The best parallel I can give you to Trump's DC hotel is the story of another hotel, the Helmsley Palace in NY.  This was the pet project of another rich real estate developer, Harry Helmsley, who had a wife who was famously a very "nasty woman." Like Trump's hotel, it was a nice renovation of a historic building, except with a prime location.

When Leona's reputation went in the toilet, so did the fortunes of this hotel. As you can read in the excerpt below from Wikipedia, it was eventually sold and relaunched without the Helmsley name.

New York, incidentally, is an even bigger international city and business center than DC and this didn't save the Helmsley Palace. People just didn't want to stay in Leona's hotel. They knew who she was, just the way people know who Trump is.

"The Helmsley Palace Hotel opened in 1981 and was operated by Helmsley until 1992, when the hotel came under the management of a private New York limited partnership owned by the family of Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei, changing its name to The New York Palace.[1]

During Helmsley's ownership Harry's wife Leona Helmsley maintained a strict and intolerant management style which involved her firing staff members for trivial mistakes, an act which gave her the nickname, "Queen of Mean." The hotel reverted to its bond holders from Leona Helmsley and was ultimately purchased by the Sultan of Brunei with the concurrence of the US Bankruptcy Court. The Sultan of Brunei, through its development company, Amedeo Limited, hired Lee Jablin of Harman Jablin Architects for the complete renovation of the hotel and Villard Houses."

Yes, I'm familiar with the story. Remember it well. But you are neglecting one important aspect. Everyone hated Helmsley. Contrary to what you seem to believe, not everyone hates Trump. In fact, about half the people love him. Actually, maybe 25% hate him and 25% love him with everyone else not really giving a good crap one way or the other when it comes to selecting a hotel. And that's just the Americans. DC, like NYC, is an international city. The foreigners are apt to not care either as long as it suits their needs. Btw, I'm very familiar with NYC also. Both are major but also very different in their own ways. DC is a bit stranger though. All the locals seem to care about, outside of work and their social lives, is the traffic.

Right, now we're back to my original point, which is that the people who can afford to stay in Trump's DC hotel, the uber-rich who can pay $800 a night, are not big Trump supporters. The rich dislike Trump for much the same reasons they disliked Leona. This includes rich business people and rich foreigners.

Look at Trump's rallies. These are the new potential customers who would gladly pay for his services, post election. Just not $800 a night. $200 maybe.

Now we're back to you not knowing what you're talking about.

Go price DC hotels. Oh, this one had rooms just up from $400. Hate to tell you this but that's normal for the level. You'll see they are charging about the going rate for it's level. They all do. DC hotels are all expensive. Well, not the sleezy ones on the outskirts of NY Ave and other less preferred areas. It's not about the rich, except that they can afford them and the rest of us scurry around looking for deals or staying a bit further away. I work in travel and tourism so I do know what I'm talking about. Also, I use to live not all that far from DC and would hang out there a lot. Got you on that point also.

Yep, you are correct. Except not EVERYONE hated Helmsley, sorta of like Marge Schott or the Queen's Consort Philip Mountbatten. I enjoyed/enjoy their thoughts about "little people" and various minorities. And leaving wealth for dogs etc! So many lawyers made money. She was before her time. It was/are hilarious! The out of touch, condescension, casual racism, etc is a beautiful, hilarious thing.

I'll try one more time. Even where everything else is equal, including price, Trump's hotel is now at a competitive disadvantage with its target demographic simply because of Trump's bad image with that group of people. He has to cut room rates in order to attract other types of customers. That appears to be what's happening.

This is all just basic marketing. I don't even understand why you would argue the point. His pricing reflects the demand, or lack thereof, for his available rooms. 50% off rack is a very substantial discount.

Yep. And everyone of the hotels in the DC area have a block of rooms available at GSA rates for government employees and contractors.

I was born in DC. And still confounded and make remarks on occasion, when websites and ESPECIALLY government agencies and their sites or minions want to know what STATE I was born in! I wasn't IDIOT. Learn some history. I say this even to my detriment by various "patriot" etc quasi-legal theories. HAHA.

Bad image? Ha!!! To you. Like I said, you are totally neglecting that there's millions of people who either like him or just don't dislike him like you. One person. Okay, there are more but not enough to hurt his business that much. Believe me, when tourists and business people are looking for a DC room, the majority will not turn it down because it's a Trump room if that's what works best for them. In fact, now that he's become much more in the public eye, it will attract more than it will deter. Look outside yourself. Look at his rallies and the thousands who show up all over the country. His hotels have a good reputation. The only reason the Atlantic City resort went bust was because the whole damned city went to hell. That's it. Whether he wins or loses, his only problem will be the shills from the Aggressive left who couldn't afford a proper DC hotel in the first place.

Hope you don't play the stock market because you seem to place your own personal feelings in front of what sells. That's fine for you but that's not necessarily what pulls in the bucks.

Btw, I work with a few people who are not Trump supporters whose faces light up at the possibility of staying at a Trump hotel. I say this because I've often heard them talk about doing so. Not everyone thinks like you.

As long as the Trump campaign is paying inflated prices for lodging and other services at various Trump properties, he's not likely worrying about what the common folk can afford. But I expect to see deeper discounts for his properties after November 8th.

Donald Trump’s campaign may not be winning the presidential race, but it did a fine job this month of providing business to his hotels.Trump’s new hotel in Washington received $13,432, according to new Federal Election Commission filings late Thursday. His hotel in New York City received $18,014. And his hotel in Las Vegas was paid $79,044...
Trump held a “grand opening” ribbon-cutting ceremony there on Wednesday that was far more elaborate. Its costs, though, do not have to be disclosed until the FEC filing that’s due a full month after the Nov. 8 election.
Trump’s campaign further paid $8,544 to his golf resort in Potomac Falls, Virginia, and $6,040 to his son Eric Trump’s winery in Charlottesville, Virginia.
These payments were on top of his monthly rental payments of $9,000 to the Trump Plaza and $169,758 to Trump Tower. The Trump Tower rent jumped fivefold in July over what it had been for most of the campaign, even though the number of employees working there has no more than doubled...
But Trump so far in October has contributed zero cash to his effort ― only $31,000 of “in-kind” contributions in rent and payroll, meaning office space and staff he was already paying for, but which now is being used for campaign purposes.
Trump has claimed he’ll wind up spending $100 million of his own money on his race. But so far, the actual total is only $56 million, according to the FEC filings. To hit $100 million, Trump would have to spend $44 million in the remaining days before the election.

And compare which hotels they are, seasons, types of rooms and areas. Keep in mind, you're throwing in all levels. Trump's is high end. It is average for it's level. It's completely disengenuious to compare the Willard (similiar to Trump) to the Radisson (I think that dump is still a Radisson) up on NY Ave NE near the outskirts of town.

Hell, during the summer, some of the hotels where I live charge that and even higher per night for rooms not as nice. It's all about supply and demand. Over-priced? Yes. But they are getting the rates. DC is even crazier. Just go try to book yourself a nice vacation in DC at a high end hotel like the new Trump or the Willard. Maybe the Hay Adams.

Yes, a Trump loss would cut off his campaign revenues just for starters. Then, after the blame game among Republicans commences, the discounts should increase even more as fingers point at one obvious culprit -- with resulting loss of business.

Trump supporters may then be encouraged to give to the "Save Donald Trump" fund. He's one of a kind and therefore will be an endangered species.

Elvis Costello (Declan McManus) wrote about The Trump Thing 30 years ago.

He thought he was the King of America
Where they pour Coca Cola just like vintage wine
Now I try hard not to become hysterical
But I'm not sure if I am laughing or crying
I wish that I could push a button
And talk in the past and not the present tense
And watch this hurtin' feeling disappear
Like it was common sense
It was a fine idea at the time
Now it's a brilliant mistake

He thought he was the King of America
But it was just a boulevard of broken dreams

And about many in the media in the same song:
She said that she was working for the ABC News
It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use

I'll sometimes watch a show on MSNBC called Morning Joe. I only watch when I feel like agitating myself because it truly is one of the most obvious Clinton propaganda shows out there and Joe has a face that I think people just inherently want to punch. What I didn't know is that the blathering apologist sitting beside him is none of than Mika Brzezinski, Zbigniew Brzezinski's daughter. For those of you that don't know who he is he's the guy who initially dreamed up this policy to use Muslim fundamentalists as a weapon against Russia (and maybe to steer domestic policy here at home but we won't tell them about that  ;)) back in the Carter administration. The man is truly a demented maniac and here sits his daughter trying to steer the thinking of American women. It really couldn't be more Orwellian.  :D
