George Noory Sucks! - The Definitive Compendium

Started by MV/Liberace!, April 06, 2008, 12:23:02 AM

Can Noory pronounce anything correctly?

No
No
I don't hate Noory and I don't eat rats, but I was about to post that he does a five day a week show and can't possibly read every book as Knapp does until it occured to me that Knapp  holds down a full time job AND prepares for his weekend gigs on C2C just as Ian Punnett did. It's Noory's freakin' job to be prepared for his nightly shows, and by prepared, I don't mean 8 hours of Candy Crush prep or cruising the internet. There's no excuse for the same list of dopey questions night after night. This is what I would tell him - that interested give and take that sets the good hosts apart is missing.

coaster

Fair enough, but at least the guy didn't make up a fake stalker story to get out of a job just so he could pawn his gig off to some woman he has a crush on.

I agree coaster. The latest Art Bell fiasco made me look at Noory in a different light. I still cringe at the numptie questions and so on, but he does fulfill  his contract, and seems to have the kind of work ethic that would make it impossible for him to throw the towel in after building expectations.

Didn't that happen a few years ago when John B. Wells was guest hosting and hosting c2cam Sat nights and his ratings were higher?
Noory had him fired before the network could move Wells to main weeknight host instead of Noory?

I seriously doubt any weekend host would have higher ratings.  This was likely just B.S from the John B Wells groupies.  The only thing worse than John B. Wells were his groupies.

Is this how low our expectations have become:  At least he shows up for work on time!

I exchanged a few pms with Noory lately, in one he said ''we've glanced at the cartoons lol''.

I haven't changed any opinions about his talent or the show or the guests or topics.  I'm not sure what to make of him personally.  I've always thought it possible he isn't really a bad guy, that he just comes across very poorly at times - but that's just really hard to believe sometimes.

I do give George credit for being a steady presence all these years.  I'm way too erratic to ever log such a consistent record.  There's something to be said for dependability.  Ok, I'll just stop here before I undo my rare Noory compliment.

He's like a Cal Ripken with a .100 hitting percentage.

Breaking news, they don't read the whole book unless it's a never put the book down interesting. They just discuss the chapters the Author wants to discuss and coaster to coaster wranglers know which chapter to read for discussion.

So there you have it.

So, they admit that Noory doesn't read any of the chapters himself?

Art famously never read the books (or usually didn't at least) before interviews. His idea was that he wanted the guest to explain the subject to him, and the audience, by asking good questions related to the subject. I don't have a problem with Norry not reading the books, but I do have a problem when he claims he has read them and still asks inane questions. I also have a problem with Norry coming up lame gameshow-esque skits, or singing contests, to give away the unread books and offering the books to callers who have mentioned that they are blind.

Even a cursory skimming of the book, or it's info/wiki page, or even friggin amazon reviews could give rise to plenty of worthwhile questions.  Art seemed to have enough general knowledge of various subjects along with raw analytical thinking power that he could somehow ask relatively informed questions without much book prep, but alas GN does not have this gift.

The dude needs to do some basic homework, but he won't.  I remember a guest who'd written some book on the history of the cosmos, and within five mins. he was out of ideas and started asking him to predict the future, a la "Where is this all headed?" and "Will we ever get the answers?"  I was like, so some 13 billion years was just glossed over in a few mins. because George was too lazy to read the friggin table of contents.

Larry King also never read the books beforehand.

When he tilted his head to side the cone-shaped hat with the yarn pom-pom on top fell to the floor.

He did not do what his mother always told him.  "Georgie, don't go outside with your cone hat on unless you have the elastic band attached and under your chin."  Georgie, do what mother says, and you will be better off.

You mean he didn't fall back on the usual: "The Big Bang, what the heck was it? I still don't understand...." or "how do you do what you do, how uh, did you get into this, you, uh have such a passion?"

Even more interesting is that Noory doesn't write any of the chapters in his own books - he has ghost-writers...

WHen you don't have a great command of the language you are smart to get a ghost writer.  There are sometimes well known people who have an ego and write their own books, and it shows.

I think either a person has intellectual curiosity or he doesn't.  If he does, then all during his life he is picking up bits of information, here and there, and learning about things.  If you have spent your life engaged you should be able to ask good questions.  If you are young or have spent a life with blinders on you are at a horrible loss and probably SHOULD be reading as much as possible of an author's book.

The only guests who do well with Noory seem to be those who refuse to be lead off track by Dave's puerile questions.  They must be the ones in control of the interview, and not he.

My understanding is that he genuinely co-wrote Worker in the Light with William Birnes.  Of course, I've never read the book but I understand that it's quite convoluted. So it would make sense that he helped write it.
