I may be a bit positively biased towards space and sci-fi so I'll have to give it a rating of 7.5
Worth seeing. Nothing really mind blowing happens that you probably don't see coming.
But I think it holds the pace nicely so that you are entertained enough to enjoy the ride.

Not nearly as good as say Interstellar or Contact. I found the comedic moments in The Martian a bit over-dramatized and cheesy.

I saw it the 2nd week or so since it was out.  I thought it was enjoyable, a good afternoon. But like many if not most around here I had already read the serial/book. It was a pretty fair movie adaptation, but seemed a little choppy at the end, like they didn't know what to do with the story. I guess it would have been not very cinematic to have a guy sitting on a bench reminiscing

Just finished The Ridiculous 6 (2015)  on Netflix



Despite my long-standing aversion to Adam Sandler I decided to give it a try. Lots of big names and recognizable faces in it.  It wasn't too bad, it spoofed a lot of movie and TV scenes...it was a just  goofball of a silly movie

Eschewing the traditional New Years programming last nite, I caught instead The Foreigner (2003).  The cable guide blurb caught my attention as it literally said "Lame action thriller starring Stephen Seagal ...."  I had to watch this thing - I needed to know.

This movie is .. it's bad.  It also doesn't seem to even make sense at certain points.  However all of that is irrelevant to it's Seagalesque sensibilities.  See you've got your awesome slo-mo explosions, curious kung fu fisticuffs, and cavalier quips exchanged between various shadowy figures.  I noticed there is a sequel as well, which I look forward to for all the wrong reasons.

Saw Hateful Eight yesterday. My wife liked it. I under liked it. Lots of blood, all of it ends up on Jennifer Jason Leigh. Perhaps that will be funny to me sometime soon.

I did like the acting. I did like seeing Walton Coggins and Samuel Jackson chew up the scenery.

I actually thought Hateful Eight was terrible as well.  Don't know if you would use the word terrible, but nonetheless I couldn't believe I was watching an actual Tarantino movie.

The dialogue was atrocious.

The personality of the characters were simple and one-dimension.

The actions of the characters were befuddling.

I have always looked forward to a Tarantino movie, and this is just was so weak.

I feel as though the film existed for no other reason. Also, I am certain that the filmmaking process was negatively impacted by the theft of the script. Maybe his heart wasn't in it quite the same way this time.

Take Shelter - A guy having apocalyptic visions builds a bunker for his family. Things are open to interpretation, but it's worthwhile and it sticks with you for a few days. The trailer gives too much away.

Saw 'Spotlight' (2015)

Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams


Absolutely brilliant. What a great film!  Stellar cast. It's raking in nominations for Critic's Choice Awards, SAG, Golden Globes. Considered one of the best films for 2015. So well done. This is a film I plan to own.

Excellent film with very disturbing subject matter based on a true story.

The only missing element perhaps was a possible relationship to "The Franklin Cover Up", however that would need to be a several part documentary and not a movie.

Hey there, Freyja. Wasn't it fantastic? Yep.. It is nearly impossible to keep a concise and rich rhythm for the length of a feature film. Can't stuff it with all the info as you would for a book or documentary series. A great challenge for the best of screenwriters (adapting of a true story) as have to consider 2, 3 hours at most for the film audience. Also, reaching many brackets of those wishing to enjoy a good film that's for everyone (not just those invested on details of the subject matter) Rewrites certainly are where the 'real work' is. What stays, what's eliminated for a full and balanced script. I think it was exceptionally mastered. Certainly enough to encourage individuals to explore further after the film. As would be the case with the investigative journalism genre.

And what a cast and ensemble was perfect. I may see it again!

Beasts Of No Nation : One of the best films I've seen this year. Leading in nominations for Indie Spirit Awards and Oscar buzz has begun.  This is a powerful and uncomfortable film that is so well done. Provocative and thought provoking. As I've read in other reviews, 'This is a film that I feel odd in recommending yet it as its very heartbreaking ... However,  this is a masterful work'

Five minutes into it, I knew 'Shit, this will hurt, I don't know if I can do this' (as my father recently passed on this Thanksgiving) Can I sit through a film so brutal? Somehow, through such great direction and performance, I couldn't pull myself away. Remarkable film.

Just saw the trailer for this. Looks excellent!!

GS if you are a fan of foreign film, I could recommend quite a few, however one of my favorites is Jean de Florette and the sequel Manon of the Spring.

It is a wonderful story starring a very young Gerard Depardieu ( Green Card) and Yves Montand.

It is one of my stand by favorites that I revisit every couple of years.

I have many of the ones I love on DVD too.

If you haven't, check out anything directed by Yimou Zhang. His films are outstanding.

My favorites ( and I haven't seen them all) are Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, Story of Qiu Ju.

Coggins was great in the movie, and was my favorite. That guy just has the face for westerns.

Last night I watched All Is Bright starring Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd. They play two Canadian criminals who go straight and sell Christmas trees/steal a piano in New York. While I liked Giamatti's performance (he's always great), the movie was dull and completely forgettable.
Also re-watched Django Unchained afterwards, and realized it's not nearly as good as I remembered. We get it Tarantino, you like blood and the N-word.
