All the report said was "recently".  The store simply "No".  It would be doubly ironic if this was the same place that sold him the rifle.

Maybe he intended to throw the body armour instead of loading the firearm with ammunition? Do a lot of damage with Kevlar.

It was not an automatic weapon either. Learn the difference if you want to be taken seriously.

Jesus, it's academic. They're still fucking dead.

If the government treated Radical Islam like organized crime, this shit would have been already stamped out.

Look how long it took to bring the mob down tho

That's one of the big advantages of being into necrophilia - you don't have to worry about temptation any more.

Ah, so that's what you're into. It's all starting to make sense now, as does your absence from the Gabcast.  :P

It's really an inconsequential point in the context of one man shooting over a hundred in a minutes.

I'm not disagreeing with you but the government went insane trying to take down organized crime rackets with RICO and all sorts of rather intense laws and investigation. Considering how aggressive the government has been with organized crime and religious cults in the past, it seems odd their main response is to shrug their shoulders when it comes to Islam.

Oh, bless me, I called it a machine gun and not an automatic weapon.. Damn! The victims might have thought the same I guess. "Hey, you can't kill us with that machine gun".."You're right, it isn't a machine gun"..Phew.

Actually, it was semi-automatic. In the gun debate, people get crazy when weapons are described inaccurately. It's a big part of the debate, since gun laws have to be written in very specific terms.

I believe what GS is objecting to is the sensationalism you're trying to affix to an already bad story by claiming this guy had automatic weapons when he didn't. The argument about what difference does it make they're dead is silly considering saying 50 people killed with an assault rifle and 50 people were killed with a clown hammer are two different conversations.

Not when you consider the size of the checks written by this guy and his cousins...

Not inconsequential. If the rifle had been full auto, he could have killed two or three hundred in the same amount of time. There's a reason machine guns are illegal, with rare exceptions.

It most certainly was not.  If you can't see politics as a rational discourse to solve problems, you belong with the reprehensible hacks on both sides whose only concern is the equivalent of the old "is it good for the Jews?"

I don't see how preventing body armour sales will stop mass murder. Hey, I'm just surmising that the body armour isn't the overiding consideration when someone goes on such a spree.

Two or three hundred fuck why stop there why not 6 million? People conveniently forget how much ammo weighs and how hard it is to carry hundreds of rounds on you even with mag pouches.

Possibly true. But in the context of this thread, it's inconsequential.

Almost Godwins law...keep going.

Hillary is also calling for a ban on gun sales to people who are on the no-fly list.  That might sound reasonable, however, there has never been an explanation as to how someone is put on the no fly list - and there is no appeal once you are on it.  Senator Ted Kennedy, of all people, was put on it.

This is all a denial of basic due process which requires notice, a hearing and an appeal.

So you see no irony in a system where a person can be denied armor but not an (almost) assault rifle.  Is the cynicism cumpulsive them?

Actually, it was semi-automatic. In the gun debate, people get crazy when weapons are described inaccurately. It's a big part of the debate, since gun laws have to be written in very specific terms.

There is no question that semi automatic rifles such as the AR15, the SKS, and the AK47 are deadly weapons, and when coupled with large capacity magazines are capable of killing and injuring a lot of people.

There is a reason that these are not the weapon of choice for most "mass shootings". They are hard to conceal.

A Glock pistol can be fired as quickly as any one of these "assault" weapons, and if the person is really determined, and is carrying extra magazines in mag pouches, practiced in tactical reloading, they could reload and kill just as many people, just as quickly.

In almost everyone of these terroristic type attacks, there have been red flags before the shooting occurs. Someone posted a link or a stat that 2.4 million people have been denied buying a firearm since the Brady Bill was passed. This means that 2.4 million people lied on the form they filled out when they tried to buy the weapon. Do you know how many of these denials were followed up with an investigation by the ATF?  Less than .1%.

It doesn't do any good having laws if you are not going to enforce them, and it doesn't do any good standing up at a press conference and saying "They have been on our radar".

Would it have been more acceptable if he had just gone in with box cutters and slit the throats of 20-30 people before he was finally tackled and taken out?  Not for those 20-30 people.

The way things are going, and as terrible as it is to contemplate, I'm surprised this hasn't happened in a non-Japanese metro, yet.

You're being deliberately obtuse.  If his history was sufficient to deny him body armor, it might also have denied him a weapon.  But that's not nearly as important as the potential for his purchase to attract new attention from investigators.  One visit from an old-fashioned planted informant might have tipped his hand.  Worth more than all the fancy gear and gravely sonorous top officials in the world.

I call this 'The argument from Bruce Willis'. Yes, there is a possibility it might work. But, as I said, a totally open situation where everyone has access to the same gear means that you will also have to factor in that there will be people in the mix who are up to no good. In that situation you would be very unwise to ever leave the house without a weapon - whether walking the dog, taking the kids to school, or even out in the yard watering the lawn. I don't think the odds are in your favour, that's all, but for many people a part of their thinking has been paralysed where they find even the thought of it an assault on their liberty rather than a practical measure to prevent tragedy.

I live just outside the city limits of Kennesaw, GA where it is the law that every one must own a gun. Crime is much lower here than in other towns in suburban Atlanta.  Nobody wants to mess with anybody from Kennesaw.  The law has been in place since '83 and no one has shot up the town yet so I don't see much validity in your argument.

Ifs and buts, and pots and pans.. Roughly what do you think the chances are of a Muslim women being beaten by her Muslim husband being taken seriously might be? There were over 350 mass shootings in the USA in 2015, Mass shootings mean more than four killed or injured. Yeah, a Muslim wife is really going to go to the cops about her deranged husband. She was later rescued by her family. It didn't stop him getting access to a machine gun though. No problem, nothing to see.

Would you like to see where most of the mass shootings in 2015 occurred?

Chicago, Illinois. You know, the city with the toughest gun laws in the country. Where you can't buy a gun or ammo in the city limits, and it is illegal to carry one. 2996 people killed or wounded. Outlawing guns does not seem to work in Chicago.

This is an interesting graphic. It doesn't show the 1 case in Alaska, but it appears the primary cause for mass shootings is I-95. We need to do background checks before people can drive on I-95.
