Perhaps.  We're all looking to make a living. I'd donate to SETI though before paying an individual hawking proprietary secrets. 

Maybe we're trying too hard to make contact.  If the ETs are far beyond our capabilities, as we often imagine, they could easily contact us if they wanted to.

If you run something like SETI, you end up developing specialized technology to "solve" your problem. Does any of this technology have some kind of secondary use or value on the open market? For example does the tech SETI develops actually make good satellite-detection technology? Or radio-interception technology? Could I miniaturize SETI technology and make really good hand radios to listen to Art Bell with?
What happens to this technology-is it moth-balled or shared with other astronomy groups?
