Thanks for hanging around Art,  I'm glad to see that you understand what the future holds for radio/live talkshows.. it is the future.. . I mean all the new cars are coming with built-in WiFi.. . And I'm sure the truckers will tune in..  Its gonna be great.. This shoe is going to rock the scene.. That's for damn sure

Art_s Farts

I'm 44 and already feeling nostalgic about AM radio. As a teen, I would lay in bed blasting Slayer, Anthrax, etc. through my headphones. To chill out after my sonic assault, I would switch to my radio and listen to the local minor league baseball team broadcasts and at midnight I would isten to Larry King's old Mutual radio program. I also religously listened to Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story"

Well I do agree with Howard to a degree, I do not think they are for losers, they are for people who can not listen live. I do agree that a Podcast alone will not bring many.

LIVE shows on the Internet though rare now are the way to go and the future of what was Radio, Mark my words.

Art

Thanks Art! It's interesting, even after you posted the same months ago,  few here grasped that terrestrial radio wasn't part of your plan for the new show.

It takes a unique and special  "talent" like you (Rush and Howard) have to pave the way, to make a new media popular or even save an old one.
ie. Rush saved day time AM, Howard popularized SXM, and these individual with talent, made personal fortunes for doing so.

Because Rush and Howard have large audiences (loyal fan base) they 'could'  like you, do their LIVE shows on the Internet and be successful.

As for AM going away, it's like when TV was first popular in the 1950's, the sages/insiders/industry experts/consultants predicted the death of movies. And for a time movie attendance was way down. But movies made a strong comeback, they still had  big screen/sound and special night out appeal.
AM will find a new niche, it's will always have its ease of use and mass distance availability as a valuable commodity.

Most new cars do but what I'm talking about is the day when you enter your car and your smartphone is synced with the dash board and you have access to all your apps fully integrating your phone and in turn the internet with your car.

Until that day arrives, I will continue to drive around with my TRS-80 computer cooking in the trunk - powered by a nifty cigarette lighter socket connected DC to AC power inverter.

I bought a car in 2013 that didn't have a cigarette lighter.

I guess this post could be considered a first world problem too.

I never even listened to Art Bell on the RADIO way back in the '90s, I was a teenager listening to his website's live stream on my laptop computer.  Those were the days...

Art Bell

Haha, right showing off a bit, sorry

Most likely.  But you're a good fella, so I trust you to self report on this one.

Is it to late to get in on your IPO?

I remember back in the mid 1980s, I made a loan (start-up/guidance line of credit), for future cell towers land location purchases.
The new loan customer had mapped out high points and was going to buy up the land, for future cell tower locations.
I didn't have clue, if what he was presenting would be viable.
It wasn't much of a risk because he qualified for the loan with other sources of repayment and collateral.
Oh yeah, he made a killing.

Art, when you return via the Internet you'll no longer be able to say, "Turn OFF your radio!!"

Perhaps   "Mute the volume on thy computer or hand-held device!!" ?? Lol

They are also getting ready to hit Radio stations with really big fee's for music, so that will add to the speed of their demise.

Art
It's funny that the music industry used to beg stations to play their music and get it out there.  WKRP would be a great example of many classic songs going over cable and hitting televisions and the industry never once objected because it was great advertising.  Now they wanted to do a box set and had to cut most of the music and / or replace it as the music industry wants their pound of flesh (never mind how much they made from the initial exposure.)

Disgusting (also one of the reasons that I seed a WKRP torrent with lots of the original music still in it.  Bunch of money-grubbing sleaze bags.

As long as you have wi-fi you don't even have to pay for the phone part of it. Hell, I shut my cell phone off a while back... and just carried it around for that reason.

Speaking of begging for air play,...
One of my first jobs as a kid was for KGIL 1260 AM, stuffing 3,700+ envelopes with
promo posters and 45s (singles) destined for every single radio station in the USA.
It was in the hopes the PM would give them some air play.  We did that a few times a week.
Ah yes..  The smell of new vinyl.
(and the paper cuts....)

Haha! I used to hear KGIL on my land line telephone.  I lived a couple of miles away from the station. This was in the 1960's. :)

HAHA!!  Too funny!  I had the same problem.  Once I started with GTE they made me "The KGIL Filter Man".
I was pretty close to Devonshire and Woodman.   8)

During the same era, we used to pick up harmonics from KUDE Radio Top 40 on our guitar amps while we were practicing in my friend's garage. Strong signal. Couldn't get rid of it. He lived about a block from the transmitter tower.

Had an uncle who claimed to be able to pick up a radio signal in his fillings from time to time. He was never able to demonstrate it, but I've heard it's possible.

Ha ha. Probably Tandy, which was our version of Radio Shack, which was eventually bought out by Dick Smith.

Art,  what's your reasoning for not doing both internet and terrestrial?   Even though I think  you're right about the future being internet based listening, I still think there is a market for you now on the AM dial.   Why wouldn't you take advantage of that and help out the mom & pop stations like KNYE and give your programming to them for free?  If anything, it's just another way to stick it to Dave, plus it's a good way to shore up your base during the transition from kHz to UHF...

On a side note...

UHF - Town Talk - HD

Yep... I have old inactive smart phones and wireless Wi-Fi air card routers, spread around different houses and RV.
Travel with my active cell phone and USB air card. When going to a different houses or using RV, plug USB air card into wireless router and use non active smart phone to listen to old streams of Art. Had this in system in place for 13 years.

Verizon is getting smart to this set up and it only works with old 3G air cards without extra fees. I have unlimited data 3G plan.
It's a nice set-up for traveling, but I'll probably get rid of it soon and replace it with a 4G large data plan iPad crap.  I Hate Apple :(
