Economics: Theory Through Applications, v. 1.0 (2 Volume Set)

Chapter 4
Everyday Decisions

You and Your Choices

Economics is about you. It is about how you make choices. It is about how you interact with other people. It is about the work you do and how you spend your leisure time. It is about the money you have in your pocket and how you choose to spend it. Because economics is about your choices plus everyone else’s, this is where we begin. As far as your own life is concerned, you are the most important economic decision maker of all. So we begin with questions you answer every day:

What will I do with my money?
What will I do with my time?
Economists don’t presume to tell you what you should do with your time and money. Rather, studying economics can help you better understand your own choices and make better decisions as a consequence. Economics provides guidelines about how to make smart choices. Our goal is that after you understand the material in this chapter, you will think differently about your everyday decisions.

Decisions about spending money and time have a key feature in common: scarcity. You have more or less unlimited desires for things you might buy and ways that you might spend your time. But the time and the money available to you are limited. You don’t have enough money to buy everything you would like to own, and you don’t have enough time to do everything you would like to do.

Because both time and money are scarce, whenever you want more of one thing, you must accept that you will have less of something else. If you buy another game for your Xbox, then you can’t spend that money on chocolate bars or movies. If you spend an hour playing that game, then that hour cannot be spent studying or sleeping. Scarcity tells us that everything has a cost. The study of decision making in this chapter is built around this tension. Resources such as time and money are limited even though desires are essentially limitless.

Now do you understand why I asked that question?

That was destroying him? The Trump Thing got in a decent line at the end but at the cost of continuing to expose itself as the whiny loser
it is.

Guess you didn't take the time to read any of the links. That's fine. I never really expect that any of my commentary will change any opinions.

Pink lemonade is my favorite.

That's a bit hypocritical don't you think?

“Crimestop means the faculty of stopping short, as though by instinct, at the threshold of any dangerous thought. It includes the power of not grasping analogies, of failing to perceive logical errors, of misunderstanding the simplest arguments if they are inimical to Ingsoc, and of being bored or repelled by any train of thought which is capable of leading in a heretical direction. Crimestop, in short, means protective stupidity.” --Orwell

Says the guy who supports a political party in which many want "free," , single-payer, universal healthcare, "free," or at least heavily subsidized, education, EBT/SNAP, and "free" housing and 3 squares a day in school, funds for everyone and a completely open border so that anyone from any other country-  regardless of motivation, wealth, skills, education, health, or criminal background- can waltz over and get the "free" stuff and vote.

He is Canadian. He is irrelevant. As long as we pay to protect Canada against the evils of the world, he is happy. I believe his biggest fear is that Trump will tear up NAFTA.

Your contention about open borders is ridiculous.

As to the rest, every other advanced Western Industrial nation offers these things and doesn't seem to have enormous problems doing so.  I can discuss/debate with you the aggregate and marginal benefits and costs of these things with you at another time.

Only easily frightened Contards like you worry about the evils of the world and needing to increase an already bloated defense budget in order to pay for it.

I think we should open the RRs and IH-35 to illegals, "refugees," and the immigrants and let them travel through the US into Canada since the people there are so open and willing. Monitoring with drones, troops, ATVs, and horses ensuring that they don't jump off somewhere into our country, of course.

Yeah, the open borders thing is really working in Europe, and here. Canada has vast resources, natural and otherwise, why don't you take all our illegals and all of those "refugees" and give them "free" stuff? Show us how it is done.

We should have just annexed Canada during the Pig War. We may still do it if a Canadian team ever makes it back into the Stanley Cup finals.

Don't piss us off or you get Justin Bieber back.

BTW - is Michael J. Fox still under warranty?

That would be a good use of the NAFTA highways.

Bloated defense budget?  Are you fucking serious?  We have hollowed out our military.  The size of our navy has been reduced to 1916 levels.  Our nuclear arsenal needs to be modernized.  What the fuck are you talking about?

You could always have Pig War II if The Trump Thing gets elected.

He is trying to teach us about scarcity whilst advocating "free" stuff for every citizen with an open border to all and sundry to waltz across to take advantage of the "free" stuff. Apparently further cuts into the military budget will be able to pay for "free" healthcare, education, food, and shelter for our citizens- and anyone else who wants to come here.

I'm a little surprised that there wasn't a police presence since I thought that street is relatively busy and also considering the volatile election and the criminality of the left and Hillary adherents. But they were probably busy chasing down some illegal alien or "youth" who robbed someone or was fleeing a DUI accident. Or told to "stand down" by city officials.

It's really not working anymore and will just make you look like a wingnut in the end.  ;)

Mostly for anyone else who wants to come here.  As for citizens,  the government seems to take its attitude toward them from 18th century France.  Let them eat cake.

I've seen some people in papers already almost advocating for it, or at least excusing it, and I could almost see besides maybe polygamy that pedophila will be the next sexual push (at least to post-puberty though it wouldn't surprise me if some want it straight-up legal with no age limits.) It is logical, using leftist logic. After all 'if they are born that way,' 'who is to judge the age at which,' 'different cultures, who are we to judge,' and their usual tripe.
