The KKK held a rally on the steps of the Michigan Capitol building not that many years ago. We spectators were kept 150 feet away by chain-link fencing and there were police snipers on the roofs. The KKK'ers were in full hooded uniform and included a couple of children and mostly just spewed the kind of nonsense you'd expect. I kind of felt sorry for them.

They are rather sad, pathetic people...  I feel rather sorry for even the younger (indoctrinated) members of the Westboro Baptist Church (those who protest the funerals of returning servicemen/women).  The adults in that church know well enough what they're doing, so I don't feel much sympathy for them.

Here in northern Cal back in the really late 70's/early 80's there was actually a "Dial a Nazi" phone number that was locally run.  You could call up and hear a short pre-recorded rant right out of the KKK handbook.  (I know Nazi's and the Klan are different entities, but they have many similar hates.)

It is sad and stupid.  Foolish child of the 60's that I am, I hoped that the Star Trek ideal would come to be -- that we'd "learn to overcome our differences" and explore the universe as part of the United Federation of Planets.  Now?  I'm pretty sure there will still be lunk-heads in the year 2525 (if man is still alive).

It's very easy for some demagogue to point to someone else and say 'you're where you are because those peole are doing well', or 'you'd have a job/ /better job / be paid more / be better off if weren't for them', etc

Oh, the guy behind that "Dial a Nazi" number I mentioned above?  He went to prison for shooting a young black man who was walking along the railroad tracks in a nearby town.  He and two of his henchmen decided it would be fun to "hunt some n-CLANG's".  Morons.

Yes, exactly.  But they have chosen to continue the tradition of perhaps the most vile organization in the history of America.  People who regularly lynched people for no real reason, who went out of their way to try to intimidate and threaten families by burning crosses in their front yards, that marched and chanted some of the worst garbage imaginable. 


It matters little what people think.  These folks can associate or disassociate with anyone they please - as long as they aren't discriminating in housing or employment, etc.  But keep it to yourself.


What does matter is how people act.  Anyone that goes out of their way to harass others, people they don't even know - for any reason - are trouble makers out looking for trouble.  And I think people out looking for trouble deserve what they get. Too bad he cops in Springfield are going to keep these dead-enders separated from what's coming.
