  But, damn, is this ever annoying.  I'm hoping the leaky bathtub is grounds to break the lease.  I hope.

In truth, I am homesick for NorCal and the redwoods.  There's no place like Home.

Ahh ..daughter went to humboldt in arcata ca . The times i visited it was super nice ( for a college town)
Northern cali is beautiful ..i can see being homesick

So very.  But, hey, there's a million little things I can do to cheer up & keep on keepin on.  Guess I just had to "get it off my chest".

Who lets their kid go outside and scream his/her head off in the parking lot for hours?  I don't get it.   ???

Some  people simply have no consideration and are totally oblivious to others around them. Noisy neighbors are the worst. Especially the people who have dogs that bark at all hours of the day and night. When one points out the fact that their dog is a noise problem, they act like the complainant is the asshole.  I can sympathize with your annoyances redacted. I hope it gets better for you.

Ha haa.  I'd go anywhere in this country for quiet.

Your need for quiet totally resonates with me.  I crave it.  I need it to work, to relax, to think, to sleep.  Sometimes I feel like a different species when I see how some others don't seem much bothered by noise and have very little regard for their own noise pollution output.

One thing good about renting, is at least it's easier to get away than if you own the place, which happened to both my mom & bro who both independently got stuck with super-noisy loser neighbors, and it took them years before they were able to get out of their respective situations.

Anyway hope you find some solace.  One reco I'd have for you in the short term is to get/make some white noise mp3's and blast one through a good set of headphones when you really need to shut everything out but the outside world is not cooperating.  (They have saved some measure of my sanity on many occasions.)  One cheap way is to get the free open source tool Audacity which let's you generate your own white noise.  You can get it off cnet or sourceforge.

Yes on the white noise.

I'm using the kitchen exhaust fan right now.  Drowns out most of it.  And I am smoking by it too... hope the smoke just goes up and away and doesn't bother anyone.  Oh well if  it does, I'm a nervous wreck and need a smoke!  Wish I could work with the fan on, but it's very loud.

It's my day off, so, I'm going to listen to alot of Om Mani Padmi Hum, ocean waves, and such as I plan my way out of this.  Sucks, but, it could always be worse, right?   :-\

I can't imagine being stuck with loud neighbors like your mom and brother, yet not be able to move away from the noise.

It was pretty rough.  Some of us find incessant noise more than bothersome - it's actually psychically painful.  Ironically, they eventually had to move back to the city to find some peace, each moving into planned communities that have some strict rules about noise.

See out in the boonies, there were basically no noise ordinances at all so there was nothing we could do.  We had no recourse if these jackasses wanted to shoot off shotguns at midnight or blast their stereos all day or start full-blown dog kennels or keep wild tropical birds that screamed whenever the wind changed direction, etc.

Anyway hang in there you'll find something better in time I'm sure.

I love animals, but dogs that bark constantly are the worst

This is absurd. It is stupid cold.

The worst thing is, it's is stupid cold out here too, and this lady leaves her dog out all night in it.  Poor thing is whimpering, howling, and crying to be let in.  Also, I can hear him (or her) nosing the empty food bowl around too... and it breaks my heart.  It's a little tiny patio for a full-size dog, it's not right.  She should be taking him for daily walks.

There's also a little, probably one-year old kitten that someone else is leaving out at night.  Little guy wants to live with me so bad.  (My kitty is big, healthy, and will kick his butt if I let him in here, though)

How can people treat their animals this way?  Why have them?

Yeah it is.  For the first night since October, I got a full night's sleep.  With the exhaust fan on, so, it was a little strange, feels like I am sleeping in a parked plane or something.

I was thinking I would go out to the boonies to find quiet, but you just changed my mind.

Oh, hey, here's something that annoys me:  stupid damn threads that become nothing more than a ridiculous embarrassment to anyone who posts on them.  Actually, I think such threads are kind of rare now that CasioSon is not posting video surveillance feeds of laundromats, but the General Musings thread is fifteen kinds of crazy now.  Posting dozens of stupid images and insults reveals a lot more about the poster than it does the intended victim.

Is that what this is A51, just a bunch of happy people riffing off each other?  Well, then I guess my comedy-gold detector is busted.  To me, it seems like a major load of immaturity and horseshit.  I don't see a couple people posting anywhere but there.  I am done with it.  I'm not about to stomp off and go home, but honestly... I think I know why Sardondi lost interest in this place.

It all depends on your neighbors, unless you move so far out that you don't have any.   :)

I remember once seeing this guy interviewed, who was like a volunteer ranger of sorts out in some remote part of Death Valley.  He lived in a little camper out there all year round and would give tours and info to the few tourists that came through.  They asked him, how he deals with the summers that reach upwards of 120 degrees.  He said those were actually his favorite times, since there were no people at all then and he could just enjoy the quiet stillness of the desert.  The older I get, the less crazy he seems.

Sardondi et all were and are free to pay attention to the threads they choose.  It's not like anyone is making anyone read the Falkie thread.  If people don't like it then they shouldn't bother clicking to read.  That thread shouldn't keep you from enjoying other parts of the forum.   I have a high insanity tolerance and sometimes I have to keep the crazy going to feel normal.   Today, I just want to watch the world burn.  Tomorrow?  Meh.

Yeah but they do. And honestly if you are defending the bullshit in the musings thread... shame on you.

area51drone

I'm not defending some of the vicious attacks on Falkie.  He's crazy in his own right, but as I said, he's harmless and doesn't need to be attacked beyond a simple good natured jab.   I'm defending the right to just be carefree and make stupid conversation that has no point.   Some members of this forum seem to think that only intelligent thoughtful conversation should take place here.    My claim is that the only one who has any say in that is MV, and that sometimes stupid conversations are fun.

I certainly don't want Falkie to leave.   Without Casioson, Falkie is the closest thing I have to a constant great time on here.

MV/Liberace!

I would like Falkie to have psychiatric help. He's treated by some a bit like the village idiot who doesn't know it. The guy is so unaware of what he's said or not said, he lives in a 'now' mindset. He 'thinks' it entirely reasonable to say publically the most personal, intimate and some downright embarrassing aspects of his life. Someone who does that and rolls on like a bull in a china shop deluded they're going to be a national broadcaster NEEDS help. Seriously.

He has to be enjoying all this attention at some level, otherwise he wouldn't insist on remaining in the spotlight.

Oh I agree; but I think that enjoyment is a form of torture to him. It's masochistic. He (I'm guessing here) knows what he's doing can't possibly be taken seriously on any level, and on some just pathos.

Well, first, Tarbaby is right - Falkie can/will read this, but that is the way it is.  Yorkie, you are bang-on correct here.  Someone on the Gabcast said it, too, about Falkie being the developmentally disabled kid who keeps getting beat up on the bus.  Ducks in a barrel...  It's amusing to some apparently, but there is a point when it just becomes sad and brutal.

YES, Falkie keeps supplying ammunition.  Yes, he is weirdly, wildly eccentric.  He also looks to be an aging person in questionable health.  He is an easy target.  Not much honor in roughing him up IMO.

One can realize intellectually that they are being ostracized (in an electronic medium) but ignore it in favor of other subliminal needs. If the sense of belonging to the community (or any connunity for that matter) is stronger than the sense of ostracism.  Thus they would still protest the perceived meanness, still persis/remain, and still persevere in the quest for social acceptance, recognition and camaraderie. It strikes me as a derivative example of the the human indomitable struggle for survival.

Or, in simple terms, one fights. One persists. To make a place in the world we are thrust into given the genetic hand we are dealt.

I try to counter my George jabs with warmth, love, compassion and gentle encouragement. I try to counter my JBW jabs with proclamations of lust.

George is a seasoned public figure who understands that with celebrity comes both public adoration and disapproval. The pain some people try to inflict here is at least countered by hundreds of adoring housewives and Whoopi Goldberg showering him with compliments and affection all day.

Falkie . . . has not yet reached that level in his career as a public figure.

All that aside, I like to think we take care of our own over here, particularly when outsiders come in and try to turn the place upside-down with chaos and assholishness. But maybe that's idealistic thinking. Regardless, I don't want people to swing by here and get the impression that Art Bell fans are a bunch of trollish assholes in general. When I'm an asshole, I at least try to be focused and thoughtful about its direction. I don't spread it all around like George's Asian-Flavored Butter for the hell of it.
