The House speaker, Paul Ryan, called Assange “a sycophant for Russia” on a conservative radio show and GOP Senator Tom Cotton told MSNBC that he had “a lot more faith in our intelligence officers serving around the world … than I do in people like Julian Assange”.

The comments followed tweets from Trump on Wednesday morning in which he approvingly repeated Assange’s claim that the Russian state was not the source of the hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign chairman, John Podesta, published by WikiLeaks during the election.


An intelligence community review of the evidence is expected to be delivered to Obama on Thursday and will form the basis for a briefing for Trump from top intelligence officials on Friday. Meanwhile, hearings begin on Russian cyber-attacks on Thursday in the Senate Armed Services Committee, chaired by John McCain, a Republican with hardline views on Russia.

McCain called the alleged Russian cyber-attacks “an act of war” on Wednesday.

“I’m not saying it’s an atomic attack,” he said. “I’m just saying that when you attack a nation’s fundamental structure, which they are doing, then it’s an act of war.”


“The ‘Intelligence’ briefing on so-called ‘Russian hacking’ was delayed until Friday, perhaps more time needed to build a case. Very strange!” he said on Twitter.

In response, intelligence officials briefed correspondents that the plan had always been for the Russian briefing to take place on Friday, and referred to his remarks as “adversarial”.

Back in 2010, with the Wikileaks, Chelsea Manning thing; the Republicans wanted the arrest and imprisonment of Assange. (Presumably in the USA). Now that Donny is effectively favouring what Assange says over the intelligence services (because Assange is saying what Trump wants to hear), does ths cause potential conflict with the Republicans who still want Assange arrested, convicted and imprisoned?

I thought leakers were patriots.  That must be only when what they are leaking is damaging to the United States.

I also thought it was the various intelligence agencies - here in the US, Israel, Europe, etc - that were wrong about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.  Although apparently Bush should have ignored all that and relied on a lone voice or two out there who were saying otherwise.  Oh wait.

Well it should play out like any other time in history when we've replaced something with something else. If it doesn't, then we have a bigger problem on our hands than electing Donald Trump as you would have us believe, or basically anything else. The United States should not be ruled by the CIA.

Assange at least isn't - he's simply an Australian hiding from Sweden in the Ecuadorian Embassy in the United Kingdom (next door to Harrods). He'll probably get arrested now even if the Swedish kerfuffle goes away as he has ignored a British court order. Add to that he didn't win any friends in the Australian govt by leaking about them too, and they already had a history of doing nothing for citizens in trouble overseas.
