Since Art's last two runs on radio ended with Halloween ghost programs, I say ixnay.

Minimal request while this fiasco is ensuing but I'd still love to hear it redone.

It's actually really difficult to swear every other word and make sense.

That's part of the genius of The Big Lewbowski!

I mean literally, every other word.

To a certain degree, but you have to look at body language as well. Normally people who swear profusely are animated in other ways. It's like listening to a dog barking; you just have to take tone and other contextual clues into account.

I'll admit that I don't know all the history and drama. I just listened to Art on the radio and loved his shows. When I heard he was coming to Sirius, I was thrilled, since I am already a subscriber anyway. After a few shows I realized how much I missed him on the radio, and it brought back many years of fond memories of driving through the darkness for work exploring the mysteries of the universe with a truly one of a kind host.

Then, just like that it was gone again. To me, that's all on Art. I truly think he has some self-destructive tendencies and acts in an impulsive manner. I also happen to fall into the camp that believes he realized that he didn't actually want to do this again full-time, and wanted to avoid looking like the bad guy.

Doesn't change the fact that I think he is an incredible broadcaster, but he is also a human being, and I think he makes some extremely hasty and ill advised decisions that unnecessarily cause drama (see this thread).

Sirius went after him because they wanted him. They built a studio in his house. They hyped his show (I even heard ads for it during Howard Stern's show). Then he quits 6 weeks in and makes them look like the bad guys. People act like Sirius fired him and now wants to conspire to keep him off the air. In my view he realized that the gig wasn't what he wanted (happens all the time) and found a way to make himself out to be the victim.

He didn't get enough calls but wants to do a podcast type show (which most people listen to on demand)? How does that make sense? Also, I listen to Sirius NFL radio a lot, and they have callers all day long.

As much as I love Art, I don't have a stupid button I can hit to make myself ignore the obvious.

Nailed that one right on the head. Art the victim, his first DM show set up another of his victim excuses.
Remember that Art first came after Reverse Speech Oates as a fraud. Art tried to diminish Oates' gig which threaten his source of income. When dealing in a world of wackos, it's not a wise move to give them reasons to seek revenge against you.... Opps I better go delete my F bomb last post

Not if you fucking paid me.  And, if we had a paranoia contest, my paranoia would put John's paranoia in the damn dirt, face down.

I'm the most paranoid person you've never met.

Yeah you looked paranoid when I was watching you lastnight. BTW those blue trousers don't suit you.

Well your post makes a lot of sense, it does however overlook some of the problems with today's widely accepted use of crude language and behavior in public places. For example, some beaches and campgrounds have now become places to avoid for families with children.

MV can set whatever standards he wants, it's up to us individually to decide whether we want to participate. If he was foolish enough to have a vote on acceptable language standards, I'm wise enough to know that cursing would be approved....

So like the old saying goes. Edit....
I think we agree on quite a lot.  I do not want to take my nieces to an amusement park or out for supper and be subjected to drunken rowdy people cursing and carrying on.  I also find some bumper stickers to be quite unnecessary (I have read some that are truly vulgar.)  However, when we are discussing this forum it was designed for 18+ like a bar and not for children like disneyland.

Overall, I usually do not find the language here to be objectionable (yes, there are some exceptions- including the post I made a few pages back.)  There are also some posts that I would consider cross the line of good taste (but again, who am I to decide that we should draw the line at what I consider to be in good taste or what I feel comfortable with?)  When I run across a post that I think is a little over the top I remind myself it is a unmoderated forum without rules concerning language and I am here by choice.

The forum is what people have made it; warts and all.  I enjoy the place and do not know if demanding that people be nicer, tone down the rhetoric or clean up their language is going to make it a better place to be or just drive the people whose company I have enjoyed over the last couple of years away (see, there is a selfish motive behind everything.)

Again, I am not arguing that there are places where people ought to behave better- only that this forum is not one of them.  This discussion started with an observation about his forum and the language on it rather than whether or not it is acceptable to sound as though you suffer from Tortures when you comment on the elephants at a zoo (or are in any crowded public area with a mixture of people.)

It  feels like it was  all a just a dream now...  :o

Yup... just read about "Beyond Dark Matter".

Oh well... so much for good news at the beginning of the week.

I think I'm going to move on now. Seriously, this sucks.

SciFiAuthor

I dunno if I'd put too much stock in Beyond Dark Matter. They say they're not affiliated with Art Bell or the Dark Matter program.

No.  Dark Matter IS NOT anti-BellGab.  In fact it's not anti-Any Forum.  I'm one of the people who found (coast) BellGab by Googling "George Noory Sucks."  A couple of times when a new member, or guest, tried to flame BellGab, I yanked them up by the short hairs, or I reported them and DM yanked them up by the short hairs.  At any rate, anyone flaming BellGab, or any forum.  Is warned to knock it off or they are banned.  End of story.  I've been a member here for nearly four years.  I love BellGab, and I love Dark Matter.  Cool members on both.

If someone flames BellGab they'll either shut their mouth or get kicked out.  If someone here accuses Dark Matter of being anti-BellGab, I will speak up and set the record straight.

Oh really? :o

Well I thought up the name, but as you all know I am not remotly Lawyer like so I have no idea.

                                                                                                                    Art

The lawyer(s) if in winning, will I'm sure have Dark Matter remain yours as part of the win/agreement.   Your show will still be called Dark Matter  ;)

Spooky Matter

P.S. Art, maybe you should make contact on a better thread.  I tried to start Fresh Start for Art but as typical here, scum infiltrated so that thread is over.  Why don't you just post on the Art Bell thread.  I wouldn't waste my time reading all this garbage but when I scan it I'd say the quit thread is just not the negativity I'd think you'd want to associate yourself with.

You can also start your own thread.  Updates from Art?  Whatever.  You will keep the name Dark Matter.  I don't see an issue.  Put it in your demands.

urbie88

What's the deal?  I'm a bit lost between the language/etiquette posts and everything.  What is the deal with Beyond Dark Matter?  Is SXM really trying to do another show about the paranormal without Art taking the show's name?

I wouldn't listen to snooron if you paid me to. Too painful.

Off topic....but did any of you see that post & pix of the hidden stairway in a house where someone was living behind the wall? Talk about creepy!

You mean this story?

Yeah, I lost sleep the other night thinking about that... creepy.

Has any one noticed that in only 2.5 weeks, this thread has now surpassed the "Art Bell/Art Bell Quits Coast" thread which took 5 and a half years to get to where it is today?

The Tattooed Generation doesn't have clue as to how they are limiting their opportunities, they may as well get tattooed on their foreheads "I'm An Idiot"

I disagree.  My daughter has several tattoos.  She has seen more of the world and has done more at age 26 than I have done or seen my entire life. She has been active duty US Coast Guard since she was 20.  She has been all over the world.  She is featured on many military websites, including this one -- she is second from the left in the Ray-bans. http://www.military.com/buddy-finder/  She's also featured in the Coast Guard Exchange (department stores) advertising.

She frequently goes to Cuba and Central/South America for her job, but it's also taken her to Canada and back up to Alaska. She's been to the Galapagos Islands for her job.  She has met so many different kinds of people and loves serving them. She's worked hurricane recovery missions.  She's won an award for saving a sailboat and its crew from when they lost their engine in San Francisco Bay.  Her job involves fire fighting and other damage control duties.  She wears the "baked potato" firefighting suit and stands next to the choppers when they are refueling a few feet off deck.

She now has the most adorable baby girl.  She is two classes away from completing college.

How have her tattoos limited her life choices?

shes a sailor. sailors are supposed to have tattoos.
in all siriusness, i once saw a dude with his face tattooed as a skull.

I'd be proud to have a daughter like yours, tattoos and all. What's that saying - never judge a person until you have walked two miles in his shoes? What's on the exterior doesn't count, it's what on the inside that does and I'll put kindness above being judgmental any day.

As fo MV being "foolish enough to put language to a vote" as someone posted, MV is not foolish about anything, this is the site he created, he set the rules and there are plenty of long term members like myself who are grateful for the freedom he allows, and the lack of heavy handed moderation.
