"The subscriber model is the essence of what’s good about capitalism"

Ya, Fabulous (if your too-young to know any better and are thus necessarily Katy Perry Gay)!  Have you tried buying any software lately? Every jive-ass piece of shareware on the planet is now $99 per year (subscription based), internet keyed, x num of installs, on x num of your personal machines, on and on.

Sorry sweetie but you stepped in that one. Access-to-tools is equally important if not more imporant than access-to-information per say. What you and you-all have just accomplished in the last few years and are promoting here above [The Subscription Model of Capitalism] is perhaps THE sickest and most farsight-less thing to have happened to the future of creative human-kind in the last 20 yrs that could be imagined -- and that's saying a lot, given the long list of contributing and competing contenders for that distinct honor, aka disgrace, masquerading as an "idea".

There are many creative ways to find free wifi...then you could listen to Art even if you didn't have an internet subscription... 8)  If you are lucky enough to live in the 20 markets of the terrestrial broadcast, that is free too! Well, assuming you have a radio...

You do understand that I'm using this excuse to comment/rant on the over-all and now all-pervasiveness of the practice or option become (now) manditory/obligatory/default and forevermore, as-in henceforth and for all eternity.

But, gee... you only pay if you want to. Its not that hard to harvest the show for free in digital form if you want to do that.

I take the opposite position, why should it be free? Seriously ! It takes a lot of work on the part of many people to produce the show. People should pay. However, Art is being magnanimous and is giving it to us, with the OPTION to pay.

The OP to my comment, Cronaut, fancies himself to be a deep-thinker. For this sentance;
> "The subscriber model is the essence of what’s good about capitalism"<
to have passed his/her lips without ringing "odd" to his/her own ears, and at this particular moment in history, makes me question the consciousness or access-to-coffee of that author.

Gerald Celente, publisher of the Trends Journal and a pioneer trend strategist, founded the Trends Research Institute in 1980. He is the author of the national bestseller Trends 2000 and Trend Tracking: Far Better than Megatrends (Warner Books).  For more than three decades, Celente has built his reputation as a fearless teller of the truth, an accurate forecaster and an analyst whose expertise crosses many arenas, from economics to politics, from health to science, and more.  Most important, Celente is a pure political atheist. Unencumbered by political dogma, rigid ideology or conventional wisdom, Celente â€" whose motto is “think for yourself” â€" observes and analyzes the current events forming future trends, seeing them for what they are â€" not as what he’d like them to be.

, Celente â€" whose motto is “think for yourself”

Cool and thanks!... no need to listen to this guy's trendy advice tonight.

Jesus.  Ever hear about "context?"  We're talking about the difference between the commercial radio model versus the subscriber model of Art's new show, not the entirety of the international economic system, lol.  Now that we have that straight - I think that the current subscriber model for the show is perfect:  the listeners who opt to pay provide the financial support for the show, rather than a slew of abrasive advertisers.  Everyone -even You- have the delectable option to hear the show for free if you can't afford to pay *and* you don't have to listen to 20 minutes of crap every hour.  How is this not the best of all possible options?  Oh right: it is.

Yep.  Art did everything short of putting a gun to his head to get him to talk about the actual case, rather than the gripes Peter has about the other players...but Peter's obsessed about his perceived wrongs/slights.  It's a shame, he probably knows a great deal of interesting information about this one, but he had *no interest* in sharing it with us.

Eh, live and learn.  It opens the door for some guests who know how to stay on topic and share the fascinating details of this case with us.

A board like this one is chalk-full of sub-contexts, always. I am a subscriber, and am more than happy to support Art. That doesn't mean I'd go so far as to wax sillyness, as you did a post back, regarding "Art’s unrivaled interviewing skills" and "fascinating guests". He himself would probably challenge both of those assertions. While we're at it, by "abrasive advertisers" were you meaning to remind us of the "Screaming Lady" fund-my-movie campaign, or the oh-so-soothing "Arctic Chagah" ad?  Are we getting closer to straight yet?

I don't know what to think of that interview.  On the one hand the guy was kind of boring anyway.  On the other hand, instead of forcing the guy to talk about something else it felt like we had an hour-long meta discussion with callers about why the interview was a failure.

It's my natural instinct to take up for him.  He seemed nice enough but didn't really have all that much that was interesting to actually say about the case and chose a poor time to talk about being slighted by people.

Even though Celente is no Nostradamus, he would have been a more interesting and productive 3-hour guest than this cat.

Tonight's guest: Marcus Hutter: Artificial Intelligence.

http://artbell.com/wed-aug-26-marcus-hutter/

QuoteMarcus Hutter is a Professor in the RSCS at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.  He received his PhD and BSc in physics from the LMU in Munich and a Habilitation, MSc, and BSc in informatics from the TU Munich. Since 2000, his research at IDSIA and now ANU is centered on the information-theoretic foundations of inductive reasoning and reinforcement learning, which has resulted in over 100 publications and several awards.  His book “Universal Artificial Intelligence”, published in 2005, develops the first sound and complete theory of Artificial Intelligence.  He also runs the Human Knowledge Compression Contest offering winners a prize of 50,000 Euros.

I like a good discussion on artificial intelligence so this should be interesting.

I have a 13 hour flight coming up so I am saving up some shows. This one will be listened to from 30,000 plus feet.

They have Mayonnaise packets for the little "in-flight" snack sandwiches?  Yes?

Stewardii, beware!

Why am I having weird movie flash backs of "World War Z?"

I am currently moving heaven and earth to get Falkie and Sweet Kathy on your flight. SK is going to hold the video camera while you two get your groove on. This will be pay-per-puke view, of course.

Edit: Qantas have received a bulk order for mayo sachets.

It's kinda tragic actually - I've been listening to a previous Jimmy Church interview with Peter Robbins tonight - he knows this case like the back of his hand, and he's capable of laying it out clearly with lots of intriguing details.  He's actually very passionate about it, and a good guest when he focuses on the incident itself and the physical evidence.

I think he's just so emotionally involved with it that he's lost his objectivity, and once he got stuck in that blame game / resentment track, he couldn't pull out of it.  Instead of taking the hint and moving on, he seemed to grow increasingly defensive about it and just wanted to explain and justify his feelings.  Hopefully he'll learn from this and next time something like this happens he'll just switch gears and say "okay, let's focus on the evidence, Penniston's notebook, Halt's audio recordings, the report that came out of the FOIA request, the plaster castings, etc."
