The Kurdish Peshmerga was suppose to defend them but they retreated when Daesh was doing their rampage last year(that brought the United States into bombing Daesh). The YPG/YPJ/PKK fought through Daesh territory to create a corridor of safety to Rojava. Some refused to ever leave Sinjar, but the YPG has been training their own defense forces. Some have also joined YPG and YPJ forces.
