the Avatar thread

The General

I'm interested in why people choose the avatars they do.

One of my favorite posters of late is Mind Flayer Monk.  The guy always has some interesting things to say, and has an eye for detail and a knack for numbers.  I also really like his name.  I have no idea what it means, but the Mind part makes me think he's smart, the Flayer part makes me think that he's maybe a ninja, and the Monk part makes me think he likes jazz.  But that avatar?  C'mon, Monk, buddy.  You can do so much better.

The General

And that's where I come in.

So, Monk, buddy... please don't take this the wrong way.  I just want to help.  So, I've prepared some suggestions for your new avatar.

Do you like space?

The General

Maybe you like to party.  How about this candid shot from a rager that you threw?

The General

That doesn't float your boat?

Maybe you like animals.

I'm fond of bunnies, myself....

ziznak

and I thought I spent way too much time screwing with photoslop.
I'm stuck in what I call my "Grand theft Nooory" phase...
it started here...

and quickly went to

and my latest

and here's one previously unreleased

I'm still actively playing GTA and collecting screenshots for more future "Grand theft Noory" avatars.
I've always loved Mr Monk and his Avy... I have to respect his choice to not change his avy but I personally love finding a new Avatar myself...
here's a funny bunny pic I've had for a little while and just never got around to using for anything

b_dubb

my name is Brock. one of the many nicknames I have acquired over the years is 'Brockness Monster'. and my avatar is the Loch Ness Monster. get it?

<crickets> .... chirp chirp ... chirp chirp ... </crickets>

Juan

It needs Tommy as Biggie driving.

The General

While we're at it, my avatar just makes me laugh.  It's my idea of what General Johnson Jamison looks like.  If you don't know who General Johnson Jamison is, you haven't heard any of Phil Hendrie's  famous spoofs on Art Bell.  The General is the only guest 'Art' ever has on.   He's probably an amalgam of John Lear, Colonel Corso, and Richard Hoagland.  The avatar is perfect.  Dark clouds loom on the horizon, there is a paranoid look in the General's eyes.  His frozen expression soured from all the things he wishes he didn't know.  There's probably a protective layer of tin foil in his standard issue hat.  This is a man surrounded by an imagined conspiracy.

ziznak

Where did you get your "general" pic at anyways? He looks familiar... I'm currently trying to find a picture of Tom Danhoser in semi-profile for my lil masterpiece but he's not as easy to find as the "nozzle" and "SCHKYPE ME!" George.

I did however stumble upon a photobucket album filled with some classics from noorysucks.com... and now I'm side tracked laughing my ass off:

here's a few I liked::>

It's from a video game I've never played and never heard of.  I think it was called "The General's Lair."

never heard of that one... sure it wasn't just "Generals?"  that was the last RTS from C&C... I was just playing red alert 2 last week.  Great games... I can't find "the generals lair" through google though... well not the game I think you were initially referring to.

Oh dear ... scroll down for this one.  Just a warning yall it's a little disgusting...

ewwwwwwwwwwwww

this might be one of the better threads i've seen in a while.

i'm not sure there's any scientific process behind how i choose an avatar.  i just tend to get bored with what i'm using and select something else.  i generally try to pick something i think nobody else would use.

The General

I never change my avatar.  Every now and then, just to mix it up,  I flip the image so he's looking the other direction.  I like him facing the text, though... so it usually doesn't stay that way for long.

I like to live on the edge.

ziznak

Well here's my "grand theft Noory" driveby pic with Tommy driving... still looking for a better pic of him in more of a profile orientation but he's not as photographed as much the other two idiot's ya know... since they're "celebrities" and all.  I do like the silly face he's making though.  He kinda looks like he's all excited as snore-boy and douche nozzle are about to start shooting their little bullshit gats... a picture is worth a thousand words and this one's metaphor seems very appropriate.

It's a great representation of General Johnson Jamison.  I can see him scanning the horizon just before he descends into his bunker deep below the Saskatchewan Crust.

I really miss Phil doing C2C.

No kidding. His last attempt(that I'm aware of) was about a year ago, and didn't go well. The premise was the General singing "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone". It really went nowhere fast, Phil bailed on it mid-segment. Then Phil mentioned how people always ask for the C2C send up, but it's hard to do with no Art around anymore.

has phil's show gotten better overall though?  i know when he returned to radio it was a stink fest, and even when he went back to the old format, the few times i tuned in, it was like watching a puppy die.

Phil's show is beyond awful now. The characters suck(especially new ones), he's lost any motivation. The show has lost affilates left and right. His fan forum has dwindled down to about 10, and I think half of them are mults.

that sucks to hear, but at the same time, as a fan, i kinda feel like phil can blow me after having watched how he's attacked the fans who've tried to support him.

example one here.

example two here.

i've never seen a media personality who harbors more hatred toward his fans than phil hendrie.  he's a sack of shit.

HorrorRetro

I think Phil's show has gotten better over the past few months.  It was awful awhile back; I wouldn't listen to it.  However, it seems like he's getting back on track to a certain degree.  It'll never be as good as it once was.   If Art came back, it wouldn't be as great as the glory years in the mid-90's either.  But, given the alternatives, I'll take Phil most nights.

coaster

I made my avatar while listening to dick and george bicker back and forth on coast. They remind me of an old married couple.

ziznak

Yours and danDNA's Avy's caught my eye the first time I found CG a few months back... good stuff

coaster... what cracks me up every time i see your avatar is george's closed eyes.  looks as though he's really immersed in the moment.

classic.

I think Phil is, well was, a creative genius, and at his best, one of the funniest people on radio. But his treatment of fans is absolutely absymal. A greed that would make Gene Simmons and Lars Ulrich cringe. The nanosecond something of his appears on YouTube it's DEFCON 1 and his minions go on the attack. And to his fan form admins, he has more threats of legal action than a commercial break during Jerry Springer. Whatta jerk.

that's one bit of credit i'll give noory.  not once has premiere threatened legal action over the things people say here.  the only time i've heard from them in a legal capacity was when they complained about users posting their shitty shows here (which is why i had to specifically amend the terms of service to forbid the attaching of full shows).

analog kid

There was a post on ye old forum from George himself, where he threatened legal action for slander, was there not?

I recently read something about this on another monstrous anti-Noory thread... he had tried to come out with some sort of command presence. Apparently if you lack the ability to speak well it can also have an effect on your prose as well.  He hasn't been seen in a forum since...  I'd love to have him post here... I'm also farting around with the idea of schkyping him during the show lol...

I've been undecided on avatars lately...but the current one is NOT a picture of me and the missus.
It's Rosalynn Carter meeting John Wayne Gacy in May, 1978. Within 7 months he'd be famous, too. Not long before this picture was snapped she was photographed with Reverend Jim Jones...who'd also become quite famous in late '78 albeit posthumously.
Gacy in this picture looks like 80% of the baseball and hockey coaches of my childhood. Looks like it was snapped at one of those godammned end of season banquets.
