I've wondered why Rummy left out unknown knowns - the things we know that we don't know we know
Someone needs to give this fool a TNT suppository with a really long fuse so the fucker has to run around for a good long while knowing he's about to be blown to bits. It wouldn't make up for the Iraqui civilians that were killed in an illegal war but it would be a start.

He got really hammered at the time for saying that stuff, but I think it is perfectly sensible if you think about it. It just about manages to stay the right sight of gobbledygook for me. It's not possible to have an unknown known, as one just cancels out the other.

You know a thing, but you cannot confirm the accuracy of the procedure through which you know it. I know that statements of the form "If p then q. P. Therefore q." are true. But I cannot confirm the rule of logic that makes them true (modus ponens). (I can provide a proof starting from theorems, but establishing what that has to do with what we mean by "true" is another story altogether.)

Sorry, not gonna get in an argument but I will say that you and i dont agree. I think you are dead wrong as is my right, but this isnt the place for it. Just letting you know that not all of us agree.

Yeah, who cares about the tens of thousands of civilians that died in a senseless war. /eyeroll

fair enough   :)

Let's just agree that Art Bell needs to be back on the air, George does not, and let personal politics lie silent in the shadows

I know what he meant too but you have to admit it was funny the way he said it.  They should have anticipated the way it would be taken, and made sport of

In the context he was speaking about, wouldn't unknown knowns (things we know that we don't know we know) be a bit of info we know but don't realize the importance of?

I think I'm going to start ending more sentences with the word 'of'.

You should! Also consider starting posts with, "And another thing..."

I don't know if this has been previously suggested, but here goes. Lawrence M. Krauss would be an excellent guest for Art.  The conversation with the Arizona State University theoretical physicist and cosmologist, might range from religion (or the lack of), to the mechanics of the stars, and at the quantum level how something could come out of "nothing." He's got a quick wit and isn't afraid to use it. Great guy/scientist, in my opinion.

I believe Neil deGrasse Tyson was already mentioned as a potential guest. I strongly concur. He's another very cool scientist. Both as guests would be a real treat for science lovers.

+1  This could be a really good show.

Yeah, I prefer Neil deGrasse Tyson over Michio Kaku myself for some reason. I do like them both though.

serenity

And another thing...............of ?

How was that?

gabrielle

Lawrence Krauss would be awesome.  I became fascinated with theoretical physics because of Art.  He has taught me much.

serenity

Maybe Art would like Tim Weisberg of Spooky South Coast. Besides his show he writes for a couple of SyFy Ghost shows.
just another idea for the show. Or am I late as usual and someone already suggested Tim?

May we never go to Hell but may we be recording and Tweeting the whole way

Concur.  Neil deGrasse Tyson is a little more grounded, even though Kaku may have a more impressive body of work.

and another thing, I don't like guests that know they are full of it. Everyone loves the Mel's Hole guy. If I wasn't such a pacifist I would punch him in the nose. In fact I want to be like the guy from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged who has made it a mission to insult every being in the universe, except I just want to punch in the nose everyone who is full of it and wants people to believe their crap. I like listening to people that have alternative ideas and believe them. I liked "mad man" Marcum, I liked Father Malachi, GIS, and tons of others, they believe what they are saying, even the guy that wanted to fly into a hole in the north pole to live with the creatures living inside the earth.

There is a documentary out there on Rumsfeld called "The Unknown Known," where he talks about this stuff and his career.

I disagree with many of the man's actions, but he is very smart. It's not a bad way to categorize information, either. Beyond facts are speculative statements. As you go further out, the definitive reliability of information decreases. You run out of facts and statements to base off facts, so you start basing speculation on speculation.

I'll avoid any political commentary here, as my point is wholly about the nature of what we "know." In a way, our perception. Perhaps this would be an interesting short interview for Mr. Rumsfeld and Art, if it could steer clear of more political viewpoints.

Each man has his strengths. I say have them both on! Apart, perhaps- because some of the subject matter might overlap.

Not that he would but even WITH the political stuff (and the business stuff) it would be an interesting interview if Art could grab him. The callers would be good also (Aspartme, the war, 911, the missing trillions from the DoD, etc.)

As mentioned on previous threads his comments regarding various "knowns/unknowns" is credible idea (Johari Window applied to war/politics etc)

Art has said he watches The Walking Dead.  I think Robert Kirkman would make an interesting guest.  I love a good dystopian story.

Seems I'm the only one who says "nay" to having mainstream scientists on Art's show. I can hear about that crap anywhere. It might be cool to find somebody who is a lesser-known scientist, but who is working (roughly) within the bounds of the current paradigm while suggesting something relatively radical.

Anyone looked much at CCrane products? I seem to like the looks of
the CC WiFi 2 Black Internet Radio w/ TuneIn, Bluetooth and FM. Price seems relatively okay. Has Tune In pre loaded.
Wonder what Art would say.

I would go for a mix myself, leaning heavily towards the unconventional...... so you are not alone.

I agree, you can hear mainstream science everywhere. Not a big fan of the media darling science types. They are all politicians anyway.

I think it depends on the type of science.  This one could be interesting.  Or others in the field of Neuroscience, a field of changing paradigms still wide open for discovery.

Also climate scientists.  It's too bad most intelligent discussions on this subject are marred by politics.

I agree as well.  Mainstream Scientists repeating standard accepted ideas can be found anywhere.  Some one investigating new ideas, or alternative investigations that are NOT widely accepted--THAT would be great on the show.

I agree nueroscientists would be awesome. I really liked these lectures. Now, some of the material is "old hat" but still interesting if you have never heard him. A lot of interesting/amazing things have happened in the years since of course. I wouldn't mind also philosophers on there (especially with regard to our advances in neuroscience, AI, quantum theory etc and implications with regard to basic ideas (free will, causality, ramifications on legal system (civil torts and criminal), morality, etc.)

Agreed, there are areas of exploration that are legitimately mysterious like anomalous heat generation phenomena that are being studied. There must be at least one scientist in that field who would make an interesting interview.

Art has spoken - its covered in the ArtBell.com FAQ already: :D

Q. Can I use an Internet radio?
A: If you would like a dedicated device to play Internet radio, there are a couple choices out there. Look for the CC-WiFi or CC-Wifi 2 from C.Crane. Use promo code “Dark Matter” or “Art Bell” to get a special gift and give us a credit.
