Wanted to share something that made me laugh. Just goes to show that Art could/can handle any unscreened call without being a dip shit like "that other guy."

Art Bell Caller Makes an Amazing Prediction

oh shit is that high pitch eric from the stern show?

Looking at Art's site today I was struck by its simplicity, and how it was being built by people from BellGab and elsewhere, piece by respectful piece.  It is a wonderful thing to behold.  The responsiveness, the loving creativity, the community.

Art's website makes me all warm and fuzzy. I love to see all the contributions from fans and how they're being highlighted on the front page, not shoved some place where we can't find them. It shows that it's just as much our website as it is Art's website. I am tempted to contribute to the cat page.

Well off for vacation, see you in a week and a half... I expect this thread to be over a thousand posts by then ;)

Does anyone have info on the 'Mr Green' that Art made a point of banning on his Facebook page??

I missed all that, but saw what Art posted on his FB page after he booted Mr. Green:

Art Bell.
Yesterday near Pahrump, NV via mobile.
"People who request to be a friend of mine and then use that to attack me will find themselves in space other than this space. There are plenty of dirty little places on the Internet for that sort of thing. Goodbye Mr. Green."

I attended a writer's convention back in '04 or so, got to spend quite a bit of time with GRRM; fantastic guy. He also doesn't suffer fools, very much like Art. GRRM would probably give Dave a good whack on the head, but I could imagine a great interview via Art.

re: Breaking Bad -- I didn't know Art was a fan, very cool! Also was reluctantly sucked into True Blood by my fiancé and it isn't actually half bad; producer/writer Alan Ball might be a good interview. Beyond the obvious (and cartoonish) paranormal elements, Ball sneaks some not-so-obvious metaphysical bits in that are fun to catch.

I've always meant to catch Dead Like Me since Art raved about it.

I am an avid listener of the Jay Thomas show on Sirius. He's on Monday through Thurs in the afternoon then a very early show at 7am on Fridays on Howard 101.  It's a really great show that is only about entertainment and passing time  and cracking jokes than about real things. I find him funny and an amazing story teller.
I think I've heard that show go for about 50 minutes an hour. I'm behind a month in a half and looking forward to listening to his take on Art Bell coming to Sirius.

Here's the July 31st show if anyone is interested.

I think Art would dig Lovecraft's stories if he gave them a chance, and I think he would be fascinated by H.P.'s life.  As you undoubtedly know, HPL has an avid following of readers, many whom are also gamers (as Lovecraftian themes are in many computer games these days).  I'm in a Lovecraft group on FB, and there's close to 8,000 members and the people who are members are the kind of people that Art would like:  intelligent, quirky and interested in the paranormal.  S.T. could, of course, also discourse on the topic of underground/alternative weird fiction world, of which there is quite a movement of that in this country (in a small  but continually growing way):  they write, publish books and magazines, they put on and attend conferences, ... heck, some of them even make documentaries (Jason V Brock).  I think it's a movement that Art would be intrigued by if he knew about it, and it would make Dark Matter more cutting edge if it was a topic of one of his shows.  It would add breadth to the show, and not be the same old topics that he's always discussed (but yet, philosophically, fit within the realm of Art's usual old topics).

It would be wonderful to see some of the interviews you mention (Lovecraft, Martin), and perhaps someone who was more of a pop culture name in the 90's, such as Clive Barker.  (His short story collection, "Books of Blood", showed a very different side to his work.)  Though I'm not sure how much a modern audience would be interested in author interviews on the radio.  TV writers might be a better draw.

John Batchelor does them almost nightly, and he's nationally syndicated.

Art did an interview with show's producer and the actress that played George. Art absolutely gushed. It was almost as bad as when he had Jane Seymour on.

Random, but anyone know what the symbolism/meaning of Art's chain/necklace he has in so many photos? I've seen it in pics, he also wore it in a 1999 CNN interview I just saw the other day on YouTube. Pic below (just ignore that guy on the left in the pic).

Just a guy but it looks like one of those medallions with the faux hieroglyphics.  I just remember those from the past, not personally I hasten to add.

Indeed he does.  I'm not too familiar with him, but a peek on Google makes me think author interviews are more in his wheelhouse, and expected by his audience.  I should have probably been more specific, and said "Art's likely audience".

Any suggestions for an H.P. Lovecraft story for a complete newbie?  I've heard the name for years, of course, but never read any Lovecraft.  Isn't he sort of an acquired taste?

"The Dunwich Horror", "Picture in the House", and the classic "The Call of Cthulhu" are all good.  And yeah, you'll pretty much know early on reading HPL whether you'll like him or hate him.

And btw, kudos to bateman on some laugh out loud prank calls.  Your funniest line for me was right before you lost it the other night - "... the announcement, the wonderful announcement.. that Art Bell...".   The personality that you were mimicking would say something just like that.  Great line.

(Edit:  Might have been more approp. for the GNS thread.  Only note it here because of the Art Bell mention.)

I wonder if AB will try any strong deviation from his C2C format or will it basically be a recreation?  I think either way it will be very good...but I for one cannot wait to take a listen to the master of the genre.

I do wonder if he will stick with it but this is a major commitment so I am guessing there won't be a three month in and then quit scenario.  To those critiquing his choice of SiriusXM, I think this is a better venue considering the state of terrestrial radio.

Hello PrairieGhost!
I found this thread by looking through my daily logs and wanted to address your question here.
The above is indeed a fan "made" website; I've made sure that Art was completely aware since the date of registration.

Though it looks as though DarkMatterXM (opening 8-16) will now serve as both the website and fan/listener community.
The other site you found will have "something" in place.

We are an open and friendly website/community.
Which means that if a website or community is friendly toward us, they can have a team member come over and advertise the friendly community in the appropriate section named "Friends of Dark Matter". With an expectation that the same can be returned.

Below is a teaser image of the main website.

Shucks, I don't even remember being the one to first post that. Good catch, thank you! 6/8/13 indeed. But did you mean to end your post so abruptly with the word "achieved"?

Oh and MV--I really think you should consider grabbing darkchatter.com or some variant of such. Whoever thought of that--brilliant!

I'm a wee bit curious, :o who owns the rights to the Dreamland shows that Art use to do? I know PremRat own the rights to the "Somewhere in Time" for now, but does Art own the broadcast rights for the Dreamland shows? I was just thinking that  a good way to warm up the listeners on Indie Talk 104 would be to run the old Dreamland shows over the next month. I for one know at least a few people out there would love to hear them again! ;D

I believe he turned the whole thing over to Strieber, probably the old shows too but I'm not sure.
